Stripe Inlay + Caring Hearts GIVEAWAY

Welcome! Today I share a stripe inlay technique that is a great way to use up scraps. I also am part of a special blog hop to celebrate an upcoming card drive.

I had so much fun creating these cards! I just grabbed a handful of scraps and went to town.

I started by covering a piece of thin scrap paper with a Stick It Adhesive Sheet. After peeling away the release paper, I added random strips of cardstock that I quickly cut from scraps with my trimmer. I was careful to put them close together for a smooth look.

After my piece was covered with stripes, I pressed them firmly into place with my bone folder. (This is important with the Stick It product.) Next I trimmed my new striped paper pieces down to smaller pieces to add to many cards.

I used both the SugarPea Designs Kindness and Thanks dies to cut from the striped pieces… and also extra die cuts from white cardstock. I adhered the white die cuts into the opening of the stripe pieces, creating a smooth inlay look.

The white heat embossed sentiments are from the SugarPea Designs Kindness Matters and Simon Says Stamp Thanks stamp sets. On a few of the cards, I also use the Lawn Fawn Stitched Borders Dies for some faux stitching on the notecards.

For the next card, I added clear heat embossed sentiments from the SugarPea Designs Caring Hearts set onto the stripes for more interest.

There are so many great ways to use this technique! It is also a wonderful one for mass producing.

CARING HEARTS CARD DRIVE

Very soon I will be sharing information on the upcoming Caring Hearts Card Drive. Each year, I work with Vera Yates (the mastermind behind the card drive) and a team of volunteers to collect and distribute handmade holiday cards to the elderly living in nursing homes. This is our 7th year!

Today we are building up the excitement with a SugarPea Designs Caring Hearts Special Release Blog Hop. SugarPea has designed several stamps and dies for the occasion and will be donating 20% of all proceeds from the sale of Caring Hearts stamp sets & dies to the Alzheimer Association. (You can see all these products in the thumbnails below.)

I hope you will continue on the hop over at the blog of Debby Hughes. She is a gem! Everyone will be using these great SugarPea products.

  1. I have never participated in a card drive, but I do make cards for my dad’s memory care unit. I noticed some residents never got visitors and wanted to brighten their day.

  2. Very nice technique ! Yes I participated in a card drive, the one you have made at the beginning of this year “Lasting Hearts”, and it was a very good feeling to do it ! This is great what Sugar Pea Designs is doing here, it’s a noble deed !

  3. Wow, these are awesome sets. Just Love them all! Thanks for a chance to win. You’re cards are so pretty.

  4. I’ve used a similar technique you showed in your blog but just saved up all of the strips of cardstock that I end up with on various projects. When I get a “critical mass”, I make a few cards that are similar to these. I LOVE the Inlay look and will have to try that. I like the idea of using the adhesive paper too. I just used my tape runner, which worked fine actually. Thanks for the tip about flattening paper after a die leaves marks.
I used to provide cards to Operation Write Home (sadly/happily, it closed down as the need was not there anymore – happily for the families of troops, but sad for my creative outlet). I also worked with a woman who was a Blue Star Mom and sent her many cards for a few years (maybe 1000 or so total?) I LOVE card drives and look forward to your post about them!

  5. I haven’t participated in a card drive before, this is the first time I have heard of it. And the techniques you share are amazing.

  6. I’ve never participated in a card drive but am very excited to do so! I now have somewhere to send all of the cards I make!!!

  7. I LOVE this technique, Jennifer. Thank you so much for sharing it. I don’t know how you come up with so many great ideas! Maybe sometime you could share how you came up with an idea for a particular technique. Just explain your thinking process out loud. I’m certain I’d learn so much, yet again. (This is just a suggestion.)
I have not participated in a card drive. I’m excited to make this one my first since my grandfather died of an Altzheimers-related problem, and he lived in a nursing home for several years. I finally feel as if I now know enough to make something that’s not filled with mistakes. ? Yahoo!!
    Thank you once again!
    Fondly, Cindy

  8. Such a cool way to use your scraps! Yes, I participated several times in the Caring Hearts Drive and also in one for Valentine cards created by Winter Sims. TFS

  9. I’ve never participated in a card drive, but I’ve only been making cards for around a month. This is a great idea! It’s a great way to try out all these wonderful techniques you teach. And giving to a great cause always makes my heart happy!

  10. Love this technique .Thank you for Sharing your time and creative inspirations. I haven’t been doing cards for very long, and i haven’t tried any card drives. But have made cards for my daughters to give away. Love Sugarpea Designs they are so adorable. Thanks Sugarpea for the chance to win!?

  11. I have never participated in a card drive, but I really like the idea of making cards for others and helping out. I am a beginner trying to learn about making cards so it was actually my first time hearing about a card drive. I didn’t know such a thing existed before.

  12. I did participate in a card drive for a little girl on FB that had been burned in a house fire.
Your projects are adorable and would make some great masculine cards!

  13. Love this design. I’m looking forward to showing my niece how to do it. Although I have never been part of a card drive, I love the idea and hope to organise one for our local children’s hospital. Thanks for your inspiration.

  14. I just love your cards. I have never participated in a card drive. Making cards is something I just got into about a year ago when I bought my Cricut machine. I had never heard of using stamps or what heat embossing was until I started watching your videos about 2 weeks ago, but I would love to participate in one!!

  15. It’s always good to keep those offcuts, and you have such amazing ideas for using them. I am not sure if we have a version of a card drive in the UK but is something I am definitely going to look into. Some of my crafty friends on a forum I joined tend to make cards and give them to charities to sell. x

  16. I have soooooo many scraps; always excited about ways to use them. You always use the prettiest color combinations too!! I have not participated in a card drive as of yet but definitely would like to in the near future.

  17. Jennifer–these cards are so beautiful! I’m trying to catch up on all of my email and was able to enter this contest just in time! What a wonderful project–I will be happy to make some cards for the patients in nursing homes. Years ago, my husband used to work with nursing homes through the pharmacy where he worked. On Mother’s Day, we would take our children to the nursing homes and deliver flowers to all of the women. You cannot believe how much such a little thing meant to so many of the residents. Many of the folks in nursing homes have no family to visit so anything we can do to let them know they are not forgotten is wonderful!

  18. I haven’t participated in a card drive, but I did used to send cards to Operation Write Home. I miss them!

  19. I have participated in many card drives including Caring Hearts! I love that my creations might help someone in need.
