Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

Through the years, I always tried to have a hand made gift for my girl guests. One year I made everyone a scarf and another time I mod podged a Thanksgiving picture on a clear plate and placed it on a stand.

Great leaves for the place settings. I would have never thought to die cut the leaf a second time with the same die to get a smaller one. Thanks for sharing and the chance to win.

Jennifer, I swear you are the most giving person on the planet. I’m going to nominate you for sainthood. What you do with your talents is way above and beyond! Anyhoooo, yes, I love to make handmade place cards for our dinners. We’re 15 without guests, and we almost always have guests. This year we’ll be 19 for Thanksgiving, so I just finished cutting little turkeys for the place cards. And my MISTI is in use creating Christmas cards. What you made for Colin’s teacher – well, if she doesn’t flip over them, I’ll eat my hat. Love what you do, Jennifer.

  30. Lavonne says:

I have made my own decorations at times. It’s been a while though – no motivation. 🙁 Anyway, nice place setting tags. Thanks for the chance to win a MISTI. 🙂

  40. Sandra says:

This is a beautiful idea! Thanks for posting. I am new to this hobby but am so inspired by the different crafts you have demonstrated. The Misti stamping pad and the Copic markers look like great additions to my craft tools … but the price of each is rather considerable so I will have to put them on my Santa list. I really appreciate all the column comments, too — such creative and innovative ideas from the ladies! I look forward to my daily Jennifer McGuire update via email with all the videos. Two nights ago I spent a very enjoyable evening watching many of your YouTube videos on my TV via Roku. Thanks for giving me new inspiration to have fun in my autumnal years!

  41. I usually don’t hand make things for the holidays because I usually run out of time – but I do enjoy to when I can!! Thanks for the tips and giveaway!

  42. Michele says:

Yes! I love making handmade items, especially for gifts. But, I also love it for decorating.
Thanks for the chance to win. This tool looks awesome.
    Sharon 🙂

  44. Pat McCleary says:

First, let me say- you are THE most thoughtful person. I agree teachers do not get the appreciation they deserve & each one should have a parent like you. To answer your question- I usually just make my cards. But I did just print a graphic for a turkey & assembled it for my grandson with magnets. Thanks for a chance to win in your so generous giveaway.

  45. Lynda says:

I make decorations for work for most holidays. In fact, I have been working on a banner for Christmas today. The people on our floor seem very appreciative.

  46. Katharina says:

    Hi Jennifer 🙂
this was very informative and inspiring. Thank you! I make the adventcalendars for my boys every year myself 🙂
They are 18 and 16 now, but still are going crazy about the adventcalendars ^_^
    xoxo Katharina

  47. Debby J says:

I always make my Christmas cards(different ones every year!!)and gift tags and usually find decorations that I just have to make too. Of course I am usually working right up to the end

  48. Debbie says:

I prefer to make whatever I can for my holiday decorations, whether it be for Valentine’s Day or fall/Thanksgiving, Christmas or Easter. One of my favorites is as stuffed scarecrow I made for fall. He even has real straw sticking out of his shirt and pants. Adorable!

  49. Mary K says:

Those place cards are beautiful! I just love them and may try to do something like that for my Thanksgiving table. I don’t make decorations as much as little gifts for my niece and nephew… and now for my grand nephews. I send them boxes filled with handmade items and little gifts for various holidays and seasons. They love it – and really enjoy the things I make for them, which just thrills me, too.

  50. cindy m says:

I always make cards! one year, when most of my grandkids were under 4, all gift tags I made were scanned photos of each recipient so the preschoolers coul;d “play Santa”! SO FUN!
