It seems that almost all stamp companies now have coordinating dies available for the stamp sets they sell. I have some of these coordinating die sets and I really wanted to find a way to get more out of them to make the investment worth it. And today’s technique is a great example!

After stamping the Avery Elle Monsters Stamps on a white die cut banner and coloring them with Copic Markers, I applied masks cut with the coordinating dies. (Boy, does using the dies save time!) I gently applied Distress Ink over the mask with an Ink Blending Tool. The results? A bright, white, thin outline around the monsters… along with a soft a halo of color.

I embossed my cards with the We R Memory Keepers Dotted Next Level Embossing Folder. I tell ya – these embossing folders are incredible. Such dimension!

This card design could work with so many stamps you may have. I think I will be making more! Oh – and for another video showing how to use coordinating dies for masking, head HERE.

Of course I’d love to get coordinating dies to go with my stamps but I can’t always afford them. Making cards can be an expensive hobby but I love it. I get dies when I can or when I can get a sale.

  5. Michelle O. says:

Absolutely!! I love having coordinating dies with my stamps… but often, I’ll buy the stamp first, and then go back and get the die later. It’s so nice to have the set together!

  6. Christine R says:

Yes, I always try to get coordinating dies because I don’t have the patience for fussy cutting things. Thanks for some more great inspiration!

  11. DanaDesmond says:

Love dies with my stamps, especially after seeing this technique.

  12. Christine M says:

Absolutely I love matching dies! I cannot always afford them but when I can I do buy them.

  13. Avra says:

I love the idea of coordinating dies, but have not purchased many at all yet. I’ve been a die cut machine owner for several years so it’s tough to spend so much on dies as well. I’m horrible at fussy cutting though, so I generally just stamp, cut out a frame, and mat!

  14. Diane says:

These are adorable, Jennifer, love those little monsters! I love coordinating dies but rarely buy them because I cannot afford to, wish I could though. They’re almost always more expensive than the stamp set itself. So if the choice is between buying 2 new stamp sets or 1 stamp set with the matching dies I always choose the 2 new stamp sets. I end up doing a lot of fussy cutting 🙂

  15. Jayell says:

These are fun, cheerful cards which kids will love. I love the effect from the embossing folder too

  16. Colleen says:

I always get the coordinating dies for my stamps if they are available, this gives me the option to use them when I need them or just use the stamps or now I can use them in a different way too!! Thanks for the great idea!

  17. Meagan says:

I’ve learned the hard way(by fussy cutting over 100 hot air balloons for a baby shower) that I’m definitely a matching die kind of girl.

  18. Teresa Cherka says:

I think these cards are so cute. It really depends if budget allows to buy the coordinating dies to a stamp set. If I am trying to make my crafting dollar stretch then I might only buy the dies that are intricate and can’t easily be fussy cut. Thanks for taking us on this kindness journey, I always look forward to your reading your posts. You inspire me with all your ideas, you remind us that the world could use more kindness.

  19. Carolyn says:

    Hi Jennifer,

I always purchase the matching dies when I buy the stamps as they save me a lot of time. For that reason I think they are worth the investment.

  20. Leslie S. says:

Another great video! I always buy the coordinating dies for my stamps. I’m so bad at fussy cutting and the dies make it so much easier. Thank you for the tip about the packing foam. I’m definitely going to start using this!

  21. JENNI B says:

Yes I am a die girl all the way, I HATE fussy cutting. However I have been seriously interested in getting a cutting machine that I can scan any of my stamps and cut them out. I was thinking of the scanNcut2 but I like the cameo better but not sure if the cameo can do that? I need to research more 🙂

  22. Metty says:

Love the techniques, as always! Thanks

  23. Nanajoy says:

Love those little monsters. Thanks for another great video.

I always try to get the coordinating die sets for the stamps that I buy. I have a cricut machine so I cut everything else with that. I love coordinating die sets!

  28. Janet says:

I do like coordinating dies, especially for intricate images. The mask idea is brilliant.

  29. Sharon M says:

  31. Beth Lowery says:

I Love coordinating dies! I’m not much of a fussy cutter, so these are great! Adorable images in this set.

  32. Ann Benda says:

I most certainly prefer the dies with the stamps. It’s the instant gratification of it all that I love! Thanks for the cute card ideas.

  33. KellyRae says:

Coordinating dies makes it so much easier than fussy cutting. It seems now I determine new purchases only if there ARE coordinating dies lol. Darling cards and thanks for the masking tip.

  34. sandy says:

I love the dies, however my budget does not allow it for most stamp sets.I think if I were to use a particular stamp set a lot……then it would be worth it. But as for now I cut out my images.

  35. Amy R says:

I definitely love getting coordinating dies and this video has definitely given me another use for them! Thanks so much!
    Amy

  36. Melodie Hennig says:

I am always trying to purchase the die-cuts with coordinated stamp sets. TFS this video on the die masking technics. Very helpful for me.

  37. Tami B says:

These cards are so cute & what a great idea. I don’t always get the coordinating dies, but several times I have regretted not getting them and gone back & purchased them later.

  38. stacey says:

I love coordinating dies!! I am not overly fond of cutting out items with just scissors, so the dies make my life much easier!!

  39. AnnW says:

I love coordinating dies and stamp sets. They make life so easy for those of us who are not skilled at fussy cutting! Thank you for sharing another way to use the matching dies!
    Ann

  40. Jennifer L. says:

I find it depends on the stamp set. I often wait and see how often I’m fussy-cutting stamped images out before I commit to buying the dies just because they’re so expensive.

  41. Sarah O across the sea says:

I have several stamps with matching dies, I tend to buy the ones for the complicated cuts or ones which I know I will use lots. Last year I bought the paper smooches Christmas Blessings and will be using this great technique with them, I think it will work especially well with the dove.
Love the idea of the card shower for the children, I know it will lift the parents as well as the children to know they are being thought of.
    You are a blessing.

  42. Heather says:

I absolutely love these! I am having baby boy in a few months and these stamps would be perfect to make cute decorations for his room!

  43. John K. says:

I do like the coordinating dies because it cuts them out so perfectly, but normally I can’t afford them and just buy the stamp set. I would rather have two stamp sets than just one and its coordinating die. If it is a stamp set that I end up using a ton, or if I find it on sale somewhere, I try to grab it while I can.

  44. I love getting coordinating dies with my stamp set. The dies can be expensive so I buy ones that I know I’ll use often.

  45. Jody V says:

I like coordinating dies and stamps. I do not like to fussy cut. Thanks.

  46. Elaine says:

Absolutely love getting coordinating dies with stamps….makes crafting easier.

  47. D.Ann C says:

With one exception, I love coordinating dies as I detest fussy cutting, but they’re usually out of my budget. The exception is coordinating dies that are solid… you can’t see the inside and can’t get them perfect. so frustrating!

  48. Roxanna W says:

Very cute cards, Thanks for the tip on stretching our dies. I do try to buy the coordinating dies to match the stamps because my fussy cutting I don’t think is very good. Thanks Jennifer!

  49. Annie S. says:

I love coordinating dies with my stamps. Much faster than fussy cutting! : )

  50. Kathryn A says:

These cute monsters just make me smile! And yes, I almost always get the coordinating dies. I really don’t like cutting images out by hand.
