It seems that almost all stamp companies now have coordinating dies available for the stamp sets they sell. I have some of these coordinating die sets and I really wanted to find a way to get more out of them to make the investment worth it. And today’s technique is a great example!

After stamping the Avery Elle Monsters Stamps on a white die cut banner and coloring them with Copic Markers, I applied masks cut with the coordinating dies. (Boy, does using the dies save time!) I gently applied Distress Ink over the mask with an Ink Blending Tool. The results? A bright, white, thin outline around the monsters… along with a soft a halo of color.

I embossed my cards with the We R Memory Keepers Dotted Next Level Embossing Folder. I tell ya – these embossing folders are incredible. Such dimension!

This card design could work with so many stamps you may have. I think I will be making more! Oh – and for another video showing how to use coordinating dies for masking, head HERE.

I’ve never been one to purchase the coordinating dies since they add so much expense to my already expensive stamping habit, but this is a great idea! It will definitely make me look at the coordinating dies differently and may cause me to purchase some of them in the future. Thanks so much for your creative tips like this that are always so helpful!!!!

  2. Barbara Schmidt says:

I like being able to buy matching dies for stamp sets however, sometimes they are expensive considering the use I may get out of the stamps. If I see I can successfully fussy cut the stamp images, I probably don’t buy the dies too. I do love your idea of using the dies to make masks and I may have to reconsider whether to buy the dies!

  3. Pai Meng says:

love these. So yes, i usually do get the coordinating dies and then wonder whether i really need them or not! I am just a completist collector i think.

  4. Annie Kong says:

Sometime, if the stamp image is not easy to fussy cut, I will buy the dies.

  5. Marga says:

I have very few stamps, and I don’t have the coordinating diecuts, but I would like to have them. Sometimes they are very expensive.
    I love the cards.

  6. Michele says:

It depends on the stamp set if I get the die cuts. 🙂

  7. Melissa Flieg says:

Love the cute little monster cards. I’m sure they will brighten the day of the sick kids you are sending them to.

  8. Kathy Salido says:

These are so cute, and I love the ideas for using the dies!! I almost always buy the coordinating dies with my stamps!

  9. Amy C says:

I haven’t started investing in dies just yet, still working on the stamps! 🙂 These cards are SO cute, love the googly eyes! I’m sure the kids will absolutely love them!

  10. susie sonnier says:

So adorable. Love the stamp set and the embossing folders. I haven’t purchased any coordinating stamp and dies sets yet.

  11. Shelly says:

I love…love…love coordinating dies! However, being on a crafting budget is hard and sometimes I’d rather just buy more stamp sets and fussy cut the dies. But..when I see wonderful techniques like yours it makes me want coordinating dies for all my stamp sets. Thanks for the inspiration and opportunity to win!

  12. Candyce says:

Cute, cute, card! I’m all in when it comes to coordinating stamps and dies.

  13. Laurie says:

What cute monsters and clever use of dies. Thanks for helping us all get more out of our in tools and supplies.

  14. Julie says:

I DITTO all of the previous comments…so cute!! I like to buy the dies that are more intricate, others I like to fussy cut, so a horse a piece!

  15. Sonya says:

This is a great idea. I remember seeing you do it in an earlier video. Unfortunately, I have very few dies (it’s just not in my budget) but I LOVE getting the coordinating dies when I am able and know I’ll use the stamp set often.

  16. Judy Tutuska says:

I do love the coordinating dies, but am really happy that you’ve shown us how to get more uses out of them. Thanks!

  17. Gracia Kennedy says:

I do like to get coordinating dies with stamps, there are so many thing you can do with them. I have a friend who makes card too and we share our dies a lot. Thank you so much for your videos they show me how to get the most out of my stamps and spur me to creativity.

  18. Mary Schmidt says:

Rubber stamps with matching dies are a must. (Would love a SNC2 to save me from having to cut every piece with a die.) Dies are much easier then fussy cutting.

  19. Cyndi Morris says:

I love stamps with coordinating dies, but I only have a couple of small sets. Most of them are out of my price range. I do love the Next Generation embossing folders and will be adding them to my “wish list.”

  20. Julia Trzeciak says:

I personaly do not like cootdinating dies because i like to fussy cut. I don’t like the white border dies give.

  21. shartl says:

Yes, I love dies that go with the stamps. I have two little girls and very little time to craft so anything that makes it easier is a plus!! These cards are so fun and perfect for a child!

  22. Nanna RL says:

Not yet, I am wishing a sizzix big shot for christmas! So maybe after christmas!

  23. Becky Green says:

SUPER IDEA to use your dies for masks, Jennifer!!! I DOOOOO LOVE to get dies with my stamps! EVEN IF, I win stamps I look to see if there are coordinating dies & put them on my “To Get Right Away” list! 😉 SUPER CUTE CARDS TOO, Jennifer!!!! 😉

  24. Maryann W. says:

I try to be very selective (and monetarily wise) in the purchase of coordinating dies. Although it takes a bit more time, if I know the stamp image is easily fussy-cut, I don’t invest in the coordinating die.

  25. Theresa says:

Really depends on the set. If it’s a set that is easy to fussy cut then I usually don’t bother, unless it is a set I’ll use often, like the TH Crazy Birds. If it is harder to fussy cut or one I’ll use a ton, then I’ll buy the dies.

Thanks for the chance to win.

  26. Helen says:

I absolutely love coordinating dies with stamp sets. When I saw this video I was about to get on line and purchase the products you used. But then when you said there was a chance to win the sets, I thought I would give it a go first. None of our craft stores stock coordinating sets and we have to purchase online which makes it a bit expensive when you add shipping. Such a pity, because I’m new to card making and am in love with coordinating sets.
Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  27. julie m says:

if it is a set that i think i will use a lot i get the coordinated dies. if not, i just buy the stamps and fussy cut if i need to.

  28. Kari T says:

I think the coordinating dies are awesome and helpful. I do not have very many, but they are great!!!

  29. Such a cool idea! Yes! I love getting matching stamp and die sets – so usefull.
    Thanks for the giveaways.

  30. Jennifer what I love about your cards so much is the simplicity yet the totally cool finished look! Thank you again!

  31. Maude Beakley says:

I do like coordinating dies with stamps — especially detailed stamps. I don’t mind fussy cutting around a fairly simple design. I loved your masking idea to “halo” your monster images — very cute!

  32. Renee R says:

As always – great ideas! I love stamp sets with matching dies. Thanks for a chance to win : )

  33. vacouponlady says:

I love stamp sets that come with matching dies! It just makes things so much easier. Thanks!!!

  34. Thirza77 says:

I would really love to try this technique…it looked great (again!)!!! Normally I won’t buy the matching dies…most of the time they’re to expensive for me…But if they can be used for more techniques it could be worth while…Thanks again!

  35. Brenda lubrant says:

I always usually always just buy the dies, but if it has a really cute matching stamp set, I will buy it.

  36. Valerie says:

Such cute cards! I have purchased dies for most of my stamp sets that have them as well as lots of basic shape dies. I do have a Scan n Cut now (still in the box!) so may not continue to purchase coordinating dies. Not sure if it will replace things like stitched squares though.

  37. Ginny K says:

I think it would be wonderful to have dies that match stamps, unfortunately I have never had the extra cash to purchase any being on a fixed income. I love the ease of creativity they provide. Thanks for a chance to win some. ~Gin K.~

  38. Donna Dacy says:

Such cute cards and for such a wonderful idea. Kids will certainly love these. When I can, I buy the dies to match my stamps. It helps so much to speed things along. I love this technique. It will come in handy when I forget to do my background or decide I want to add one. Nice tutorial!! TFS

  39. Karen P says:

Awesome video Jennifer – thank you so much for sharing. I love your foam tip for large panels and I have been doing that for the last couple of weeks – it made perfect sense to me when I saw your video and now I do it most of the time. The dies that match the stamps aren’t so easily available in the UK and I’ve been hesitant to purchase them because I like my pounds and pennies to stretch well when craft shopping. I’ve never thought to use the dies to create masks: I think I’m going to have change my policy lol! As always thank you so much for sharing all your the marvellous techniques and tips with us I really appreciate it Karen xx

  40. Bev Chapman says:

I love getting the coordinating dies but they can be so expensive. I have to weigh out whether I will use them enough or if the image is too intricate to hand cut.

  41. Liza says:

I love the idea of having the coordination dies with stamps because the finished projects simply look more finished versus cutting by hand especially on those images that have intricate outlines. Love your video, and now I am even drawn to those cute little monsters. We all have a kid inside lol!

  42. Loved this technique. I would love to have dies for all my stamps but I have to choose carefully. If I can easily fussy cut them out I won’t purchase matching die. It just gets too costly. If the image is more intricate I prefer to have the coordinating die.

  43. Janet Cobb says:

I do like the coordinating dies…but if it comes to stretching my budget to include them, I usually pass. I love the Dotted Next Level embossing folder! Loos like big bubbles on your cards! 🙂

  44. Michelle A says:

When a stamp set has a coordinating die, I struggle! I tell myself I don’t need it b/c I can cut it out. BUT when I actually use the set, I wish I had it!

  45. Michele says:

I have several matching die and stamp sets. I find them very useful especially with intricate stamps. Your monsters are cute, not scary in the least.

  46. Laraine R says:

Love this idea of use the dies as a mask! I will be doing this! Love these monster stamps & dies, they are on my wish list. I almost always get the dies that coordinate with the stamp set!

  47. Eby P says:

I love to get coordinating dies with my stamps and especially when the stamp set is a difficult one to cut out by hand. Unfortunately, the stores in my area don’t always carry them or if they do the set only has one die but way more stamps.

  48. Pam H. says:

I like to use coordinating dies, but not for everything. 1) they are expensive; 2) they take up space; & 3) if I can fussy cut I will. That being said, I would love dies.

  49. Tiffany says:

Coordinating dies are AWESOME! They save so much time even if you prefer the cleaner look of fussy cutting you could always use the die to cut off the bulk and then fussy cut the leftover trim.

  50. cindy m says:

    don’t have a die cutter………………..wish I did! 🙁
