It seems that almost all stamp companies now have coordinating dies available for the stamp sets they sell. I have some of these coordinating die sets and I really wanted to find a way to get more out of them to make the investment worth it. And today’s technique is a great example!

After stamping the Avery Elle Monsters Stamps on a white die cut banner and coloring them with Copic Markers, I applied masks cut with the coordinating dies. (Boy, does using the dies save time!) I gently applied Distress Ink over the mask with an Ink Blending Tool. The results? A bright, white, thin outline around the monsters… along with a soft a halo of color.

I embossed my cards with the We R Memory Keepers Dotted Next Level Embossing Folder. I tell ya – these embossing folders are incredible. Such dimension!

This card design could work with so many stamps you may have. I think I will be making more! Oh – and for another video showing how to use coordinating dies for masking, head HERE.

  1. I love coordinating dies but I think they can get pricy. Most of times I prefer to buy more stamps than the matching dies. I really depends on the stamps. If it’s a complicated design or if I plan on use them often, the matching die would be nice but since I don’t do much mass producing, I prefer to fussy cut . Thanks for sharing a wonderful idea again!

  2. I just started to do some dies cutting after watching your videos and since I just started I have to be very careful not to spend $$$ I do not have. I love those coordination dies because I can do so much with it and save time doing it, but again they are a bit pricey so I just have to buy one at a time.

  3. I have bought a few matching sets but haven’t used them as much as I would like. More often than not I like to cut closer to the image. The ones I do have are usually ones I can also use independantly of the stamps as well for maximum usage eg. instruments, flowers.

  4. I would prefer to get the matching dies as well as the stamp but it means I have to sacrifice ordering a different stamp set. It would be wonderful to buy them together as a a bundle at a cheaper price overall, like I know one brand offers. It would make cardmaking faster and easier. Love your website and ideas! Thanks for sharing the love! πŸ™‚

  5. I love using stamps and am using some on my Christmas cards and mini album that I am making. I have never used stamps with coordinating dies because we don’t have any and i really don’t know if i would use them anyways.

  6. The little monsters are adorable and cards are great! Whenever I can, I do buy the coordinating die and stamp sets especially if the stamp has intricate parts that would be a little bit hard to fuzzy cut.

  7. I love using my stamps with matching dies! It saves so much time, but unfortunately I can’t always spoil myself to getting both!!

  8. It is nice to have the coordinating die because, just like you said, it makes cutting the image easier especially if you are creating in bulk. But I tend to purchase the stamp set first then save up for the coordinating die.

  9. Coordinating dies make things so much easier! I hate cutting things out with scissors, so when I can use a die, it makes me much happier!

  10. Hi
I always try to get the matching dies…not just because it’s obviously easier…but I NEED to… I have severe carpal tunnel in both hands. I discovered my love for crafting after being diagnosed πŸ™ So for me, it’s a must…saves my hands from fuzzy cutting! And I don’t have to entirely give up crafting ! LOL!
    thanks, Rocio

  11. I only sometimes get the matching die sets, only if I can convince myself that I will use them a lot instead of occasionally. I find dies are usually very expensive, so if I make the investment, they need to be very versatile.

  12. I personally donΒ΄t get coordinating dies for my stamps because I don’t have a Big Shot machine. I would rather spend the money on other types of crafting materials instead. However, there are times when having a Big Shot would come in very handy!

  13. Love the idea of using coordinating dies as a mask; how quick!! And the white halo actually looks very posh!! I don’t have a die cutting machine (yet), so I don’t buy any coordinating dies, but surely they save you a ton of time & when you know you will use a stampset for many cards I think it would be worth it!! Thanks for the great inspiration & i love the good cause you support! Yours, Steph

  14. I try to buy the matching die set when I can because even though I can fussy cut fairly well it saves me time when I don’t have to fussy cut. Love the technique for masking. I would have never thought of it. Have been wanting to get WRMK folders but I have seen two different measurements on them. One measurement would mean that it would fit through my Cuttlebug and the other measurement would mean they are just a little to large for the Cuttlebug.

  15. I love getting matching dies to stamps that would seem cumbersome to cut out. Otherwise, I’m fine with fussy cutting. I love the cute monster stamps!

  16. I love matching dies and try to buy them for my stamp sets. It does get expensive but I find if I don’t purchase them, I regret it. Love these cards!!

  17. I like the matching dies! No more fussy cutting πŸ™‚ Thanks for showing another way to use them by making masks.

  18. Super cute cards Jennifer and great to have another use for these dies. I don’t often get the coordinating die because I typically like the images cut close and like you I quite like fussy cutting

  19. I’m just getting into the matching dies with the stamps and I’m not 100% sold on it yet. Doesn’t keep me from buying them though. I love this tip for masking though, brilliant!

  20. Love the cards especially with the google eyes – so cute! I’m not a good fussy cutter so coordinating dies for me are worth it. Glad to see another use for them!

  21. I’m new to die cutting, so I don’t have many dies yet. I like the idea of matching dies with the stamp sets.

  22. I like stamps that have coordinating dies – especially if they are small images like the ones that Mama Elephant, Paper Smooches, or Lawn Fawn. But since the dies cost more than the stamps, I try to figure out how often that I would use them. Sometime that doesn’t always work out but I at least try πŸ™‚

  23. These are adorable! I am not usually a monster fan but I really love these. I also love the open box in the set . I can see a monster popping out of the box for a birthday surprise.

  24. This is a great idea!! I love to buy dies but it’s not always economical – so I only buy when the stamps are difficult to cut myself!!

  25. I would love to get matching dies too but it is rather pricey to purchase both sets. so I just pick the set that I would find more useful

  26. Thanks for the 2 giveaways! These are definitely some happy kids cards, the kids will love them! I don’t usually buy coordinating dies just because it’s pricey to buy the stamps and the dies.

  27. I usually do buy the coordinating dies because I have trouble with my hands and fussy cutting is painful. I don’t like how much they cost though! Thank you so much for the chance to win such generous giveaways!

  28. I always try to buy the matching dies. I hate fussy cutting! I’ve been practicing as there are a lot of stamp sets without matching dies.
Thank you so much for such an amazing giveaway!

  29. I have some coordinating dies and they are so usefull, but I have never used them for masking as you did on this video. Thanks for the tip, will use it, fot sure πŸ™‚

  30. Just for the record, I’m pretty sure that I have the World’s Greatest Mom <3, but when I see the beautiful projects you make for & with kids, I realize your children are surely blessed as well! XO God bless you!

  31. I forgot to answer the question: I love matching dies, but often forego purchasing them so I can buy more stamps & supplies. I wish the prices would come down some, because I want everything I see, LOL! I have a Silhouette, & I’m trying to learn how to use that instead if fussy cutting, but if really rather have the dies if I could afford both… especially for sets with lots of little images.

  32. Because I have not so much EURO also I dont buy the coordinating dies I can du my self fussy cut and save a bit of my little EURO
    your card is sooo cuuutee
love the white outline there because of coordinating dies
    lovely POST Jennifer

  33. I only buy the co-ordinating dies occasionally and normally only for stamps that I think will be difficult to fussy cut. love all the tips and ideas you share

  34. That a great way to use the die-cuts for masking (and not only for cutting) πŸ˜€
I’ve got to try it out, too. So thank you for sharing these cool idea!

  35. What a fantastic idea and really love the thin white line around the image. Really makes it pop, so will have to do this for sure!! I would love to buy all matching dies for my stamp sets but just can’t afford it. So I try to work out which ones would be easy to fussy cut and if I can, buy the dies for the more difficult cuts.
