Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this video and all you showed us how to do in this video with the double cut die cutting and the Misti tool and Misti magnets! I’d love to have a Misti!!! I always make lots of paper crafting decorations for the holidays. Right now my project is to make paper ornaments for my daughter’s Christmas tree so that her precious one year old can safely explore the tree and touch the ornaments without worrying about him getting hurt or about ornament breakage… loads of fun!!!

Thank you Jennifer for showing this idea. It is perfect for my gathering on Monday. I have a leaf die set that works perfectly for this. I have already started cutting the leaves. As far as making handmade holiday decorations, yes I have. The first time was going on 40 years ago, I made all the Christmas ornaments for my husband’s and my 1st wedding anniversary/Christmas. We were in the military living in Italy and our 2 1/2 ft tall tree needed small ornaments and I could not find any. I found a kit and made them out of felt, sequins, “pipe cleaners” and ribbon. We still have them.

  10. Kristine A. says:

I make ornaments by hand every year for Christmas decorations and as gifts for friends and family. It is a tradition started with my mom as a kid and I hope to continue it with my kids once they’re older!

  11. Amy Cooley says:

I don’t normally handmake decorations unless I’m in charge of the craft for my son’s class party. I’m doing well to get my cards made and treats baked!

  12. Deepa Lakshman says:

I have never made any, but was planning on making a winter wreath for the front door. I like the idea about using the fire to get a smaller size.

  23. Maryann W. says:

  24. Reanna says:

You are one of the kindest, most generous people I’ve ever seen. Over the years, I’ve made many holiday decorations (too many to count!). It’s so much fun being able to show someone and say “I made that!”. And your MISTI tip is brilliant! My nails are longer, so I have a hard time with small things like ribbon. This trick will come in very handy 🙂

  25. Marsha S. says:

I have always loved making handmade decorations for Christmas ever since I was a child. When our children were very young, I made 20, small felt (stuffed ) Teddy bear Christmas ornaments for our tree. Now that our daughter has 2 young sons, I am going to give her half of them for their tree. I am saving the other half for our son when he and his wife start their family. Thank you Iliana and Jennifer for YOUR kindness (and the chance to win.) Let’s ALL try harder to pay it forward, STARTING with kindness…

  41. Lindsey says:

I have added tissue-stamped images to candles for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and my tree has a few handcrafted ornaments as well. Your double die-cutting here works so well, as does making some of the leaves from wood paper. Beautiful!

  42. Lynne Phelps says:

I make batches of ornaments every year to give out to my extended family. Last year it was angels with the body made from old, falling apart Bible pages and the wings from old hymnals. I loved it that the Angels were made of the Word and held aloft by the songs of heaven! This year I am making doves the same way. I put the year and family name also. They have been a huge hit!

  43. charliemmh says:

I make handmade cards and notecards for gifts . Thanks for the contest.

I have made ornaments, hand-painted ceramic ornaments, Christmas chair covers and Christmas wreaths.

  46. Kit says:

I don’t usually make decorations for myself but last year I made personalize ornaments for family and friends using glitter and vinyl and they were very well received.

  47. Louise says:

These are wonderful. Thanks. We don’t celebrate Thanksgiving here, but at Christmas I make my own bonbons. I ask the family to make up their own silly Christmas joke, and I print them out and insert them inside the bonbons, making sure no one gets the joke they contributed. Plus I get to include fun surprises inside the bonbons. Lots of fun. Thanks for the chance to win a MISTI!

  48. Cheryl I says:

I have made many different ornaments over the years. It’s always fun to try a new technique and new styles on my tree. I loved this video and the information you shared regarding double die cutting!

  49. Denise Fonda says:

Last year I made cinnamon and applesauce ornaments and used Brown Bag molds to form them. In 2013, I made wreaths by pinking shear 4″ squares, out of Christmas design fabric. I pushed them into a round straw wreath with a screwdriver until the straw wreath was covered. So much fun and people love homemade gifts!

  50. Lisa Silver says:

    These are lovely!

I do make holiday decorations. Every year, I try to make one new project to add to our decorations, like a wreath, a watercolored picture or ornaments.
