Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

  20. SJ says:

My Mom and I made holiday decorations as gifts every year for more than 25 year until she was tragically killed in 2005. We started with ornaments and small crafts and worked our way to sewing and embroidering placemats, towels, pillows, blanket, table runners and more. We had so much fun planning, sewing/embroidering and giving our gifts. Our list was 20-25 relatives and friends. We rarely started early enough so we were often sewing on Christmas day.

I always handmade some decorations for Christmas. Last year I made a beautiful outdoor evergreen planter and wreath. This year I will be doing both of those once again, as well as a table centerpiece. I also try to do other things like making Christmas Crackers, etc. And of course cards – for family, for friends, for the service people who make our lives easier and more comfortable, for neighbours, and many which I donate to local charities each year, along with tags and gift card holders. I love Christmas and the spirit that makes my heart soar!

  27. Geri S. says:

Loved this video, such a great way to get more out of a die.

    Sheree xx

Every holiday I make at least one decoration hand made. That’s all the fun.

  48. Linda Partch says:

I have been a crafter all my life and have been a girl scout and a brownie leader, so making Christmas decor and tree trimmings has been a yearly event. I think one of my favorites was making ice cream cone ornaments. Using a styrofoam ball instead of ice cream, glued into an ice cream cone and then decorated with multicolored glitter glue.
Love seeing the children’s faces when they have created something sparkly to go onto their family tree.

  49. yuki-hayashi says:

I make decorations for christmas just for something unique and something the family would enjoy. Mum and dad bring the food, I bring the bling!

  50. Jo K. says:

I have always tried to make a new ornament each year. – crossstitch, crewel work, painting on wood, using foam shapes and a variety of beads, or paper ornaments. These have been added to our Christmas tree yearly, my son treasures them all. He appreciates the handmade ornaments the most.
