The holidays are approaching and I give a lot of gift cards as gifts. However, I like to present them in ways that are a fun, thoughtful, and different.

And isn’t this My Favorite Things Hot Cocoa Cups die set so fun? After using it to cut from cardstock, I applied color to the edges with a coordinating color of Distress Ink. I think it makes a big difference to add ink to the edges. However, for white die cuts (like the whip cream) I add a light gray Copic Marker (C0 or C00) to the edges. I also die cut a white square from the My Favorite Things Pierced Square die set and stamped a sentiment from the Toasty Greetings stamp set using black ink. After adhering the die cuts to the white square, I applied three strips of foam tape to the back, creating a pocket for the gift card to slip into.

I finished the card off by adhering some die cut marshmallows on top of the whip cream and adding Distress Stickles on top to resemble sugar. For the background, I used a We R Memory Keepers Next Level Embossing Folder with some Hero Arts kraft cardstock. I like to lightly swipe white pigment ink over the raised areas of embossed backgrounds to create highlights and intensify the dimension.

You could combine any die cuts together and form a pocket behind it to create a gift card holder. Great for the holidays!

CHALLENGE UPDATE

I plan to give this card to my mail lady as part of the Share Handmade Kindness Challenge. This week focuses on sharing kindness to those who work/serve in the community and I thought this card would be perfect for that. It’s a great way to show some appreciation.

I love giving gift cards With a homemade card it is an excellent way to both give someone something that is homemade and a choice to buy something he or she likes.

  4. Katie says:

Love Love Love this idea! I do some gift cards to teachers and friends but try to avoid them for family.

  5. Laura Smith says:

I definitely give gift cards. It’s a great way to make sure someone gets the exact, perfect thing as a gift because they can choose it themselves. I think teens and kids in their 20’s really appreciate them. Maybe I am biased because I love to receive gift cards myself!

  6. Mary says:

  7. jengd says:

Cute card! I used to avoid gift cards but as I’ve gotten older, I’ve found how much I appreciate them both for giving and receiving. I still prefer giving other more personal gifts but sometimes, gift cards are sometimes the best answer.

  13. Pai Meng says:

such cute holder! I try not to give gifts cards since i feel they are a little impersonal but with time getting ever shorter it seems I am slowly caving!

  14. hippymom83 says:

Super cute card! I occasionally give gift cards for the hard-to-shop-for people in my life, but I much prefer being able to pick out a personalized gift. Or better yet, making homemade gifts! 🙂

  15. nailgirl65 says:

Love the gift card holder! I personally think gift cards are a great idea. I know that I love to receive them!! Thanks for sharing this fun way to add a little bit of extra “love” to the gift card!!

  16. Varada says:

I mainly give gift cards when I don’t know the person well enough or I don’t know what they would like. So I usually choose like a Visa gift card that can be used in many different stores. And even then I like to dress them up with something handmade 🙂

  17. Rufus says:

Adorable! In the past I’ve always avoided gift cards, but this may be the year that I change that prejudice…have no good ideas at all this year. So rather than give something I’m not at all sure they’ll like, want or care for…gift cards it may be! At least I’ll know how to make a really cute holder.

  18. Victoria Murray says:

Love giving gift cards for teachers and our crossing guard every Christmas.
    Great video!

  19. Debbie Eslinger says:

  20. Sherry S says:

As a general rule I stay away from gift cards. Just give money beings I don’t have to mail the holders.

  21. Sherisse says:

I like giving gift cards simply because I feel really indecisive and unsure of what to purchase for someone and I like that the receiver can have a choice to purchase whatever they want or to pass it along!:)

  22. Liz O. says:

Fabulous idea as always Jennifer! I do give away Gift cards especially when I don’t know the person all to well and when last minute gifts are needed, I keep a stash of diverse restaurants and local shops GC around just in case. Love MFT!!! Have a most wonderful day and thank you very much for all you do and share with us!

  23. Stephanie says:

What an adorable gift card holder!

Yes, we most definitely give gift cards. Now that our kids are older, we have found they really appreciate being able to go and shop for their own items.

I still buy them each certain items, but we provide them with gift cards to their favorite retailers and/or for experiences (or preferred gift!), as well as a few cards for special treats (coffee from Starbuck’s, gas at their local station, a movie, etc.).

Now you’ve inspired me to create some fun and unique holders for their cards!

    Steph

  24. MarilizeK says:

What a great idea! We do giftcards a lot over the festive season and I love using diecuts as pockets 🙂 Thanks for also showing me the embossing folder tricks – was one of those white elephant craft stash things in the corner – will now be put to better use!

  25. Christy Q says:

What a great packaging idea! Love this integrated idea – so much fancier than sticking a gift card in an card. I do gift cards because the recipient gets to pick out what they want and I don’t have to stress (or spend a lot of time) thinking about what to get from a particular store.

  26. tla says:

Oh yes we give gift cards & I love your beautiful gift card holder, love those hearts!!

  27. Shannon says:

Occasionally I’ll mix a gift card in with a gift. I usually try to put more thought into gifts but when I get overloaded I try to simplify things with an added gift card. Thanks for sharing.

  28. Sandra Bannert says:

I don’t like giving gift cards.. it’s better than just money, but I prefer real presents. But if I need to give a gift card.. I’ll make a gift card holder like this, definitely!

  29. Lori B says:

Great video! I have wondered about those embossing folders-how they were different-now I know. thanks for that. Your gift card holder so cute with those two mugs! I have a love/hate relationship with gift cards-I try to only use them when I have NO idea what else to get someone!

  30. Jeannine H says:

I have made a card to send with a Starbucks giftcard to my daughter’s friend and her mother who went out of their to get something that my daughter had forgotten to move after a work term in another city. Not a community service but a great service to our family.

  31. D.Ann C says:

What a terrific idea – thanks for the inspiration! Yes, when I get enough points on my credit card to cash in for gift cards, I use them as gifts. I have only made one gift card holder card so far, tho. Going to try this next!!

  32. tina says:

I do give gift cards. I always present it in a homemade card. Try to stay with the theme of the gift card.

  33. Suzan VonEssen says:

I love giving gift cards because it gives me the opportunity to make a card to hold it! This one is awesome!!

  34. LisaT says:

I do give gift cards, but I always feel slightly guilty about it. I like to buy presents more for people, but giftcards can work really well for teenage boys for instance – they love an Itunes or Starbucks giftcard :)!

  35. Cora says:

I try buy people a personal gift, but sometimes I use a giftcard when a nice present is too expensive or whem I don’t know people well enough to buy a personal gift.

  36. I have mixed feelings about gift cards. I’ve received some for stores where I don’t shop, and they’ve actually expired on me! But, I do love to receive them when they’re for my favorite stores, or Visa cards that I can use for my online shopping! I think they can be rather impersonal, but I do think they’re perfect as gifts for people in our community, nieces & nephews, etc. I also like to make cool little gift holders for them to make them even better to receive!

  37. Anastasia says:

I prefer to buy gifts especially when I know what the recipient wants. Gift cards would be a second option.

  38. Manda says:

I prefer to pick out gifts, but sometimes I have to resort to giving a gift card.

  39. Karen H says:

I am a big fan of giving gift cards and of your videos.

  40. tyoocat says:

Awesome gift card holder card! I like to give a gift card instead of a gift, so that the person can choose what she(he) wants, especially if I don’t know the person well enough.

  41. mroberts3 says:

I give a gift card every year to my paper delivery woman – it’s always a coffee card, so today’s project is perfect! Thanks for the inspiration!

  42. Monika Reeck says:

I never made gift card holder
    and never send it
    I will try to make
maybe I will send to ladies in Germany
cause send to USA it needs much shipping costs
thanks for the chance to win dear Jennifer
    hugs
    Monika

  43. Linda E says:

As my grandchidren get older, it’s much easier (and more appreciated by them) for me to give gift cards! I know how much I love receiving gift certificates to my favorite online stamping sites, so I don’t think it’s a cop-out!

  44. Kathy P says:

So many of my friends would be thrilled to get this cute card in their mailbox!
I do give gift cards every year….as I have gotten older, I found that I often did not use gifts given to me, and that I would much prefer a gift card. So I usually give gift cards to all but closest friends, whom I usually know well enough to know what they would love to receive!

  45. This is gorgeous…I love the color combo also. I give gift cards because I love to receive them. Who doesn’t like to do a little shopping on someone else’s dime??

  46. Kona Rose says:

What a super sweet card design. You’re right – adding color to the edges DO pop the die cuts! I tend to send PayPal cash as gifts. That way the recipient can spend it anywhere they wish.

  47. Cindy Aguirre says:

Yes. I give gift cards. They are great for people you don’t know exactly what they may want. 🙂

  48. Maureen Chandler says:

We give gift cards occasionally and often get some ourselves for Christmas! I make or buy handmade gifts for Christmas for our kids and then also give them $$. This is a very clever card holder for a gift card and I may do something like that for the $$. Thanks so much!

  49. Laraine R says:

Awesome card! I give a bunch of gift cards during the holidays! So much easier for me.

  50. Andrea Frotten says:

I love your videos! I just hate when I go to buy the item on Simon Says Stamps and it’s sold out. Same on the other sites (the die cut for this). I am having them notify me though when it comes in. I do love to give gift cards to my ‘Holiday Honey’ contest person at work (school) and to the nurses that share my offices with me. I work at two elementary schools each day. These stamps and dies would be perfect

    1. They have been on reorder by the stores for awhile now. Just waiting for manufacturers to get more.
