Video: Ink Organization + Storage + DISCOUNT CODES + GIVEAWAY

Hi there. Today’s video is an update on my ink organization and storage.

I’ve shared many ink videos in the past, but I’ve added a few things to my system and wanted to share.

COLOR CODING

First, let’s talk about color identification. There are a few things I found helpful:

  • Ink Swatch Book – I find this essential when creating. It saves me so much time in matching inks and creating color combos. I have a free download of the swatches HERE, along with a video on how to create your own.
  • Brother Label Maker – I print out a label for each side of my ink pads. I like that the labels are durable and hold up nicely over time. (Many of the ones you print on your computer get messy quickly and fall off.)
  • Ink Dots – This is something I’ve recently started doing and I really find it helpful to see the true color of the ink pad at first glance. I stamp the color on top of two dots sandwiched together and adhere it next to the label. I encourage you to get your kids involved in helping. (A big shout out to Colin and my friend/right-hand-stamper Heather for helping me create all these dots!)

Note: I don’t think it is necessary to do all three of the systems above. It just depends on how many inks you have, how you work, etc. Maybe one would do the trick for you. I find all three helpful since I have a lot of inks for my job. (By the way, it is completely unnecessary to own as many inks as I do. This is my job and that is the only reason I have so many. Inks are like shoes – we all need and want something different, so you just need to pick what suites you. I show lots of inks in my videos to help you pick.)

INK STORAGE

I have a few ways I store my inks:

  • Organize More – I am a huge fan of Organize More… both the people and the products. I have several of their ink units in my craft room and cannot recommend them enough. They are amazing. You can get a closer look at these storage units in THIS video.

The kind people at Organize More are offering a 10% off code for my readers. Just use the code “MCGUIRE715” now thru 7/25/15. (And see below for a big giveaway!)

  • Stampin’ Up Ink Caddy – This option is great if you have a small desktop space for ink storage. I’ve placed a couple of these in a deep cabinet and have been happy with them. I like that each unit holds 48 ink pads and swivels for easy access. There is also a storage area on top to hold re-inkers.

If you’d like to get one of these caddies, just click HERE to shop with my friend Lydia Fiedler. If you use hostess code FEBAUNEW (enter this after clicking to view your shopping bag) you will go into a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to her store. Lydia is awesome. If there was a unicorn made out of glitter it couldn’t be more awesome than she is. 😉

Here is one of my Organize More units. It is just a thing of beauty…

And here is a look at how the inks fit into the Stampin’ Up Caddy. I do like how this baby spins around easily…

I was very lucky to find a swivel stand with shallow shelves on all four sides at a “Closing Business” Sale! It holds a hundred plus ink pads. The top is open with a trim so that reinkers can stand safely even when spun around. I’m not sure what the paper store used this 3 foot high stand for, but it sure holds a lot of my older inks…The Distress inks have a shelf unit on my desk as do some of my most used “new inks”. I do like the looks of the units you use and I might buy one of these to sit on the desk with my new inks..I’m sure it would fit and would look Pretty good!!! I’m with you …organize, organize, best way to work!! I am lucky to have a special craft room with considerable space…but I’ve been stamping since 1984 and I have every stamp I ever bought and that is ton!!!

  2. My inks are in a scrapbook paper plastic container and desperately need a new home!

  3. Nickie Madden says:

I have a plastic refrigerator storage container with shelves. I am looking for something else because I outgrew this. Would love to win the gift card, it’s a perfect answer for me.
Thanks for all you do for us.

  4. Mariana says:

I use a photo boxes. Was told one should store inks upside-down so use label on bottom of each. Keep pigment inks in one box, dye inks in another. Try to keep them sorted in rainbow order.

  5. Alice Justice says:

I store my ink pads in a wood cassette storage shelving unit.
Thank you for the opportunity to win your great give-a-way!

  6. Donna M says:

I love organization but you wouldn’t know it by looking at my stash! I currently have my ink pads in a cabinet where you can’t see the colors because they are layered on top of each other. I need a new system!

  7. Michele says:

I have a wooden shelf that I keep ink pads in. Thanks for another video!!

  8. I keep my collection of Distress inks clipped in Media Stix that I got at Best Buy. They’re meant to hold CDs/DVDs, but work well for the ink pads (not the mini pads, though). My “regular” ink pads I have in a storage unit I built myself, somewhat like the Organize More style, that I screwed to the wall over my craft desk. As I said over on your YouTube video, I really appreciate all the information you give out, especially in this video! Thanks so much, and thanks for the great giveaway! ~ Andrea 🙂

  9. Rebecca says:

Thanks to Organized More for the giveaway! I don’t have a lot of inks, so they are easily contained in a couple school case type containers. 🙂

  10. Pattie says:

Love the dot idea, just order them and will start tomorrow putting them on. I have my ink pads stacked up in no particular order just to keep them together. The dots will work wonders.

    thanks

  11. Sharon Wade says:

I store my inks flat in a plastic storage case in a storage trolley.

  12. Harpa Luthersdottir says:

I have stampin up storage for my inks 😀 i would like the ikea unit, but its to expencive to send it to iceland 🙁

  13. patonslake says:

I organize my stamp pads on a shelf, similar to what you have but it’s on my table. I’m also moving to cube stamp pads from companies that offer it. All my Papertrey Ink pads are cube size and I put them in the tins by Tim Holtz. Great for space saving. Finally I have my swatches of ink as you have on your video. I love it. I can compare colors instead of hunting and looking at the ink pads.

You really are the consumer reporter for the paper crafty set!!

  14. Linda Duensing says:

I have two old wooden holder cassette holders and I they are stored alphabetically. There is no real science to my organization and I am now working on better organization. I am working on your swatch idea for my inks so that I can better see what I have and take them with me when I shop. I have used a number of your organization ideas and they are working reallygreatl for me. Thanks for sharing.

    :Linda D.

  15. Carol says:

My inks are all stored in shoe box containers, or stacked on cabinet shelves, or stacked next to my work space… You get the picture… I drool when I look at your storage and organization videos.

  16. M'Liss says:

I store my most used inks in an old wooden soda holder. It just doesn’t hold that many. Some or just stacked and others in boxes/drawers. This would be fabulous to win! 🙂

  17. janet gillen says:

my inks are stored in shoe boxes. One is clear and the other is cardboard.

  18. Angie Hall says:

I have a carrousel type storage for most my inks(but alas it is full and I keep buying inks.). My wood crafty hubby built me a small wooden unit for my Distress inks. It’s beautiful. Right now I have my extras stored in this unit but they do stick out some. Thanks again for steering us to good folks for supplies.

  19. Kathy H says:

I store my ink pads in a series of metal shelves made for that purpose. They hold all of my Hero Arts dye inks and all of my distress inks (the full line of each) plus some chalk inks and other craft supplies. I like the idea of the ink dots better than spending time putting a swatch book together. Quick and easy leaves more time for crafting!

  20. Sandie Scott says:

I converted 2 tea bag display caddies for my distress inks but my other inks are sored in Totally Tiffany EZ2O bags so i can take them with me if I want.

  21. Betty says:

    Hi Jennifer,

For a long time, I have used the dot system to identify the color of the ink pads. I store them upside down but I notice you don’t. My collection has grown since my dear husband built me a storage unit years ago so I would love to win this $100. Thank you for sharing your great organization tips with us.

  22. I store mine in a fridge bin but the inks keep wanting to stack so they are hard to grab just one!

  23. Sally K says:

My inks are stored in plastic shoe boxes. Poor things need a new snazzy home! Thanks so much for this amazing chance.

  24. vicki says:

I use Alex drawers from Ikea with refrigerator shelf units for some and 2 wooden shelf units for my Distress inks. Garage sale finds, I believe. I also use your swatch book which has become so useful – thank you, thank you, thank you for that.

Your ink storage videos have been so helpful. At the moment I don’t have a system to store my inks. I have a few in my crop bags. Some are thrown in drawers. And others are on my work space. It’s time to get organized.

  31. Dinna Diaz says:

I love the way you store your inks, they’re user friendly and each color can be found easily! Currently mine are stacked in a drawer and I have to pull them all out when I want to use them. Your organization system is great and definitely need to set it up for myself. Thanks for all your tips, they are always great and inspiring!

  32. Teresa P says:

Right now my ink pads are just in a basket I got at the dollar store but I’m going to be ordering one of these cabinets from Organized More next payday. Thanks for all the tips and wonderful videos on storage, they help a lot.

  39. Judy Kilgore says:

I have mine by color in a drawer but thinking about different options.

  40. Debbie says:

  42. Becky W says:

I’ve got all my Memento Dew Drop inks in my desk drawer, and my full size ink pads are in a shoe box! I really need help getting organized, as my collection is growing!

  43. Terri says:

I have 2 plastic shoe boxes filled with inks that I have to rummage through. Eventually I want to make a foamcore board ink storage unit for them. I do have the coin sheets to organize them visually though.

  44. Deb says:

Most of my stamp pads are stored in a shoe box. I would love to have them displayed. I do not have a lot of counter space so something I can hang would be perfect. Thanks for all your ideas once again.

  45. Bonnie A says:

Cluttered in a drawer lol. But then I have the memento tear drop ink pads and some Tim Holtz mini distress ink pads so I get variety so they aren’t too bad…although they seem to be multiplying. Go figure 🙂

  46. Marie says:

    I so need new organization!!

  47. I would love to store my inks in one of the organize more cabinets!!

  48. ES says:

    Mine are divided–
–Pigment and chalk inks go in an old makeup giveaway box…in rainbow order.
–Big Distress inks are in a clear shoe box.
–Small distress inks are in the purpose made metal box that holds 12…but I want more of those!
–And my memento tuxedo black, ranger black and sepia archival and versa mark are on my desktop…ready at all times!
But I would LOVE to put them all together in something super organized! Love those dots!!!

  49. Barb H. says:

I can definitely use some organizational help. Right after I post, I will be going directly to the organization playlist on you tube. Thanks!
