Video: Non-Paper Die Cutting + Giveaway

Hello! Today’s video shares three cards… all sharing ideas for non-paper die cutting.

One easy way to get more from your dies is to use them with something besides just paper. In this video, I used various Paper Smooches dies (they are all linked at the end of this post) to die cut from felt, foam, cork, burlap, glitter sheets, and more.

Felt is one of my favorite things to die cut. (I like My Favorite Things and Papertrey Ink felt. To see tips for die cutting felt with intricate dies, watch THIS.) I was also thrilled to find the adhesive-backed glitter sheets from Tim Holtz. (Yes, Tim Holtz!) Perfect for die cutting. Oh – and be sure to check out the video to see how I use a tag die to create this rectangle background…

I finally found a collection of pretty-colored craft foam to use on my cards! And it was perfect for this shaker card. (Isn’t that hello die fantastic?)

I was needing some non-girly congrats cards, so the cork and burlap fedoras were perfect. And the faux-stitched border helps give some interest to these simple cards.

There are so many great things you can use with your dies besides paper. Others to try? Fabric, vellum, heat transfer material, ribbon and more.

  1. You inspire me with all your tutorials. I really like the idea to die cut foam sheets to add dimension to my cards. I will try die cutting some felt soon.

  2. I only tried diecutting felt and vellum… but I’d be excited to try cork board and some fabric!

  3. I have not used by dies to cut anything other than paper. I was always a little worried that it would harm the dies. I am so glad to know that I can use my thin dies to cut thicker items. Thanks!

  4. I do cut other materials like foam and vellum depending on my project otherwise I trace and use scissors. Thanks much!

  5. I haven’t tried, but you have inspired me. I have a bunch of felt and burlap. Let’s see what I can do with that! Thanks for the idea.

  6. Besides paper the only thing I have tried die cutting is cork, it worked great, but I always forget that you could use other things to die cut, thanks for reminding me!

  7. My niece Jordan, she was 9 at the time, wanted to cut out flowers. I got her some felt and we cut out a ton of felt flowers. Then she made her mom a wall hanging and we made hair bows from the rest.

  8. I have die-cut foam and felt, but I don’t think I’ve used any on a card yet. I also have some thin balsa wood I’ve been wanting to try.

  9. I haven’t had my die cutting machine very long, so I have not tried to cut anything besides paper. But, you always inspire me with your awesome ideas, thanks!

  10. I haven’t ventured out yet, but I need too.. I love how you stretch yourself to try new ways.. I need to do more if that…

  11. I have cut leather before I’m currently working on how to stiffen it to make earrings. So many cute dies to make easy peasy earrings with. Love the Cards.

  12. I have die cut cork sheets to make ATCs using Tim Holtz’ atc and corners die. I have also die cut ribbon, aluminum foil, and felt.

  13. I haven’t die cut anything except paper and card stock, but I am planning to. Once I receive my Re Ordered Sizzix Big Shot Pro…… witch I am so excited about. This is a Lovely tutorial!, You inspire me in your personal talent.

  14. Your Youtubes demonstrating Icraft deco foil really inspired me to take your ideas and practice to see what I could do. You make it look fun and easy!!

  15. I mostly die cut paper; however, I do die cut felt once in a while. Last Christmas I used a die-cut felt poinsettia on all of my cards. People loved it.

  16. I’ve die cut polymer clay! It’s easiest with the Bigz dies, but if the cured polymer clay sheet is thin enough almost any good quality die seems to work (warm the polymer clay somewhat to make it easier to die cut).

  17. Thanks to you Jennifer McGuire I have really gotten addicted to fun fun foam. The other thing that I’ve cut is the clear acetate packaging that my products come in to make stencils.

  18. I have die cut foam, velum and metal tape in the past. I think I would like to get the package from Tim Holtz and try the cork board. Thank for the inspiration.

  19. I just cut Shrinky Dink plastic, Shimmer Sheetz and Fantasy Film. Shrinky Dink cut out cleanly (I tried generic shrink plastic first and had a problem with white stress marks). Shimmer Sheetz worked with a cardstock shim. I fused 3 layers of Fantasy film together and used a 2 layer cardstock shim. Thanks for motivating me to try out the supplies that I have been intending to use for a while. I want to make my own sequins and confetti in the future. I have been trying to decide on which sequin and small shape dies to purchase.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

  20. I haven’t yet …. although I purchased some white fun foam; just not brave enough, I guess!

  21. The only thing besides paper that I have die cut is fun foam to go under my die cut to pop it off the page! An idea I got from you!

  22. I’ve done fun foam and acetate. I’m eager to try felt and cork now. Thanks for the fabulous video. You rock!

  23. I’ve tried fun foam to use as a solid dimensional, like how you did in your video. It works great!

  24. Hi Jennifer, I need help. I die cut lots of things, and we have foam backed glitter sheets in Australia which cut beautifully. I (and my friends who I have asked for help) have real problems with Tim’s sticky glitter sheets and also double sided tape stuck on card when cutting intricate words. I end up using card and a second layer of foam to give dimension. What suggestions can you give to help. Please….. Thanks 🙂
