Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

  2. Wow, you are super generous, you really are living your “share handmade kindness” message! Such a gorgeous project. I’d love to try out a Misti tool but I just can’t justify the expense at the moment, so thanks for the chance to win.

  3. When I used to do ceramics, I made quite a few decorations and then when I first got into paper crafting I did some as well. I need to get back to doing that!

  9. The leaves you made are wonderful!! Many years ago, I hand stamped craft butcher paper with erasers I carved myself and wrapped all of my family’s gifts with this. I was so proud of myself for that project. Glad I did then before my family grew too large!!!! Happy Holidays!!!!

  10. I do love Thanksgiving and all things fall. Your leaf place settings are gorgeous! The way you used the Misty magnets to tie the ribbon is the best idea since sliced bread! I don’t have a Misty but I do have a metal sheet and magnets to help me keep track of my place when I’m working on a cross stitching project. I’m going to dig them out and give this idea a try.

  11. i love making decorations for the holidays. I stopped for a few years. Time and energy (lack of) got the better of me, but having a two year old grand child has encouraged me to once again give my home and home life 110% even when I’m tired!

    Grammie Rules!!

  12. I haven’t ever handmade holiday decorations, but I have made various banners with my crafty supplies. 🙂 I do want to try to make some window decorations this year.

  13. I’ve always meant to make my own decorations, but mostly end up stockpiling craft supplies without following through on the making. I love these place settings, and am hoping to try my hand at making a couple for Thanksgiving this year!

  14. Although I don’t celebrate the holidays, we have family dinner once a month with our children and grandchildren. Last month my granddaughters (ages 3 and 6) and I made decorations for the table using real leaves and mod podge on cardboard squares and then put tea candles in little glass holders in the middle–one for each place setting. Very festive and great fun for the girls to be part of! The Misti looks like an amazing tool for stampers!

  15. Yes I’ve handmade decorations for Christmas and love to do it however with two little ones sometimes they don’t actually get completed until the next year.
