Video: Non-Paper Die Cutting + Giveaway

Hello! Today’s video shares three cards… all sharing ideas for non-paper die cutting.

[All supplies are linked to multiple sources in the thumbnails at the end of this post. Affiliate links used. To watch the video in HD on YouTube, click HERE.]

One easy way to get more from your dies is to use them with something besides just paper. In this video, I used various Paper Smooches dies (they are all linked at the end of this post) to die cut from felt, foam, cork, burlap, glitter sheets, and more.

Felt is one of my favorite things to die cut. (I like My Favorite Things and Papertrey Ink felt. To see tips for die cutting felt with intricate dies, watch THIS.) I was also thrilled to find the adhesive-backed glitter sheets from Tim Holtz. (Yes, Tim Holtz!) Perfect for die cutting. Oh – and be sure to check out the video to see how I use a tag die to create this rectangle background…

I finally found a collection of pretty-colored craft foam to use on my cards! And it was perfect for this shaker card. (Isn’t that hello die fantastic?)

I was needing some non-girly congrats cards, so the cork and burlap fedoras were perfect. And the faux-stitched border helps give some interest to these simple cards.

There are so many great things you can use with your dies besides paper. Others to try? Fabric, vellum, heat transfer material, ribbon and more.

  1. I’ve die cut felt, fabric, leather, wood veneer, cardboard, foam and thin metal sheets. Thanks for the chance to win!

  2. Your cards are always so adorable! I die cut felt a lot…esp when die cutting the 3d flowers. I also die cut acetate and burlap a lot as well. So much you can do!

  3. Years ago I used a very basic nativity shaped die to “emboss” on a sheet of copper, matted the copper and had it framed. It turned out so beautiful that my sisters and mother insisted I do a sheet for them.

  4. Yes, I’ve die-cut felt, glitter sheets (non-adhesive), vellum, fabric, cork and fun foam but not on a regular basis. Thanks for the reminder and chance to win a PS stamp set, Jennifer!

  5. Hi Jennifer, lots of die cutting but as I only have the cuttlebug not as adventurous as I could be. Only things different or fiddly were layers of aluminium in place of silver cardstock and glitter sheets which I found to be some successful some not. Thanks for the hints today

  6. I’ve used transparencies, vellum, and fabric but not often enough. Thanks for the great reminder to branch out Jennifer.

  7. Hi Jennifer, I love your video on all the possibilities with a die cutting machine. Unfortunately I don’t have one myself, but thinking of my collection of hand-made paper (with flowers, grass etc.), I’m sure that would give any die cut an amazing texture & effect! Oh well… maybe Santa brings me one this year!? = D
Thanks for the great chance to win – I love Paper Smooches’ stamps!! Yours, Steph

  8. I have die cut fabric to use as appliqué on costumes and pillows, I’ve also die cut fabric circles to layer them to make flowers for handmade headbands. So fun to be able to use products you own for multiple types of crafting.

    Thanks for the giveaway.

  9. This is so clever. The only other thing I’ve cut with my die cutter is photographs. I took a picture of the fabric on my son’s baby quilt and cut title letters from it to place on a scrapbook page. I also took a close-up of our Christmas tree and die-cut letters from the picture for a title on a Christmas page. I can’t wait to try some of these things I never imagined I could die cut! Thank you.

  10. You are one smart and original cookie!!! I just love what you come up with. I’ve die cut aluminum foil and chipboard. That’s as far out as I’ve gone. LOL

  11. I just got my cuttlebug two months ago, so haven’t tried anything besides paper. Thanks for sharing this post though. It’s very inspiring!

  12. I’ve die cut plastic, cork, felt, fabric, balsa wood sheets, fun foam, burlap, and even dried leaves. I LOVE my dies!

  13. I really love to use dies on materials other than paper. I cut cork, felt, fabric, foam, acetate…i never tried tins…but will be the next…!

  14. I’ve die cut burlap ribbon for a shadow box scrapbook page of my nephew. I loved the way it turned out. I’ve also done thin chipboard for embellishments, and fabric, too. Dies are soooo versatile!

  15. Another wonderful video, love that you pack so much into each video. Thanks!
I don’t think I’ve ever cut anything other than paper and card stock with my dies, but I might just be trying some other materials soon.

  16. Vellum is my most favorite thing to cute and then color the back even adding stickles to the back of the front!

  17. I’m mostly a paper crafter, but I have also cut vinyl. Ready to branch out and try more materials.

  18. The answer is Yes!! I have die cut felt, burlap, chipboard, magnet sheets (after watching your video!) and probably more!! I just love your videos and have learned much!! Thanks again and again and again….!!

  19. I have recently purchased the Big Shot, the magnetic platform, and some dies. What fun. I have only used paper and glitter paper so I will have fun trying the new materials you recommend. Again, you make this hobby so much fun. What a good job you do!

  20. No, have not die cut anything other than paper. The only thing was a paper bag but still paper.

  21. Great tutorial! I have wondered about the fun foam going thru and whether or not it was too thick. I make Christmas Tags sets to sell at Christmas and one that I made this year was a to go coffee cup and I used burlap and corruguted paper for the wrap that goes around the cup. It die cut perfectly!

  22. After seeing one of your videos y cut Julie’s flower die from a magnet sheet and it worked perfectly. Thanks for the chance

  23. I have tried foam–very fun. Also cork—also fun! I want to try felt–but good felt, like what you’ve used. Thanks for the chance!
