Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

I used to hand make decorations for the holidays when my kids were younger. They are not so interested now since they are teens, but I may just go ahead and make something this year. If I’m lucky they will want to help!

  3. Rachel says:

Not quite decorations, but last year I baked 188 dozen cookies and put together 50 boxes of my baked goodness with cards (handmade) for all the soldiers/families in my husbands company. I had them at our holiday party so everyone could take them home. Our electric bill was insane that month – LOL. Happy Holidays!

  4. Ruth H says:

Great video Jennifer! I will have to give the technique a try the next time I am layering shapes. My daughter and I make ornaments and gift tags for the holidays.

I love these place settings you did for the teacher’s gift! Thank you for sharing handmade kindness to teachers 🙂 My husband teaches at a community college, and we also support all teachers!!! Thank you!
This year I made a mason jar snow globe as a decoration. I will be bringing it to Hawaii and giving it to my Mom. My parents live in Hawaii and don’t do a tree, but do a little decorated plant. The jar snow globe will be a perfect addition to her little area 🙂 Thanks for the constant inspiration!

  25. Tammy Whitley says:

Oh my goodness, I have made so many hand made decorations over the years for the holidays. With the kids and the Grandkids. Of course there was a time I couldn’t afford decorations so everything was handmade and I loved everything I made. It may not have been as beautiful as store bought, but I thought they were beautiful. I have made decorations for my Mom and Dad too, when I didn’t have enough money to buy them gifts, along with baking for them. Handmade is usually more appreciated than store bought. Most of my family and friends know that it takes a lot of love and time to make decorations, so they appreciate them more. As I do, I love getting handmade items from my friends!!! Thank you for an awesome video as always! Blessings!

  26. Sue Rose says:

I always want to, but always run out of time between making Christmas cards and many, many cookies!!

  27. Val says:

What a generous giveaway!! For Christmas, I like making little bags, or boxes and fill them with little treats. I place one at each place setting. Just a little treat and my family enjoys those more than having the traditional crackers.

  28. Jamie Payne says:

Oh yes, I use to be in charge of organizing a big “christmas craft” every year for the lady’s in my church. We made snow men out of our stirofoam balls and socks, christmas trees out of garland and clothes hangers, and nativity Ornaments out of popsicle sticks.

  29. Nanna RL says:

I have a mix of christmas decorations. I make a lot of christmas decorations in paper and i give them to friends! Share handmade kindness!

  30. Dena says:

I would never had thought about moving the leaf die to make a second smaller die cut. Thanks for sharing.

  31. Ronda says:

I always send hand made cards to family and friends and give plates of various homemade items to my grandchildren

  32. Dana says:

I have made a few decorations through the years, but not every year. I should start!!

  33. Lin says:

I LOVE your idea for these place settings, Jennifer! Though I haven’t made many decorations for Thanksgiving, I usually try to make a special paper decoration of some kind (often an ornament) for eachChristmas. This year it may be a forest of those pine trees from Concord & 9th……I have just the place for them!

  34. Cteet3 says:

I have in the past but not this year, I am doing handmade Christmas cards for the first time.

  35. I love this idea! I may sound boring but I get inspired by many of the things you teach us! Thank you, you are a great teacher as well! I always make handmade decorations and this year I will make tags that will have a poem and that every Christmas guest can take with them, I will place them beside their name on the table.

  36. Natalie Winterstein says:

I have made ornaments and banners! I make cards, which I also think can be decorative! 🙂 These are cute and a great technique to stretch our dies!

  37. Annie24 says:

Hi Jennifer. I’m a new stamper and die cutter in country Australia. Your blog and youtube channel are my go to places for inspiration. So far my stamping is pretty terrible – but there are improvements as every one of your handy helpers comes in the post. Thank you!!
I love to hand make at Christmas. A quilted table runner was last year’s project.
This year it has to be something with paper and ink and embossing and foiling…?

  38. Mai says:

Beautiful place settings, I love the wood paper! I make little holiday decorations to place on my mantel since we don’t own our own Christmas tree. I really want a small tree this year to hang some handmade ornaments.

  39. Laura Ricketts says:

We always made place setting labels for company, decorated in a holiday theme. I love to add homemade napkin rings that I’ve made from beads and shiny balls! I have also made a Thanksgiving centerpiece one year, but it didn’t do as well as I hoped…kept falling apart! But we make door decorations, stuff to put around the house (and things that need dusting!) to get us in the holiday spirit and frame of mind!

  40. Vickie D. says:

Yes I make placemats and name cards for thanksgiving dinner. Different decor like a paper mâché turkey for the center of the table. This year I plane to make paper flowers. Thank you for this chance.

  41. angela says:

that is so cool to stamp on wood looks great

  42. Dee says:

I don’t as much anymore, but when my son was young each year i’d decorate to an entirely different theme…. And 90% of the things were handmade.

  43. changedbyHim says:

Yes. It was usually helping my son make them or my Mom. Those are great memories for me. Mom had a beloved recipe for Santa Claus sugar cookies that we all helped to decorate. Some of these actually hung on the tree. When our friends and neighbors came over for the Christmas holidays, they always asked for the famous cookies which had sprinkled red sugar (over red food coloring) for his hat, cheeks, nose & mouth; raisins for his eyes; & white icing for his brows, beard & whiskers. While the beard was still wet, the last step was to apply white coconut. We ended up with coconut everywhere as well as the red sugar. Those really were different days. Thanks for all you do to make this world a better place.

  44. Shari says:

Those are some amazing place settings. I would love to have a Thanksgiving table with something so awesome. However, my family is huge, so we eat at several tables in several rooms. haha It’s awesome though. Always a wonderful time, and so grateful for my huge family. Thanks so much for the video. I’ll have to get my hands on some of the wood veneer paper. ♥

  45. Holly H. says:

I love these place settings and how thoughtful for you to just do it! I make decorations and gifts every year for the holidays. It is a family tradition.

  46. Michelle Early says:

I have made many kinds of decorations for the holidays. Place cards, ornaments and banners are my favorite things to create. I like your double die cutting technique and will look for possibilities for some of my dies.

  47. Pamela Knopf says:

When we entertain, I always make place cards for each person. I enjoy entertaining and making the table inviting and comfortable. Thanks for the chance to win that Misti

  48. Amy seigler says:

I have made decorations for the holidays. Last year I made Christmas trees from punching out trees and layering them.

  49. Vrege Stetson says:

One year my son & I made napkin rings for our Thanksgiving get together and we even mailed some for those who would not be able to make it. I love your blog & have gotten so many wondered ideas from you. Thank you for sharing your talents.

  50. Nancy C says:

I love making stamped candles for Christmas gifts and to use myself during the holidays.
