Video: Ink Organization + Storage + DISCOUNT CODES + GIVEAWAY

Hi there. Today’s video is an update on my ink organization and storage.

I’ve shared many ink videos in the past, but I’ve added a few things to my system and wanted to share.

COLOR CODING

First, let’s talk about color identification. There are a few things I found helpful:

  • Ink Swatch Book – I find this essential when creating. It saves me so much time in matching inks and creating color combos. I have a free download of the swatches HERE, along with a video on how to create your own.
  • Brother Label Maker – I print out a label for each side of my ink pads. I like that the labels are durable and hold up nicely over time. (Many of the ones you print on your computer get messy quickly and fall off.)
  • Ink Dots – This is something I’ve recently started doing and I really find it helpful to see the true color of the ink pad at first glance. I stamp the color on top of two dots sandwiched together and adhere it next to the label. I encourage you to get your kids involved in helping. (A big shout out to Colin and my friend/right-hand-stamper Heather for helping me create all these dots!)

Note: I don’t think it is necessary to do all three of the systems above. It just depends on how many inks you have, how you work, etc. Maybe one would do the trick for you. I find all three helpful since I have a lot of inks for my job. (By the way, it is completely unnecessary to own as many inks as I do. This is my job and that is the only reason I have so many. Inks are like shoes – we all need and want something different, so you just need to pick what suites you. I show lots of inks in my videos to help you pick.)

INK STORAGE

I have a few ways I store my inks:

  • Organize More – I am a huge fan of Organize More… both the people and the products. I have several of their ink units in my craft room and cannot recommend them enough. They are amazing. You can get a closer look at these storage units in THIS video.

The kind people at Organize More are offering a 10% off code for my readers. Just use the code “MCGUIRE715” now thru 7/25/15. (And see below for a big giveaway!)

  • Stampin’ Up Ink Caddy – This option is great if you have a small desktop space for ink storage. I’ve placed a couple of these in a deep cabinet and have been happy with them. I like that each unit holds 48 ink pads and swivels for easy access. There is also a storage area on top to hold re-inkers.

If you’d like to get one of these caddies, just click HERE to shop with my friend Lydia Fiedler. If you use hostess code FEBAUNEW (enter this after clicking to view your shopping bag) you will go into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to her store. Lydia is awesome. If there was a unicorn made out of glitter it couldn’t be more awesome than she is. 😉

Here is one of my Organize More units. It is just a thing of beauty…

And here is a look at how the inks fit into the Stampin’ Up Caddy. I do like how this baby spins around easily…

My inks are storaged in a shelf I made from foam core.

  2. Melissa B. says:

I store my SU! Inks in a wooden ink storage box, my memento inks in my SU! Storage caddy and my distress inks in a plastic stacking container.

  3. Lisa K says:

I have some of my inks stored in a rotating caddy similar to the Stampin Up caddy. The Organize More 60 ink storage box has been on my wish list for a long time. I have a perfect place to hang it on the wall. Someday it will be mine. Then I’ll have to find a place for a second one since I know it will fill up fast. Ha.

  4. Stephanie R says:

I have all of my inkpads piled up on top of my shelf so my little ones can’t reach them, lol!
I’m definitely going to use your organization system.

  5. I store my inks in the plastic sandwich box:) I do not have them a lot… 🙁

  6. Carmen L says:

A scrapbook store recently closed in my area and I was able to get an ink pad storage unit for $5! However, it has filled up pretty quick so I put my distress inks in my IKEA Alex unit. The organize more unit looks awesome! Thank you for another great organizational video!

  7. Donna says:

I have mine on the wall behind my desk in wire shelves and also containers I bought in the container store for the smaller distress and momento inks. They fit perfectly inside these I’m not sure what you would call them. I would love to take a look at the one’s from Stampin Up, they look like they would fit in somewhere alone the side of my desk…I always love your ideas for storage…I did all my stamps and dies…that’s working out great!

  8. Carol Perry says:

I have mine in plastic rectangular containers in my Ikea Alex drawers. It’s such a pain looking for one color and these organize more units are beautiful. Would love to have them on my desk for easy access. Great info and thanks for sharing.

  9. Ginny L. says:

I use a small wooden crate that was used for CD storage. For my mini pads I use Tim Holtz tins. They never are as neat as yours look. I really need to get a system going!

  10. Dixie C. says:

Storing inks is tricky for me. I have the SU! inks on a narrow shelf that stacks about 5 high and 6 wide. My Distress Inks (which are most used) are in one of those IRIS cases…which I did because I was toting them back and forth to class…but I have run out of room, and have to dig for them. I need a new solution for those inks. I need to reorganize everything…EXCEPT my stamps. I LOVE your system of clear pocket folders and Binz containers. What a miracle that has been in my craft room!

  11. jengd says:

I keep my SU, Tsukineko and Momento inks in an old wooden cassette case. My distress inks are in a plastic storage box. My ink spots and metallic inks sit on top of the cassette case since they don’t fit in it well. I’d love to get them all in one spot!

  12. Susan Reiser says:

love you videos and watch them often, thanks for dpsharing all your great tips,
I bought 3 old tape holders on eBay and they fit the stamps perfectly. I label them as you do with my faithful Brother mschine, have gphad it for years!

So basically ,got the old tape holder, one even had a grateful dead sticker on it and use it for distress inks, regular inks etc.
    they fill up fat!

  13. Kayleen Kamikawa says:

Stacked on top of each other? not a great system

  14. Sarah J S says:

Thanks for the new tip for the coloured spots, another great idea. I have used your coin pocket idea, but I also stamp on the back with the colour right on the edge and also with a fine patterned stamp to see the detail the ink produces. I have found this very useful. I store some of my inks in a custom built unit made by Col Craft in Australia.

  15. Marilyn C. Lojek says:

I followed some of your suggestions for storage. I have an Organize More 60 pad holder and I labeled them with my Brother. I also have some stored in shallow drawers in a rolling cart. Love your ideas.

  16. Myra says:

I just stack my inks for now, but I really need a better storage solution!

  17. Ann Keever says:

I have watch all of your videos on organization. I am going to start organizing my inks using the Stampin’ Up containers.

  18. Lauren E. says:

I have a drawer I stack my distress inks in and I use an Amazon box for all of my Hero Arts ink. I definitely need a new way to store my inks! Thanks for your video.

  19. angela says:

thank you so much for you organizing tips they are very helpful 🙂

  20. I store my inks sideways, labeled in a jewelry armoire. My husband saw this in our alley. I don’t own a lot of jewelry so I converted it and made it a part of my craft room.

  21. Kathy says:

Thanks for all your organizing tips and suggestions! Causes a lot of daydreaming, but that’s not such a bad thing 😉
I have stored my ink pads in drawers, on shelves, and just recently saw that it was possible to repurpose a wooden cassette tape storage unit. It was inexpensive, through a website called that supplies merchandise/equipment for churches…. but I secretly drool over the more ink-pad specific organizers. LOL

  22. Gwen says:

I don’t have many in pads, so I use plastic box picture frames. I take out the cardboard insert and am left with what looks like a tray which I can stack on a shelf.

  23. Bevyb says:

Thanks for the tips on storing inks..I’m always on the hunt for new ideas. Right now I’m using a rolling craft drawers that I picked up at michaels last year

  24. Ginger G says:

I use Art Bins and craft carts to store my inks, but I love the Stampin’ Up spinning organizers! I am also glad to know about the “Organize More” store and am excited to check out their stuff! Thanks for another great video!

  25. Sallyann (Make Mine Green) says:

I love to organize too so I really appreciate all you tips in this area. Since my goal is to have everything I regularly use within reach of my craft “on deck area” I’ve put my ink pads in plastic cases labeled by brand and type which then stack up in a column specifically for inks under my desk. This has worked pretty well for about half a year but I’m feeling like it’s time for another re-do of the whole craft/office area once summer is over. Two of my four stacked columns under my desk I find I use very seldom (punches and wooden stamps) so it’s time for move them and make room for things more regularly used. It’s a work always in progress….

  26. Heather Lynn says:

    Hi Jennifer,

I love color and inks, but I can actually fit them in a plastic container. I don’t like having so many different brands. I started out with Stampin Up but am going to invest in SSS and Hero Arts Shadow Inks. I’m starting to organize my craft room. My wonderful husband set it up for me. So thankful!!

  27. Getting organized never ends

  28. Heather Loughlin says:

Jennifer, I’m smack dab in the middle of a major organization overhaul, because I’m trying to make room for all the new inks I’ve been adding to my collection. First My Favorite Things expanded their line, then Tim Holtz, & now Simon Says Stamp… I’m not complaining, quite the opposite really (I simply LOVE color, the more the better), I’m just running out of room! I was planning on ordering these organizers for some time now. Currently, I am storing my inks in Isis plastic rolling carts with drawers.
Sadly, my precious Little Lhasa Apso, Hailey, just passed away over the weekend, after giving us 17 years of unconditional love & immeasurable joy. I am so overwhelmed with grief at the moment, I can’t imagine getting any further gratification from continuing with my project… even though I enjoy it, & find de-cluttering to be cathartic & provide temporary relief from stress. Eventually, I shall resume out of necessity (I need to keep my mind & hands busy). :'( <\3

  29. Loly Borda says:

Love your organizing tips! Thanks for the chance!

  30. Lisa says:

Currently using a bin from the Container Store, for the 60 or so inks that I bring on my road trips. Can’t wait to get back home soon and organize a new craft room! 🙂

  31. Veronica Santos says:

For now, I just stack my inks but crazy about finding a solution that will attend my needs.

  32. Jody Knapp says:

I don’t have a storage solution and desperately need one! I love the idea of drawers or a spinning cady. I love your videos, thank you for all the great ideas!

  33. Sarah says:

I don’t have the ideal storage – I keep my inks on their side in a drawer at my desk. Some are labeled and some aren’t, but I love colour and trying different inks. I really appreciate your organization tips and videos.

  34. Sundy says:

I currently have my inks in just a drawer. I love your idea of putting an ink dot on the side.

  35. MsScrapmess says:

I love your organization tips! Thank you for sharing 🙂 Would it be terrible much work for you to put out a blogpost where one can see all your inkswatches up to date? I would love to have your job and play with all those inks, but as I have a limited budget it would be great to see which colors are similar and not among all the manufactors. Again, I can see if you are very busy, that it would be a lot of work. Thanks again for all that you do!!!

  36. Cindy Brooks says:

I have my inks in a Stampin’ Up caddy and in an old cassette tape box. But I need some more storage!

  37. bette says:

Love the storage unit video. You are well organized and I was happy to bookmark the ones for future reference for when I have a stamp room. ThAnK yOu!

  38. Adoree says:

Most of my inkpads are stored in old cassettes racks (2) that my husband mounted on one of my walls in my craftroom…..it fits!

  39. I have a wooden holder for my distress inks but my other full sized inks are piled on shelves or on my desk and also on top of the distress ink rack – I need more storage! My cube inks are in clear boxes that had chocolates in! Thank you for the chance to win! xxx

  40. Sandy anderson says:

I store my inks in a homemade unit I made out of foam core. All I did was cut the strips & hot glued it together. I also made a little swatch book, the idea I got from you. Thanks for all your great ideas. I have learned a lot from you.

  41. Tonya Denton says:

Love, love, love your organization videos!! I have the Stampin’ Up Ink Caddy which I keep my current inks stored (I’m a SU Demo) but I really do need another way to store my other retired inks and my Distress Inks. I’m certainly going to do more research on the Organize More Unit! Thank you for another great organizational video! 🙂

  42. Diane says:

Thanks for sharing your ink organization tips and for the chance to win such a great prize.

  43. Thanks for sharing your amazing system. Since I don’t have that many inks, I can get away with storing them in a drawer in my IKEA art caddy, but I might be on the verge of out growing it. Thanks for the opportunity to get more organized.

  44. Lauren M. says:

LOVE your organization videos!! Thank you SO MUCH for a chance to win a gift certificate to Organize More! Right now I store my inks stacked up in a cubbie, but they always fall over when I try to grab one that’s in the middle. I would LOVE to get the ink storage pieces you have!!!! 🙂

  45. Laura L says:

I currently store my inks on CD/DVD holders attached to the wall (got them at office max). But i must say your color swatch book has helped me out a lot when trying to figure out which inks to use on a project.

  46. Cassandra Love says:

Currently, my inks are stored in my Recollection three-drawer cube from Michaels . I have them upside down. I like your system better. LOL!

  47. Mindy says:

I store my inks in 2 drawers of my IKEA Alex cart. They used to be scattered in several places so it’s nice to have them together. I can’t even begin to tell you how much I LOVE your organization videos! Thank you!!

  48. Dawn B. says:

I really need a better solution and I keep looking at the Organize More unit but just haven’t jumped in yet.

  49. Kim Potts says:

Jennifer, I always love your organization videos. TFS! Now I need to go watch your original ink storage video. I may have missed that one, not sure. LOL!

  50. Paula Fuller says:

I have 2 Stampin’ Up caddies for ink storage and a similar Organize More ink storage unit made out of wood. I also keep small ink cubes in clear plastic boxes that are easy to see. I definitely like the Organize More storage products, and the prices are much more reasonable then the price I paid for my storage units. Would love to win a gift certificate from that company.
