Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

I just love all ur creations. Love, love the leaf place cards! I have always tried to do some type of holiday craft with my daughter. Last year we made tons of snowman for Christmas ornaments and package decoration. Cotton balls, multiple colors of felt, black and orange puff paint, and tiny pompoms. Triangle cut felt rolled together (makes the cutest hat, attach tiny pompom at tip) and then matching scarfs cut fringe edges. This is still our all time favorite project. This years we are making our own Christmas cards (one of urs with the adorable lawn fawn stamped reindeer and the stamped wreath with ombre ink). Love the ease of the misti. Great concept. Thanks again for the chance to win one.

Wow! You are so generous! What a thoughtful thing for you to do. This isn’t in the papercrafting realm but every year we put on a haunted house, one year I made 100 teddy bear rice krispie squares from a mould I have and dressed them for Halloween. I made a tag to put around thier necks with our name and address so the parents knew where they came from. The kids loved them!

  3. Liesbeth Verhaeghe says:

I like doing place cards every year. I also love die cut and distress inked leaves scattered on the table.

I have never felt the confidence that I could make something worthy of being a decoration I could display! But I have learned so much from watching your videos that I think I will try! You make it all seem so easy and it always comes out beautiful!

  6. Tracy Johnston says:

I LOVED your double die idea!! I usually have my nieces and nephew make up name place cards and they love it. This year I am going to use your idea and have them help stamp names on. It will give them opportunity at spelling, stamping, and time together creating. LOVE IT!!

I have a twig tree( from branches in my yard) and I decorate it for each season for my grandsons to check out (and for me). 🙂 I have a collection of little ornaments, but I always try to make something new for the season.
Love that you made the place settings for the teacher…a perfect example of what you’ve been talking about. They are going to make her table beautiful! Thanks for sharing!

  9. Ms Scrapmess says:

You are so generous and I hope I remember to appreciate my son’s teachers as well as you do when time comes. I had my eye on that maple leaf die earlier, but now I really need to get my hands on it 😀

  10. Sheri Lee says:

I started when I was 10, there were holiday craft books my mom would get every year and I decided to make a big Santa out of corrugated paper. I’ve made homemade Christmas projects ever since. I’m now learning to stamp on cards and other projects. I’ve been progressing over the years and LOVE your site. Thanks!!!

  11. Steffi H. says:

My Mom teached my to make handmade holiday decorations (some of them we made decades ago are still at her annual tree), and I still did. 🙂

  12. Ronna says:

I plan to do my first holiday table decorations this year. I saw the Concord and 9th bough die info on your blog and just couldn’t resist ordering it. Those mini Xmas trees will be so cute at each place setting. Can’t wait to make them and never would have found it f you hadn’t mentioned in your blog – Thlank You!

  13. mroberts3 says:

I made my first one last year – a Thanksgiving shadow box, which is now hanging once again on the wall over the dining table. I made a Halloween banner this year and plan on making some Christmas decorations. Thanks for the inspiration!

  14. Robin in Washington says:

Love how you use the MISTI! Clever. Thanks for the video and the giveaway. I use my MISTI whenever I can. Occasionally I do make handmade decorations, usually for Christmas.

Many of my Christmas decorations are handmade–whether I used paper or wood or flowers or paint.

  20. Amy A. says:

I am swooning over the gorgeous fall colors and your layered bows. When I do have time, and we are hosting holidays, I have made some of our place holder cards for the table – not that we have that many guests, but they are fun to make and make the table setting more festive. I also have a decorative small tree of sorts for each holiday – small enough to sit on a table and I usually have some hand-made ornaments or layered tags on it.

  21. Rosemary says:

I have made many holiday decorations for my home . When my children were in elementary school there was a Christmas Fair every year. My daughter and I would make small decorations to be sold for the children to pick out gifts for their families

I could certainly use a Misti as I am now disabled so it would make card making so much easier

Thank you for all your ideas and tips.

  22. SoniaW says:

Normally I make all the Christmas cards for our family and friends. Also a make for the kids the Advent calendar. This means a lot for the kids and they are always trying to guess which figures will be stamped.
I find a great idea that you’re giving a chance to the Gina K paper. For the copic coloring I have tried the Neenah Solar White Paper but I get better results with the Gina K paper.

  23. Babygirl1 says:

While I have made cards for gifts, Christmas decorations were pinecone wreaths. This was a project my husband and I worked on together.

  24. sharon c says:

Thank you for the double cutting tip. It is great idea for double duty on a die. I have been making Holiday décor for many years wreaths ,wall hangings, napkins, etc, etc. Now I am gifting the “family ‘ items to my sons so that they have décor they have grown up with in their homes.

  25. Monika Reeck says:

I made calendar for the christmas with my son

    Hello Jennifer,
I made placemats which noted the first call for an annual “day of thanksgiving”
in 1619 and I added Psalm 100: 4-5 to be read as the blessing at dinner. Now you’ve
given me inspiration for this year !

  28. Karen V. says:

I can’t imagine any person who crafts would pass up the opportunity to make something for the holidays! Your leaves are great and the tip about double cutting is wonderful. Thanks for a chance to win!

  29. Monique Stevens says:

I love making homemade decorations for my house during the holidays!!!

  30. Jane M says:

I do handmade decorations for Christmas. Lots of cross stitched santas. Needlepoint and cross stitched ornaments for the tree. Thanks for the chance to win a MISTI!!

  31. Jackie Bednar says:

I love making decorations. I’ve been die cutting wide ribbon to try a poinsettia wreath. I also tried die cutting some flowers out of plastic packaging and colored and heat set them to bend the flowers. I tried adding some battery lights but couldn’t get them to stay in. Working on the problem.

  32. Zinag says:

I have in past Holidays made fall leaf coasters, and different handmade objects mostly for Thanksgiving and Christmas, In my younger years we would have the holidays at my home making handmade objects to go with each of the two holidays and to get my (now grown children, and niece’s and nephew) involved was the greatest. Thank you for all you share with us, I truly appreciate what you share.

  33. I love crafting, but I hate cooking. My contribution to our Thanksgiving Day Dinner is fancy place cards…luckily my husband loves to cook (and does a fine job)! Thanks for the chance to win a MISTI – that would be one awesome Christmas present!!

  34. Heather says:

I make favors for wherever we have thanksgiving. Alternating every other year between parents and in laws house. Love making everyone smile.

  35. NancyLynn says:

Hey Jennifer. These are gorgeous place settings and I think they could also be adorable hung on a Christmas Tree. To be completely honest, I have never made handmade decorations before but my son did when he was in kindergarten. The kids in the class took in photos of themselves and framed them and put ribbon on them to hang on the tree – I still have his homemade ornament and he is now 38 years old!

I watched your tutorial on your wood ornaments (which I loved) and am waiting for SSS to get the wood slices back in stock and then I will attempt to make some myself – am super excited, just like “a kid in the candy store” LOL!

Oh, I’ve also been trying to locate wood veneer cardstock but it is very difficult to find (I prefer not to buy the variety pack that you have linked in your video for the paper as I already have the other papers that are included in this pack). I know Altenew just released some birch-type of cardstock that looks beautiful by the way, as well as some dark-grain wood cardstock (also gorgeous) but I was hoping to find it either at SSS (because the shipping is reasonable for Canadians) or an online Canadian craft store, but to no avail. However, I have hopes that craft stores will soon be carrying wood veneer cardstocks as I think it is going to be popular in the future….we can always hope!

Apologies for blabbing on everyone….thanks a heap Jennifer!

  36. Jan Castle says:

Yes, my favorite was a Christmas tree made with whole blown and cleaned egg shells, glued to a styrofoam cone, and decorated with holly in the open spaces between the eggs. It is a STUNNER!
Thanks for a chance (slim tho’ it may be) to win a MISTI!
    Paper Hugs,
    Jan

  37. Denise Ward says:

Yes, I have made handmade ornaments. Doubt any of them have been as lovely as what you’ve made in this video though!! These are fantastic, and the fact they are leaf shaped only adds to their beauty in my eyes! 🙂
Wishing you and the family a blessed Thanksgiving!

  38. Jen says:

This year is going to be my first year decorating for both Christmas and Thanksgiving! I am so excited about all of these adorable ideas!! Thanks so much for sharing. – JEN

  39. Sheri K says:

Yep, I do lots of handmade decorations–I usually make Thanksgiving place settings, I still have last year’s so may re-use–I love the sentiment. It’s a bit sad this year, as my daughter lives in another state, won’t be attending, and we just lost my brother to a brain aneurysm, sudden, unexpected. I have plans to make wood slice ornaments as gifts for the ladies who run our front office at the clinic. I made an advent fabric calender when my kids are little, and usually hang it up somewhere, our 24 year old network engineer( lives at home, saving money) will probably “tend it”, changing the date each day, as he has done for most of his life. The tree is filled with handmade ornaments, from ones my children made when young, to even ones that I made when I was a child. Love handmade decorations.

  40. Darlene says:

Great video. I like your idea of anchoring the stems for bow tying using the magnets 🙂 I have on occasion made small hand made decorations for Thanksgiving.

  41. Fran Hanson says:

Oh my Gosh! I love the misti tool and need to get one. I can never get anything straight so I am so excited about this tool. It’s a bit pricey so I am saving up right now. These placemats are so cute I think I would like to make them for the holidays also. Thanks so much for sharing with us Jennifer. Super love it!

  42. Raisa Pawirotaroeno says:

No, i don’t make hand-made decorations especially for the holidays, because mostly it’s for people i want to show a little kindness to, on any occasion. And this can be on any random day, whenever i feel like; so not necessarily holidays 😀 Thank you for your ideas!

  43. Becky Kinsinger says:

These are gorgeous! I buy plain white napkins from a party store, and always stamp them according to the holiday/celebration. Such fun!

  44. Fran Smith says:

Hi, Jennifer. This Thanksgiving I will 5 of my grandkids at my home. While the adults are cooking and visiting, I will be setting up a crafting station for all kinds of die cuts, stamping & handmade ornaments. I am so excited.

  45. Deirdre H says:

Oh wow Jennifer – Colin’s teacher must be thrilled! They are amazing place settings – love the double die cutting. Thanks for sharing. Thanks also for the chance to win a MISTI! – I try and make some hand made decorations every year – love getting my boys to chart their growth, last year we made snowmen ornaments using their handprints on baubles and gave them to their Grandparents. Always a hit!

  46. Anne Sturgeon says:

These are gorgeous Jennifer. I couldn’t agree with you more. My sister-in-law works with students with special needs and I really like doing things for her. I always tell her she is my HERO! I recently had lunch with some friends and made up some matchboxes covered with pretty paper. Inside I put an after dinner mint (Andres) that were covered in pretty foils for the holidays. You would have thought I paid for their lunches!. I decided to make up a bunch of these to put in a glass bowl for visitors during the holidays. Thanks for sharing this awesome video. To win a MISTI would be just like Christmas morning!!!!

  47. Mona H says:

I am currently making some 12″, 8″, and 6″ poinsettias on my Sizzix Eclips2. My mom requested them for wall decorations at work. These will be my first holiday decorations. Not sure yet what to use for the yellow centers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  48. Jill A says:
