It seems that almost all stamp companies now have coordinating dies available for the stamp sets they sell. I have some of these coordinating die sets and I really wanted to find a way to get more out of them to make the investment worth it. And today’s technique is a great example!

After stamping the Avery Elle Monsters Stamps on a white die cut banner and coloring them with Copic Markers, I applied masks cut with the coordinating dies. (Boy, does using the dies save time!) I gently applied Distress Ink over the mask with an Ink Blending Tool. The results? A bright, white, thin outline around the monsters… along with a soft a halo of color.

I embossed my cards with the We R Memory Keepers Dotted Next Level Embossing Folder. I tell ya – these embossing folders are incredible. Such dimension!

This card design could work with so many stamps you may have. I think I will be making more! Oh – and for another video showing how to use coordinating dies for masking, head HERE.

These cards are a perfect fit for this week’s Share Handmade Kindness challenge focused on kids. I also plan to send one to Emily and one to Xander for the Card Shower. I hope you are able to participate in helping these kids smiling! (More info HERE.)

I do like selective coordinating dies but generally will just hand cut the basic images.

I do like having dies to match my stamps because fussy cutting is too hard on my eyes & hands anymore.

  5. Patty Pearson says:

What cute cards! I love these embossing folders and I don’t think they are that expensive considering the effect that you get. Kristina used them with Christmas cards the other day and watercolors. Thanks!!!

  6. Marilyn says:

To have the dies or not …that is the question? Well if the image is simple then I can cut it out. But if it adds to the image and is hard to cut then the die is a must.
In a perfect world I would have all..lol

  7. Janet D. says:

I like coordinating dies, and sometimes purchase them, but if I think I can do without I do. It really depends on how intricate the stamp is. They can be pricey. /:
    Thanks for this great giveaway!!

  8. Jennifer Delauter-Hovermale says:

I always like to get the coordinating die. However, that’s not always possible depending on my crafting budget. So, I buy the dies when I can. If I can’t buy them at that time, I’ll try to get it later. If not, there’s always fussy cutting! I hope that Santa gives me a Brother Scan 2 Cut for Christmas! Hint, hint honey!!!

  9. Betty Sue says:

Adorable cards!! I almost always buy dies to match my stamps!

  10. Vicki Dillon says:

I am so hooked on the matching dies that I hesitate to buy a stamp that doesn’t have one.

Great technique, Jennifer. Thanks for sharing! I always buy the matching dies with stamp sets and am glad more and more companies are offering them.

Great idea. How cute! Any child would love to get one of these cards.

  14. Robin in Washington says:

Cute cards Jennifer!! Sometimes I buy the matching dies if I think I’m going to use the set a lot OR if I think I can use the dies without the stamps OR if it would be impossible to fussy cut myself…like the crazy birds set.

  15. Linnea J says:

😀 CUTEST cards!! I may buy coordinating die if the image is really detailed.

  16. Paula M says:

I like to have both the stamps and matching dies when they are available. I’m not always sure how I will use them when I purchase them, but I know I’ll think of something eventually .

  17. Mary says:

Great job and thanks as usual for your inspiration! I love, love, love dies that match my stamps! I especially like dies & stamps sets when they are intricate so no fussy cutting has to be done………..too time consuming when fussy cutting intricate stamps! I did that one year with a reindeer from a Hero Arts stamp set I purchased :/ The reindeer turned out quite nice but boy oh boy what a tedious job!!

  18. Great idea Jennifer! I do usually get the matching dies when I get a stamp set! Never know when you might need them!

  19. Karen G says:

Love coordinating dies! It seems to save me time!

  20. Reanna says:

I try to get the coordinating dies for my stamps – my fussy cutting skills are nonexistent LOL! I plan to try this technique out over the weekend. Thanks for sharing!

I love the coordinating dies for the stamps. They do however, make this hobby quite expensive. I have splurged on 2 sets, so far and like them. Thanks for all the great ideas Jennifer.

  23. tasha says:

thanks for sharing! i LOVE using die sets for my stamps… it makes card making a breeze! but don’t get me wrong fussy cutting is therapeutic at times!!

  24. Linda Bostedt says:

Cute creations! I ONLY!!!! buy coordinating stamps and dies now

  25. Kit L says:

The idea is very tempting but I don’t usually get coordinating dies for my stamps even though I am not great at fussy cutting. Only for the ones that I really like.

  26. Rhonda O says:

I love these monster stamps. Great idea to use the dies as masks. I really liked the white border that it left. Since I am very new to stamping I haven’t had a chance to get any dies, but yes, I would love to be able to get dies with every stamp set. Btw, love the new website!

  27. Ruth Gauss says:

Very cool effect! Thanks so much for sharing! I love that embossing folder! Dots are always so much fun and the dimension on those is really awesome!

I do like to get the coordinating dies for my stamp sets. I even have a Silhouette and could use the Pixscan mat to create a digital die cut, it’s still so easy (and low-tech) to just pull out the stamp set and the dies and get to playing! Thanks so much for sharing another way to use those dies!

  28. Roz R. says:

I have a few stamp/die sets. I really like them.
These monsters are so cute. I really like the embossing folder.

  29. Anne Sturgeon says:

I do love the coordinating dies. Older hands don’t work as well as they use to on paper cutting! These monsters will make the young ones smile. Heck, the old ones too! Thank you for your kindness Jennifer.

  30. Diane Cramer says:

Such CUTE cards! I’m a “selective-matching-die-purchaser”. I don’t mind fussy cutting, but I confess to having dies for some sets that just take a bit too long to fussy cut, or that I will use a lot. After seeing this technique, I might just have to consider more dies! Thanks for everything you do…you’re my favorite teacher!

  31. Terry B. says:

I don’t get coordinating dies with my stamp sets, but wish I could afford them all!!
Thanks for your kind, and generous giveaway!

  32. Leah says:

I love to get dies with my stamps. I love to fussy cut, but the time dies save it totally worth it.

  33. I love it when a stamp set has a companion die set. Beats having to cut an image out.

  34. Janet Ingraham says:

I have rejected some stamps I would otherwise have bought if it had coordinating dies. I have two fingers that I have only partial feeling in as well as some arthritis. I’ve been so please with the sets.

  35. SQUEAL!! LOVING LOVING LOVING your Sweet Cards!! THANKS for sharing the Video!! I LOVE to have the Coordinating Dies when I spend the Money to get a Stamp Set if they are available only because I think there are SO MANY more techniques you can do with them when you have the Matching Dies!! THANKS For the chances to WIN and have a FABULOUS WEEK!! =)

  36. Linda B. says:

Yes I love the coordinating dies. My free-hand cutting is horrible!

  37. Katie says:

I do like to get coordinating dies but it;s not always in the budget.

  38. Parker.O says:

Definitely I would LOVE to get coordinating dies for most of my stamp sets. Doesn’t always happen, but I try.

  39. Teri Ann Crema-Jahnke says:

I’m, currently, wrestling with this very thing. I love layering the stamped images, so I do quite a lot of fussy cutting. I see how coordinating dies would save a lot of time. But, would they get enough use for me to justify the purchase? Decisions! Decisions!!

  40. yvonne says:

I someti mes buy coordinating die mostly when I images would be difficult to cut out.

  41. JulieC says:

I don’t buy very many coordinating dies since I have a Scan ‘N Cut and it cuts out any image I scan in with adjustable borders. Love it!

  42. sharon L says:

These lil monsters are so not me but they keep me laughing. A truly happy card. I would love to make cards with this stamp set and give them to children in the hospitals. Wouldn’t that put a smile on a face or two.

  43. These monster cards are adorable! Thanks for sharing them and the video with us.
I don’t buy very many coordinating stamps and dies, my budget is limited and I love to fussy cut, so it’s more sensible for me to buy more other supplies rather than the dies.

  44. Maureen Reiss says:

These are Soooo Stinkin’ Cute!! Love the googly eyes!! I get the dies if the shapes look too hard to cut myself

  45. Debbie Riley says:

Your cards are soooo cute. I always try to buy the stamps and the matching dies. Since I’m very good with scissors 🙂

  46. Maria says:

Since I don’t own a die cut machine, no die cuts for me.

  47. Anita says:

I didnt even know sfamps came with matching dies until recenfly! If I could afford it I would love to have matching dies to my stamps as im not good at always keeping even space. Some stamps would be too hard to cut by hand as well and woul be even more awesome to have a die for.

  48. Tammy Waschbisch says:

I always get the coordinating dies with the stamp set. Love dies!

  49. Debbie Vasel says:

Love, love, love your posts this month with the kind challenges.
Yes, I do like matching dies for stamp sets, especially for the tiny stuff.
