Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

I am always making handmade decorations for Christmas, sometimes it takes me long time. Now I am finishing some cross stitch tree ornaments for my mum, but they are a little complicated and I am not sure if they will be finished for this Christmas.

I have made several handmade holiday decorations with my silhouette. A great tool for making 3D pieces! I gave away large gingerbread house gift boxes full of great stuff to friends. All courtesy of SVGCuts and their cutting files.

  4. Yiming Hao says:

I make greeting cards every year, and from this year I started to make hanging decorations from die cuts (mainly snow flakes, die cut a few, and glue them all together with a string in the middle for hanging) and frame some of my cards to give to people as presents.

  5. shartl says:

Yes, I like to make holiday decorations with my 5 year old and we always decorate the house from top to bottom. She likes to have something special for her room so we make little ornaments and hang them on a small tabletop tree. I also make tags and labels for home baked goods that I give to our neighbors and friends.

I’ve never tried making hand-made Christmas/Holiday decorations, but have always wanted to! During this time of year, time is at a premium and I’m just happy sharing my love of cardmaking with my family & friends!

  7. Rissa says:

I haven’t done hand made decorations in ages, but getting back into card making had definitely got me inspired to try other things! I absolutely adore these little place settings and the double die cutting technique was something I never would have thought of myself! Thanks for sharing!

These leaves are fantastic! It inspires me to use your idea/technique to make place cards for Thanksgiving. Cardmaking is my #1 hobby, but hand-making decorations for all holidays is my second favorite hobby. Christmas is my favorite holiday for decorating. This year, I plan on making clear ornaments with scenes inside them. So excited for the holiday season…just can’t believe how fast it got here. As always, thanks for your generosity in sharing your ideas and also this awesome giveaway!

What an awesome technique! I recently bought that die, but haven’t used it yet. I am going to give this a shot. Thanks for sharing.

  10. Kari V. says:

I’m working on handmade card ideas for Christmas now! I hope I can make them in time with two small granddaughters living with me. 😉 I love the leaves for the table!!

  11. JanM says:

These are just beautiful. Thank you for video and tips. I have not made decorations, mostly due to not having the right supplies. I did handwrite and emboss some place cards for the table once.

  12. jengd says:

I have a few decorations I’ve made but quite a few of our Christmas tree ornaments were handmade by me, my mother, my husband and a few by our son.

  13. sck54 says:

I make ornaments for a my family every Christmas and as the family continues to grow, it becomes a bit more challenging to get them done on time. I guess I shouldn’t complain since my sister does all the work for all the holiday dinners!!

  14. Memoriesbymanda says:

Wow! To win a Misti would be amazing!
I have made Christmas decorations like place settings and crackers one Christmas. Now my family is scattered our Christmas is much simpler

  15. deb pereira says:

Yes! I make a banner for my mantel every Christmas. love the ideas in your video.

  16. J4TRAK16 says:

Some years I am better at making things.. other times it seems that the time just flies by! The good news is when I do make something, I am normally able to keep it safe for a bit of time.. FLAT decorations are a LOT less likely to get crushed LOL. I learned that the hard way.. LOL. A really nice video and I’m sure the teacher will put them to good use.

  17. mallan says:

    Beautiful!

  18. MS says:

Awesome video! We have a huge Christmas Open House. All our friends look forward to see what I’ve decked out the house with, it always includes handmade decorations. The invitations are all handmade (known to make 100 for one party) and included with each is paper ornament to be used on a live tress we provide which is donated to our town after the holidays. They plant the tree in one of our many parks.

  19. Mary says:

I’ve never hand made decorations but you have given some great ideas and tips to start! Thanks!

  20. Amber McGary says:

I have been making handmade decorations since I was a little girl.

  21. Sue D. says:

Thanks Jennifer for sharing another beautiful project! What a lucky lady your son’s teacher is!!
We live a distance for most of our relatives, so I make and send cards for each of the holidays for family and close friends that we can’t be with. I used to wonder if they enjoyed getting them as much as I enjoyed making them. Recently my Mom and a sister-in-law both told me they save them and get them out to display when a specific holiday comes around again. So I’ll keep up the tradition and add to their collection. I have always involved my three daughters in making home made holiday decorations to celebrate in a new and unique way. They are all grown now, but we still save time make table decorations, door wreaths, etc when we get together. It really makes the holidays special.

  22. Robin says:

Love those leaves! I try to add something homemade to my decorations each year.

  23. Iryna Kostikova says:

Thanks for the inspiration and the opportunity to receive such a gift.
I do often for their loved ones various ornaments and cards, but without the use of such a super-tool for stamping. You out very quickly and efficiently. Just super.

  24. Jackie J says:

Hand made decorations is how I found card making and I am so glad I did.. about three years ago I wanted to make some place settings and table decorations for Christmas, and now I am an absolute paper addict.

  25. Valerie Serfozo says:

I love to make fancy tags for gifts. Love these leaves!

  26. Gail A says:

Yes, I often make handmade items for the holidays! I’m going to look through my stash (or maybe just buy the leaf die) and make a set of these to send to my cousins for Thanksgiving. They always have Thanksgiving at their house, but we moved far away several years ago and cannot attend. This will mean a part of me is at their house with everyone else!

  27. Pcrusberg says:

At our church we adopt families in need and decorate our Christmas tree with tags that have lists of items needed for the families. It’s a lot of fun and it’s nice to see the tree emptied of tags and the boxes for the families fill up!

  28. Maureen Chandler says:

I love making handmade gifts for the holidays – knitted hats & scarves, paper Christmas decorations, & my annual snack mix! Thanks for the video – love the leaves!!!

  29. Dina says:

I have had my kids make snowflakes for the windows, also have made pocket cones with lollies inside to hang from the xmas tree and name tags for the table. Ty for the chance of winning….love your videos too

I have mass produced Christmas Cards and thank You Cards for a number of years. I do like to emboss on my cards as well. I like the production line of this process.

  34. Judy B says:

What a great technique for the die cuts and using your Misti to hold them so you can tie the bows. I have made some small ornament tags for the tree with pictures inside. This is especially nice when the pictures are of loved ones who are now longer with us. Love watching your videos.

  35. Barb Ghig says:

Your place settings are gorgeous, Jennifer! Perfect for Thanksgiving, too! I create all of my holiday decorations, and take care to store them with love for years to come! Thank you so much for a chance to win!

  37. Kit says:

We do make decorations. We don’t do as many as we used to. It just depends on time. Your place settings are wonderful!

  38. Laraine R says:

Love the double die cutting. I don’t make alot of decoration. I do make ornaments for the tree and also give some for gifts! The misti looks like a tool I need to check out! Thanks for the chance to win!

  39. Sally K says:

I love to make handmade things to make things feel more personal. However sometimes time doesn’t cooperate! Last year I did sew a cute little valance for my kitchen window with some adorable striped fabric and added my favorite gingerbread boy wide ribbon. It goes with my gingerbread kitchen and just makes me happy!

  40. Patti G says:

I love making homemade items for gifts!

  41. I love Christmas and decorating my home to celebrate the birth of my Savior Jesus. I do this decorating over the 4 days Thanksgiving weekend and then I host a small dinner party usually the 1st Sunday night of December I always make a “plate gift” as I call them for each person attending. It us usually an ornament or an tag that they can reuse on a Christmas package to pass along. The guests always enjoy seeing what it is I came up with for the year. I love the idea of the offset leaves & how clever are you Jennifer to use strong magnets to hold the paper in place to tie ribbons on the leaf stems. Thanks for sharing and may God bless you with a wonderful holiday season.

  42. Amy McCue says:

I do make handmade things for the holidays. I make English toffee and love to package it up nicely.

  43. Heather says:

I used to handmake decorations, but I haven’t in quite a while. The MISTI is definitely on my Christmas wish list. It would be great to win one!

  44. Yes, I have made homemade decorations. I enjoy doing it. 🙂

  45. Chesney says:

I try do something handmade each Christmas season. Sometimes it’s given away as a gift and sometimes we add it to our own decorations. I’m feeling pretty hopeful this year because I’ve got more than one project on the books. We (myself and the kids) are working on an advent calendar for our home and I’m also planning to make my nieces and nephew personalized ornaments. Thanks for the giveaway and thanks for sharing your creations with us!

  46. PjP says:

I make decorations (and gifts) for the holidays (and for Halloween) every year: there’s a lot more to paper-crafting than cards ya know 🙂

  47. Karen Rice says:

I have made homemade decorations for the holidays! It is such a feeling of accomplishment! I would love to do this project too! The Misti would definitely make mass producing easier!

  48. Jane says:

I have never made place cards for a holiday but made the place cards for my daughters wedding last month out of a pumpkin die. They were white pumpkins with the name and table number. Love your place cards and everything you make. Thank you for sharing all your ideas.
