It seems that almost all stamp companies now have coordinating dies available for the stamp sets they sell. I have some of these coordinating die sets and I really wanted to find a way to get more out of them to make the investment worth it. And today’s technique is a great example!

After stamping the Avery Elle Monsters Stamps on a white die cut banner and coloring them with Copic Markers, I applied masks cut with the coordinating dies. (Boy, does using the dies save time!) I gently applied Distress Ink over the mask with an Ink Blending Tool. The results? A bright, white, thin outline around the monsters… along with a soft a halo of color.

I embossed my cards with the We R Memory Keepers Dotted Next Level Embossing Folder. I tell ya – these embossing folders are incredible. Such dimension!

This card design could work with so many stamps you may have. I think I will be making more! Oh – and for another video showing how to use coordinating dies for masking, head HERE.

I generally don’t buy matching dies as I prefer to make one layer cards but never say never! Love following your makes xxx

  2. Sus says:

I like to have the coordinating die for my stamps.
Will be adding your idea from today’s post to “stretch” the use of my supplies. I can’t wait to try out some cards using this masking technique!

  3. Sheri K says:

I do sometimes like to get coordinating dies, but I found the dies and the stamps combo are usually quite expensive. I can usually hand cut them, or if the stamp is complicated, I can stamp it, scan it into my computer and create an outline to cut it with my electronic die cut machine. Mostly I just cut them if I need to, as that can be quicker unless I’m doing several of the same image. Great video and cards as always!

  4. Marcia says:

Love getting dies to go with my stamps! Just have to decide on the extra cost. ☺

  5. Jennifer says:

It is fantastic to not have to fussy cut everything anymore. Makes crafting way more fun. So my answer is, if I can I do; if I can’t I still buy 😉

  6. Susan T says:

I love die that coordinate. Just wish I had an electric die cutter sometimes especially when I am mass producing cards!

  7. Lauren S. says:

Hi Jennifer, I think the kindness you are sharing is great and that your cards put a smile on the kids faces :). No coordinating die sets around here… But I’m sure they are great & make life easier… Like you say, some shapes are easy enough to fussy-cut, but if the die is a shape that can be used on its own as well, then I think it would be worth the investment…. Oh and how cute are those little monsters!! 🙂

  8. Laura Joyce says:

I’m just finishing up a set of cards for a good friend to use. I really enjoy making cards but there’s no way I could use them all myself. Giving them to friends and associates is a real kick.

  9. craftygirl15 says:

I have a few stamp and die sets–mostly flowers. I don’t buy lots of sets because I don’t mind fussy cutting images. Thanks

  10. Drue says:

I love getting the dies and the stamps. These cards are so sweet. I will have to try those embossing folders. Thanks for the top on masking. What a great technique!

  11. Jacqueline says:

I’m still fairly new to stamping, so I haven’t purchased any sets yet that have coordinating dies. I definitely have some on my wish list I would like!

  12. Danielle Wiegert says:

I always get the coordinating die set if there is one. I have arthritis starting in my hands and wrist tendon problems so fussy cutting is not very easy for me! I never thought to use the die for making the masks though!!!

  13. Marie says:

I haven’t gotten the coordinating dies often before, because I find them so difficult to line up properly. But I am considering buying a MISTI, and I think that would help a lot =)

  14. Mary Werry says:

I don’t usually get the dies. Never had much luck with it and now I have the Scan&Cut2 – so much easier for me. Late to the game so I never got really used to using the matching dies.

  15. Michele says:

I don’t always get the coordinating dies due to my budget. I don’t mind fussy cutting. Thanks for all the great idea and tips! I am looking forward to your next video

  16. jmcmillin says:

I didn’t used to buy the dies, but I find I do it more and more. So many ways to use them, even some you wouldn’t think of right off the bat, like what you showed here.

  17. nana griffin says:

No I usually do not buy the dies that go with the stamp sets. I really enjoy fussy cutting out my images because I like having no white edge around them usually. Once in awhile if I think I would not like cutting out by hand then I would but very seldom.

  18. Linda S. says:

I love coordinating dies because I am not very good at fussy cutting and really don’t like to do it. And the dies just leave a more clean edge.

  19. Sue Smith says:

What very frightful and delightful cards 😉 I love the way you showed the hairy monster. Googly eyes always make the cards pop. Love them.

  20. Rebecca C. says:

I try to get the coordinating dies with all my stamp sets but this doesn’t always happen. I am on a monthly budget for crafting supplies, so if there are more than one stamp sets that I want sometimes I just get the stamps and get the dies at a later time. I don’t like to fussy cut.

  21. Teodora says:

    Really cute monsters.
I never buy coordinating dies… I barely affort to spend money on stamps… I can fussy cut for free.

  22. Anja E. says:

Definitly yes! I do like coordinating dies. I am not good at fussy cutting, in some places I have a thin border and in others a thicker one. Then I am cutting again.. it makes me nervous. So I am always happy, when I have coordinating dies although they are expensive.

  23. Amy Williams says:

I love the idea of coordinating dies…but as I do not have a manual die cutting system I don’t purchase coordinating dies. I’ll just fussy cut anything I want to pop up off the page.

  24. renee_sue says:

I have never thought of using coordinating dies like this before. Great idea! I will have to look back through my dies now to see if i can use them like this.

  25. Laura G says:

since die cutting is a rather new addition to my crafting, I do have some corresponding dies, but for the most part I do not. I like it when the same die set can be used for more than 1 stamp set.

  26. Haejin says:

I love getting coordinating dies for the stamp sets I have. But I’m wondering if the brother scan and cut is really as easy as it looks.. might be a good investment in the long run? I really dislike fussy-cutting.. haha~

  27. Shari says:

Cutest cards ever. You can’t go wrong with monsters and googly eyes. ♥

  28. Barbara Lambing says:

I guess I base whether or not I want to invest in coordinating dies using two main criteria–how hard the stamps seem to be to cut around and how much I think I will be using the stamps. If I don’t think I will use the stamps a lot, investing in the dies may not be worth it to me. Also, this forces me to fussy cut more and I am actually seeing improvement in my skills, so that is a real positive. Thin k I was the world’s worst cutter when I started stamping, now I am mediocre–that is a big improvement! : )

  29. Sharon Wade says:

I don’t usually get coordinating dies with my stamp sets, but I may try them in the future..As I get better at my coloring techniques.
    Thanks Sharon

  30. These are absolutely adorable!!

  31. Greta H says:

Why didn’t I think of that?! Great way to stretch our dies & adorable kid cards, Jennifer! Thanks for a chance at some Avery Elle goodies!

  32. Dawn Young says:

I don’t have dies for all of my stamp sets…however, if I LOVE the stamp set and think that the die will be used enough for the money…YES!!!!!!!!!

  33. Amy Seigler says:

I love to get the coordinating dies to go with my stamps. I love the look of a professional cut vs my fussy cutting. Great cards!!

  34. Bonnie Stebbins says:

I don’t have any coordinating dies and stamps. I think a few might be nice to have. I like the cute cards. Any child would love getting them.

  35. Bunny says:

I don’t just like getting the coordinating dies, I LOVE getting the coordinating dies. Life is so much simpler without having to fussy cut.

  36. Traci Brennan says:

Those cards are stinkin’ cute! I love all three.
I often buy both stamps and dies together. But I weigh whether the dies are really going to be useful to me for more than just cutting. I don’t mind fussy cutting. So I guess the short answer is…I buy the dies for the sets that would be too much of a pain to fussy cut!

  37. Carol Ann Ater says:

Adorable little monsters to make smiles not frowns. Lovable and dear. I know they would fit cheerfully into my happy stash file.

  38. Pat McCleary says:

These are so cute, Jennifer. Would certainly make any child smile. I love having matching dies. They can get expensive, but if you are not a fussy cutter (I’m terrible), it can be so worth it. Thanks for a chance to win.

  39. sheila_g says:

If available, I always get the dies and now you have given me another way to use them. Adorable little monsters. Prayers for the 2 children you are sending the cards to.

  40. Theresa says:

Such cute cards. I made some similar for a Halloween Birthday party. Love the banner with stitching on edges.
    Thanks for sharing.

  41. Jeanie Gregory says:

The cards are so cute! Thank you

  42. donna says:

So cute. I will steal your idea to make some monster cards for the kids you blogged about.

  43. Kim Badelt says:

When you are a busy Mum any time you can save is worth investing in – so I am most definitely in favour of buying matching dies so I can maximise my crafting time!

  44. Iris says:

Love these cards. I actually don’t have any matching dies for my stamping images. I don’t really like the look of that white border around an image, so I m have to fussycut everything!!

  45. Ger says:

I sometimes buy the matching dies, so handy! Ger x

  46. MaggieB1983 says:

Hi Jennifer ~ These cards are absolutely sweet. Love the technique for using the die to create masking. Seems like a no-brainer but I hadn’t thought of it before!! Thanks so much for sharing.

  47. Karen D says:

I love getting the matching dies and you just gave me one more way to use them. I love those little monsters, they are so cute I can hardly contain myself!

  48. Laurie U says:

Yes, there are some stamps that I have coordinating dies that goes with. Thanks for the very creative idea and way to now use them!

  49. kajcyika says:

I loooove coordinating dies because it so much easier and faster than cutting it by hand 🙂

  50. Jennifer says:

The cards are adorable. I love to buy the dies with my stamps but as my budget does not allow to always do this so I have many sets without the coordinating die set.
