The holidays are approaching and I give a lot of gift cards as gifts. However, I like to present them in ways that are a fun, thoughtful, and different.

And isn’t this My Favorite Things Hot Cocoa Cups die set so fun? After using it to cut from cardstock, I applied color to the edges with a coordinating color of Distress Ink. I think it makes a big difference to add ink to the edges. However, for white die cuts (like the whip cream) I add a light gray Copic Marker (C0 or C00) to the edges. I also die cut a white square from the My Favorite Things Pierced Square die set and stamped a sentiment from the Toasty Greetings stamp set using black ink. After adhering the die cuts to the white square, I applied three strips of foam tape to the back, creating a pocket for the gift card to slip into.

I finished the card off by adhering some die cut marshmallows on top of the whip cream and adding Distress Stickles on top to resemble sugar. For the background, I used a We R Memory Keepers Next Level Embossing Folder with some Hero Arts kraft cardstock. I like to lightly swipe white pigment ink over the raised areas of embossed backgrounds to create highlights and intensify the dimension.

You could combine any die cuts together and form a pocket behind it to create a gift card holder. Great for the holidays!

CHALLENGE UPDATE

I plan to give this card to my mail lady as part of the Share Handmade Kindness Challenge. This week focuses on sharing kindness to those who work/serve in the community and I thought this card would be perfect for that. It’s a great way to show some appreciation.

  2. Emily W. says:

I try to avoid gift cards if I can, but sometimes they are the best gift I can think of for someone. (I don’t know a whole lot about some coworkers, but I know the ones that go for coffee every day can definitely use the coffee shop card!) And they’re definitely easier to mail!

  3. Jessica Stull says:

I like to give gift cards. Maybe because I like getting them.

  4. Ginger G. says:

I prefer not to give gift cards – I like to do something a little more personal but I sure do love receiving them!

  6. Royleea love says:

Gift cards are the. Best and these days you can get a gift card to everywhere in any place, so I am totally down for that and I love new and creative ways to give the gift cards so this design is awesome and I cannot wait to try it thanks Jennifer you’re the best

  7. Gift cards are a great thank you. I use them as recognition in my job. I don’t usually give them as gifts.

  8. Donna says:

I do use them and I don’t think that the recipients have ever minded them! 🙂

  9. Teresa A says:

I like gift cards as a gift, so I do give them to my friends especially those that live out of town. That is easier and less expensive than mailing heavy gifts.

  10. Diane M says:

TO gift or not that is the question! I personally LOVE picking out something I REALLY want instead of something that someone else decided I would like–which I usually don’t! Only drawback is being careful which cards you give so the recipient isn’t penalized.

  11. Torrie says:

I do like to choose a gift for each person, but sometimes a gift card just makes sense. I think a cute card with a holder like this makes it more personal and totally giftable.

  12. I’m working in the rural areas conducting Sunday Schools. Most of them are poor and don’t know what a gift card is. So, as soon as I receive my payment I spend a few bucks for the children buying them some stationary and treats. Thank you so much for the giveaway, Jennifer <3

  13. Sue Fisher says:

I love the trick with Distress Ink for adding visual dimension. 🙂

And yes, I do give gift cards! They’re so much better than spending a bundle on something the recipient might find less useful — I’ve been the recipient of way too many of those!

  14. Mendi Yoshikawa says:

Sooo cute! Love that quilted embossing folder and all your sweet details like the distress stickles on the marshmallows! Such a darling card! 🙂

  15. Ellen S says:

Jennifer, this is an adorable card! And yes I like to give and receive gift cards. I especially like gift cards for my nieces and nephews who are teenagers and live miles and miles away.

  16. Oksana Jatskovski says:

We, me and my husband, always buy gift cards for ppl. I think the person can then buy whatever they really want or need, and dont have to deal with an unwanted present. Yay for gift cards:-)! Thank you so much for the idea of making a card and a gift card holder all in one! I will definitely try to make some soon!

  17. Lilian says:

I try to avoid them, but sometimes a gift card is easier!

  19. Mariana says:

I love both giving and receiving gift cards. I think they are thoughtful and appreciated. Thanks for asking. I plan on using your card idea – well some version of it – this Christmas.

  20. Debbie says:

I don’t tend to give gift cards for close family and friends, I prefer a more personal gift but they are great for people whose taste I don’t know that well. Love this card 🙂

  21. Maria says:

I try to avoid gift cards for the most part. I like to give personal gifts, something I know the recipient will enjoy. I have given gift cards occasionally, but mostly I prefer giving hand picked (or hand made), thought out, gifts.

  22. Kat says:

I love giving gift cards because I am not good at choosing gift. I normally make my own gift card holder too.

  23. Jean Denney says:

I love giving gift cards throughout the year as a little pick me up to the receiver. Love being able to give them in cute handmade cards.

  24. Anastasia says:

Gift cards are always a good last resort, especially when I’m time poor or really out of ideas. I just hate that they have expiry dates!

  25. Oreet says:

Love gift cards and your card!

  26. upnseams says:

The card is so cute and my favorite gift card to big is the places like Home Depot and Lowe’s which is what is in our area. I find ppl on my gift list like those types so much more than others. And lets face it who does not like going shopping in places like that.

  27. Gina says:

I love giving gift cards. Maybe because I like getting them?!

  28. Dr Sonia S V says:

What a cool creation. In India the gift card trend has not really caught on …we have a tendency to gift sweets or even cash!

  29. Barbara Lambing says:

I am also a gift card advocate! It is SO much fun to “spend” them getting something meaningful that I know is from a friend or family member–figure if I love getting them, others do too!

  30. Erin says:

I only give gift cards to my teenage niece and nephews because that is what they really want. Usually itunes, xbox or amazon to go with the latest device that Santa has brought them.

  31. I love sending gift cards and I always create a fun gift card holder as you did. The cups of cocoa are so adorable.

  32. Karen Martens says:

I love the card holder. What a great idea. My die collection is rather small, but over time I should build it up. Thanks.

  33. Such a cute card!! Thank you for the new tip on the gift card holder.
I love to send gift cards and I am always looking for new ways to make the cards. Especially since my mom comes to me during the holidays and asks me for a lot of gift card holder cards!

  34. This is such a sweet card! I love giving gift cards and I think people love receiving them. Thanks for the ideas!

  35. I usually only give gift card to people that are never happy with what I used to get for them… I love buying presents but I give up and give them gift cards after a while.
Thanks for the chance to win!

  36. Grace Li says:

Before I usually give gift cards to people who I thanks for, Now I will give gift cards AND homemade thank you cards togather.

  37. Rebecca B. from FL says:

I try to avoid giving them but I LOVE LOVE LOVE to receive gift cards!!!

  38. Lianna P. says:

This card is so cute! I give gifts cards in two situations– one is when I need a more generic gift for an exchange, or for someone I don’t know well (coffee gift cards are usually a good idea), and the other situation is when I am shopping for a friend who loves gift cards. I used to think gift cards were impersonal, but there is something to be said for knowing your friends’ favourite stores or remembering that they are coveting a specific item and giving them some extra cash to buy it.

  39. Sheri K says:

This card is adorable–love it! Your mail lady will love it too. Yes, I do use gift cards, in fact it is what I give my elderly parents for all occasions. I have learned from the past, whatever gift I give them it gets returned, for some reason or another. Unless it is something very specific that they want and need. My Dad has celiac disease, as I do, so I make sure the restaurant gift cards are for restaurants that are safe for those of us who have food allergies. I always give the office staff at my clinic Starbucks cards for Christmas and a handmade ornament or decorations, thanks to your inspiration, I’m planning to make them wood ornament slices, found some lovely slices at the craft store. Thanks for a chance to win some awesome goodies.

  40. Mary P says:

I prefer not to give gift cards but I do in certain cases. For example, if the person is far away, I might send a gift card now and then (more often I order something online and have it shipped to them), or if the person really likes a certain store and I don’t know what they already own, I might send a gift card (e.g. craft store!). Love your cute little hot chocolates!

  41. Noreen says:

Rather than use gift cards, I find cute ways to gift cash because cash can be used anywhere. The few gift cards I do use are to places like Amazon or Walmart where they don’t expire and recipients can use them to the last penny.

  42. Nathalie P says:

I do give gift cards to specific people who request them. For instance my oldest daughter requests them when she wishes for something expensive and that she does not want only one person buying it. Right now she is asking everyone in our family to give her Amazon gift cards to buy herself another external hard drive. I love making card holders and surprise cards using Julie Ebersole’s die for the surprise card.

  43. Marty says:

Fantastic idea, darling card & really am enjoying this challenge!

  44. Anne says:

I LOVE your card and the quilted background really sets it off, giving it a warm, cosy feel. We don’t buy gifts nowadays because we are unemployed. However when there is a call for a card, God always seems to provide the means to send it and the card becomes the gift of blessing, especially with a Biblical verse! Do you make scripture cards? It would be lovely to see some ideas!

  45. Michelle N says:

I give gift cards when I know the recipient would rather pick what they prefer and do their own shopping or when the recipient is more of an acquaintance. Or if the recipient is a huge fan of starbucks and drinks coffee every day.

  46. Mopheaded1 says:

I love giving gift cards! I think it allows the receiver a choice in what they would like to purchase. Your sharing idea is fantastic! I love the gift card holder! Your mail lady will smile all week!

  47. Charlene M. says:

I’m not a big fan of giving gift cards as they seem too impersonal to me, but I do give them when they are requested.

  48. Lizzystitch says:

While gift cards may seem a bit impersonal, I think they are nice to give to someone who has everything, especially people who nearly always return / exchange what you give them as an actual present to open! There are people in our family who ALWAYS return/exchange a gift, and yet, if I give them a gift card, they think I am snubbing them! It’s such a conundrum! So, for those people, we like to give them movie tickets, or tickets to one of Christian theatre houses near us that does live plays, …..something they can go to enjoy. Tickets seem to go over well. Having said all of that, I still prefer to give a thoughtful gift, especially one that is handmade. I like to sew and quilt, so a set of handmade napkins, a pieced and quilted table runner, a set of notecards I have made and personalized for them. A Yankee Candle always goes over well, as does some shower soap by Philosophy. As for the men, they can never have enough tools! So….Sears / Craftsman gets a lot of business from me! There’s nothing like opening a thoughtful gift from someone who loves you and cares about you, whether it’s a gift card, certificate, or a wrapped and bowed present! Merry Christmas to all!

  49. Megan says:

Love all of the texture in this one! I’m OK with giving a giftcard. I’d rather the person be able to shop for what they really want rather than me picking something they don’t love.

  50. Maxine says:

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE gift cards…guess that means I use them a lot. lol
