Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

What an ingenious way to get more use out of your dies! I will have to try it with my dies.

So smart to use the MISTI to hold the leaves while trying on the twine and ribbon bows.

Thanks for the giveaway and have a great weekend!

Oh, I’m in love! I love leaves and this technique!!! Unfortunately I’ve never created handmade decorations for the holidays. I’m not really good, I started only last years with cards.

  11. Liddia says:

Oh my yes, I make quite a few of my own holiday decorations! When you have the card making supplies, you can branch out into other projects. I love your respect for teachers. They can always use the little extras that we give them. I think the Misti tool would be so nice to have. Thank you

I’m planning to make some amigurumi bears and bunnies for the Christmas tree!

  13. Michele W says:

I love making decorations for all occasions. For Christmas I usually make an ornament for each of my 19 nieces and nephews and I also like making different decorations for the home to give as gifts. Thanks for another great video with a lot of great tips. The Misti looks like a tool everyone should have. I love the tip about using the magnets when tying the bows. I’ll have to see if I can find something I can use like that because it really does look like it makes things easier.

  14. Linda F says:

These are lovely. I have handpainted decorations many years ago in my folkart painting days. I have recently made some ornaments from lasercut snowflakes.

  15. ssmamiya says:

A couple of years ago my youngest daughter and I redid our Christmas tree decorations by making them out of stamped and die cut snowflakes! We added sheer ribbon bows and hand made pompoms in coordinating colors making all the decorations by hand. It really turned out wonderful and we are still using them! I also did a stamped autumn banner for my cubicle at work this year. I have crocheted garlands for Spring, Valentine’s, and St. Patrick’s Day too. I really like the feel of handmade/homemade things. It makes such a big difference knowing each piece was made by hand and full of heart and soul.

  16. Vivienne says:

Every year our extended family celebrates with an Australian version of a Danish Christmas. We love it, and we all pitch in to create a different atmosphere each year
with home made decor to suit the theme. This year the theme is JOY.

WOW, I love the leaves and I am going to try to get some done for our thanksgiving dinner.
I do make handmade ornaments. This year I am making a lot of snowflake ornaments. emboss them them different simple designs, and then heat emboss the designs to make them sparkle and stand out. They are awesome in the window or on gift packages too.
Thank Jennifer for you great videos.

  22. Arina O says:

My first year as a “head over heels in-love” paper crafter I decided to do handmade gift wrap for Christmas gifts. I had grossly underestimated what this type of project would entail…it was not small, cute, regular size boxes I was trying to wrap! My gifts ended up looking like they were wrapped by a 1st grader with her 1st glue gun! My husband and family were good sports about it & I’ve stuck to premade papers since.

  23. Chris Handy says:

I have made many handmade things for Christmas, mostly hand embroidered, we each have a stocking, I am working on one for my youngest grandson. I have made embroidered ornaments and a tole painted Father Christmas plaque and a Santa Claus porcelain doll. I love handmade items.
    Thanks for all your inspiration.

  24. What a wonderful thing for you to do! I love the wood grain paper with all of those fall colors. The added shading around the edge is so pretty! Using the magnets is a brilliant idea to tie those bows! I have had the Misti on my wish list for some time now. Such a great product! I used to cross stitch a lot and made a ton or ornaments but I haven’t ever made any decorations with paper. May have to give that a try this year! Thanks for all you do Jennifer 🙂

  25. Valerie Babcock says:

I haven’t made very many seasonal home decor projects, but the few I do have, I love!

  30. Liza says:

Oh Jennifer your video is awesome, and I love how easy you can inspire me to do more craft projects each day. Although this year I won’t be able to make too many crafts I have made projects before. Last year I created Christmas soap bottle holder tags for my office gifts and also did candy bag toppers. Is it very rewarding to see people’s face lit up when they know took time to do a little something for them. Thanks for your sharing your work!

These are beautiful! I think I would love to try this technique on poinsettias for Christmas place settings. As always, thanks for sharing your amazing inspiration!

  37. Dorrie Toth says:

We make a yearly decoration starting the first year we were married, I use a red glass Christmas ball and put the date on it using glue and glitter. When Tommy was born his ball was blue. When Carolyn was born her ball was Silver, and Mike’s ball was gold. some times went a message on the ball using a permanent marker. Like the year Tommy was at war or the year all three adults were home. I say was and were because my children are adults with their own homes now. Tom and I stopped making the balls at about our 50th Anniversery because with 5 new balls every year the tree was getting a little heavy. I love your Blog and I look at all your videos on UTube. I am still crafting and creating and loving life. God blessed me with a wonderful husband and three good children. I am grateful. Thank you for all you do, Dorrie Toth

  38. Heather T says:

I like to create the place settings for each holiday meal. Kids have fun placing them on the table and “telling” everyone where to sit.

  39. Nanette says:

We love making Thanksgiving place cards with the kids! So cute and great way to get them involved! I also like having ornament parties with my girlfriends. Everyone brings an ornament to share and we make a day of it. Love being around creative people!

  40. Marianne says:

Gorgeous place settings, Jennifer. I don’t normally make any handmade decorations for the holidays, but it’s never too late to start…

  41. rosesue2 says:

Oh yes!! When my kids were toddlers which was a long time ago. I made all the ornaments for our tree from material and stuffed each one. The material came that way. I thought it was a great idea since I didn’t have to worry about them breaking. ha I taught my son to crochet when he was in the 1st grade and me made red garland for the tree with single crochets. So cool! I’ve made name place settings. Golly I remember my Mom always did that for Thanksgiving and Christmas. All for now!

  42. fizzy says:

I make most of my holiday decorations — but I’m definitely going to make some of these leaves for my Thanksgiving table!!!! Great project. Wendy

  43. Amy C says:

Beautiful place settings! Very fun and interesting idea for Thanksgiving! I used to make homemade tree decorations when I was a kid, but haven’t made any since. I think I need to fix that! Keep up the amazing work 🙂

  44. Lori Hefner says:

Love your place settings! I make my own centerpieces and napkin holders. There’s usually tags and banners involved:)

  45. Jill says:

Love those leaves. I always make my own table decorations.

  46. Marie Andersson says:

I have done/just making pointsettas in papper for chrismasdecorations as cards, candleholders, wreaths and to all kind of things. Even making mixed media-paintings for christmas (just started to use brusho and love your instructions). Never heard of this smart stamping-tool but seems great! Always make you want more stuff to use…. =)

  47. dktbdt04 says:

I actually just finished a Christmas themed cross stitch table runner last night. It was going to be for me, but I think I might give it away to someone else who I know would love it. I’m feeling inspired.

  48. deannadsc says:

Love the leaves, I am looking forward to trying the wood paper on a project. When my son was in cub scouts and learning about recycling, he decided we should decorate the light bulbs that had to be replaced instead of throwing them away. First year was snow paint and they all looked like Frosty. Gave them to his teacher and all the aunts and grandparents. It became a yearly tradition, and his teachers all have a collection of Grinch, Santa, toy soldiers, penguins and raggedy Ann and Andy. It was fun working with him as he came up with ideas each year.

  49. Jenny says:

I don’t usually make that many Christmas decorations, unless I see something super cute on Pinterest. But I crochet, so I typically make some crocheted items as gifts for friends and family.

  50. I make handmade decorations for my homes such as banners and place settings for Christmas.
The misti is a great tool… if I happened to be selected, please pass it on another person as I already am lucky enough to have one.

    Thanks!
