My Favorite Non-Crafty Things + GIVEAWAY

During My Favorite Crafty Things series, several people asked if I would be doing a list of favorite non-crafty things. I have wanted to do this for awhile (I have an on-going list of what I wanted to share) and thought it was time. Most of my things are pretty practical and all about making life easier… so maybe you will find something helpful here, too! (Affiliate links used in some cases.)

COOKING & EATING

I will be honest – I am not a fan of having a billion gadgets in my kitchen. (Who has the room or money anyway?) But there a few key things that help me a lot.

  1. Set & Forget Programmable Slow Cooker (Crockpot) – This guy has changed our lives. In fact, we even have two of them. A couple times a week, we create TWO batches of healthy crockpot meals at once. One crockpot holds our dinner for that evening and the other holds a meal we will put in the freezer for another time. The price is great and I love that you can program it so you don’t have to worry about a thing. I can’t recommend enough.
  2. Aroma Digital Rice Cooker – This is another “program and forget” kitchen device we couldn’t live without. It is great to have along with the crockpots. (We normally use basmati rice.)
  3. Skinnytaste – Most of the healthy crockpot meals we make are from the Skinnytaste recipe site. Our favorites? Santa Fe Chicken and Sesame Honey Chicken (with added broccoli). Both are tasty and reheat well.
  4. Egg Cooker – This seems so very silly but is so very awesome. In minutes you have perfectly cooked, easy-to-peel eggs. We use this a lot.
  5. Fruit Infusion Pitcher – I know many people struggle to drink a lot of water. When I find myself getting tired of plain water, I break out this guy. Add any fruit or cucumbers and you will be amazed how good it is. I drink at least two pitchers a day.
  6. Shakeology – Almost every day I have a Shakeology shake. These are tasty (and I am picky when it comes to shakes) and nutritious and help keep my tummy settled and happy. I know a lot of people who have lost a lot of weight with these. (I instead use it as a healthy snack. It has completely eliminated my sweet tooth.) My favorite is the Chocolate Shakeology with a couple tablespoons of PB2 Powder (healthy peanut butter) and water or almond milk. (It tastes like a Reese Cup shake. For real.) I also love the Vanilla Shakeology with a handful of frozen fruit, half a banana and water. These shakes have been awesome for me. If you are interested in finding out more, you can contact my non-pushy and encouraging friend, Amy HERE.
  7. Soft Cookies – So we are pretty strict about cooking and eating healthy meals at home. However, I also like to treat my family to homemade treats now and then. My kiddos love soft cookies. Wanna know an easy trick I learned from my Grandma? Put a few pieces of bread in the cookie jar. The cookies will stay amazingly soft. You’re welcome. ๐Ÿ™‚
  8. PackIt Freezable Lunch Bag – Our family takes packed lunches to school. This lunch bag is great as you freeze the whole thing and it keeps the food cold for a long time. So very cool.
  9. Nalgene Water Bottles – Finally! I finally found a water bottle that doesn’t leak. Perfect for the kid’s lunches.
  10. Sistema Containers – You may have seen that I use these in my craft room for many things, but I also have more-than-I-care-to-count for kid’s lunches. They are the perfect size and easy to open.

ORGANIZING

Not every part of my home is organized, but I do have some parts figured out. ๐Ÿ™‚

  1. OXO Containers – I adore the OXO Containers for our dry goods in our cabinet. It is nice to get away from lots of half-empty boxes and be able to load several boxes into one container. (Note: I only use plastic containers for dry foods and never put them in the microwave.)
  2. Brother Label Maker – Ah… my partner in organizing. I can’t recommend this guy enough. Be sure to check out THIS video where I show how to conserve the amount of tape you use. Also, be sure to get THIS adapter to save on battery use.
  3. Erin Condren Planner – I have shared my love for this planner many times, including in THIS post and video. I keep it practical and useful and it has completely improved my productivity, happiness and stress-level. It simply makes me happier. I like many things about this particular planner, but I know there are many great ones out there.
  4. Cordless Pivot Vac – I am very impressed by this little cordless vacuum. I use it in my craft room and kitchen and car and more. It holds power well, empties easily, and doesn’t break the bank. I am impressed.
  5. Zipper Pouches – So I will admit – I have more of these in my house than I care to tell you. ๐Ÿ™‚ I use them for craft kits, kid’s toys, errand-running-stuff, my planner, school paperwork, kid’s art stuff – – everything. They are handy and durable. (The price on Amazon varies a lot. Sometimes they are only $2.00 and sometimes they are higher. May want to keep an eye on them and buy a bunch when the price is low.)

OTHER

Just have a few other random things you may like…

  1. Ad Block – If you like surfing the web, visiting blogs, peeking in on Facebook, etc. and are tired of ads, try installing Ad Block. I love it. I never have to see an ad… watch ads on YouTube (YES!) or anything. Can’t recommend it enough. It is like magic.
  2. Bouqs – If you ever send flowers to loved ones that are far away, I recommend checking out The Bouqs. Their flowers are so “real” – not a cheesy, sad arrangement that sometimes you get with big online flower sites. Unique, lovely flowers. There are no hidden service charges and ordering is simple. (Use THIS link and get a free bouquet – worth $40 – with purchase.)
  3. Happy Instagram – If you are like me and find Facebook a bit discouraging (somewhat full of complaining, depressing, political stuff) and instead want to find a happy place that uplifts, I would recommend Instagram. There is one account on Instagram in particular that is so very happy – the photos of Harlow and Sage. Just trust me – it is worth a visit to see these happy dogs who love each other so very much. (You can find me on Instagram, too.)
  4. Kapok Pillow – My physical therapist recommended this pillow as a great one – good for your neck. The price is good and there aren’t the nasty chemicals you find in other pillows. You can also take out part of the stuffing to make it lighter if you want. I have been thrilled with it.
  5. Oils – First, let me start by saying that I was a HUGE skeptic of oils. HUGE. But after the suggestion of many and out of complete desperation, I decided to try them. Thanks to the oils, I no longer have allergy problems. I quit allergy shots… which I had been getting 3 every week or so for 29 years. All I do is diffuse the oils into the air once a day and I am good. Not sure if they will work for you, but they worked for me. OH – and my family doesn’t get nearly as sick as we used to since diffusing Thieves. That stuff is amazing. If you want to know more about all this stuff, my friend Kristina is the one to ask. She can help you with anything.

So there are a few products I love outside of the crafty world. I would love to hear what you are finding helpful in your life these days.

This post was a treasure trove of ideas! Thanks! A non crafty item I love if the flip fold folding aid for clothes. I like things to be neat and of similar sizes and the flip fold does the work and is simple to use!

  2. Linda Towill says:

I LOVE my Gel Pro floor mat. I bought the biggest one they make so it fits perfectly between my sink and stove. Takes the fatigue out of standing on a tile floor! In fact, I should get one for my craft room.

  3. I love the book Eco Dog, which has great tips and recipes for things to help keep your dog healthy and happy naturally. TFS! hugs, kristina

I love the Brother Label maker – had to get a second one as my husband kept taking mine to use in the office. I also love my crock pot – especially during tax season when the office is on 10 hour days. It is nice to come home to a wonderfully cooked meal instead of sandwiches. We search out new crock pot recipes online; we’ll have to check out the Skinnytaste site. A new site for me is Bark Box a box of doggie treats and toys that come once a month.
Have a great Christmas and thanks for all your posts through out the year.

  5. Sherron says:

Oh Amazon my second home! Thank you Jennifer for all your wonderful tutorials!!

  6. RandellynB says:

I love my Napa Style Santoku knives (set of 3) I bought about 10 years ago at Costco. They have been the best and only knives I go to in the kitchen. They never dull and are feel good in the hand; the three sizes are perfect, however, the medium size gets the most workout! Loved them so much that I bought my mother a set and then she then found set for my sister! They’re no longer made (in that style), but there is a set of 3 Chef’s knives (by Napa Style…Chef Michael Chiarello) which are just about as comparable; which I’m thinking of getting for my son. Good kitchen knives that hold an edge are a must!

One of my favorite non-crafty things is my pilot G-2 0.38 retractable pen. I use this as my everyday pen. It’s gel ink but the fine point reduces the drying time. I think I have found my favorite writing pen ( best of all, it’s refillable). It’s not new, it’s been around for years. But for everyday use ( making lists, jotting down notes, signing documents, etc.), I haven’t found a better pen ( that I like to write with). I could get rid of most of my pens and be content. Now I’m just looking for a good ballpoint pen to write with and then I can get rid of the rest of my pens. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Erica Hettwer says:

i love my avocado peeler that I found. It slices, pits and is dishwasher safe!

  9. lauraz says:

I love, love, love my Cooks Illustrated cookbooks.

  10. Julie Hulver says:

I love my Vitamix blender that I bought at Costco a couple of years ago. Nothing like a green smoothie!

  11. Kim Faucher says:

I love my set and forget crock pot too! There is souch I can do with it and it buys me extra time in the hectic busy evening hours!

  12. Jen says:

I turn daily to my Blendtec!

  13. Jeanne H says:

Thanks for the Brothers label maker advice. I’ve been wanting one since I saw one of your organizing videos.

  14. Jayne H. says:

I loved reading your suggestions for non-crafty things! I’m picking up that fruit infusion pitcher at BB&B tomorrow, with a coupon of course making it less than Amazon;) Love a deal!!!

  15. Nicole V says:

One thing I just discovered that I got as a gift is a gadget called Automatic. It’s so neat! It plugs into your car’s diagnostic port and gives you updates on how you’re driving, tips to improve fuel efficiency, and can check and clear codes when your maintenance light is on. It ALSO keeps track of where your car is if you have a habit of losing your car in the parking lot (which happens to me more often than I’d like to admit). I love it!!

  16. adie says:

I love my cast iron pot it is big enough for party catering and can go in the oven and on the top of the stove, I have had it for 26 years, my 4 kids are going to fight over it lol
Thanks for all your useful tips in info.
    hugs

  17. I don’t know how I lived without a smart phone. I have a Motorola that is about 4 years old and I plan to replace soon. My calendar of events is on my phone, my address book, it is so cool to be able to take photos & send them instantly, and obviously calling, texting, etc. I don’t use it for the games or music but it is so nice not to have my organizer and more in my purse!

  18. Stacy SImpson says:

    I love my iPhone 6!

  19. Ginny says:

i LOVE my egg cooker too! We use it all the time!

  20. Joy says:

One favorite thing? Just one? That’s hard, but right now my favorite thing is my Delonghi Portable heater. I live in a very large house and don’t like heating up every room! This is a fabulous solution. I just roll it into the room I’m in – craft, bedroom or tv room and the room is warm very quickly. I got mine at Home Depot. It has cut down on my electric bill (so I have more to spend on crafts) hahahaha

  21. Maribel Lugo says:

One of My favorite things, wish small tablet. It’s probably everyone’s and someone might be thinking really? There are many that have tablets, IPads, their phones but mine I have because of my Health. I was diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension. I am on a 24hr SubQ pump. Sometimes I have to stay in my room for days, upto 2 weeks. The pain, all the meds, oxygen. This tablet (galaxy) keeps me sane. I love cardmaking I watch all the youtubes. I go on blogs, etc. Dont know what i will do without it. Sorry my comment was long.

  22. Kirsten Brindley says:

I love my Blender Bottle for making protein shakes!

  23. Liddia says:

I have been wanting to try the oils. Hopefully they will help my son’s allergies.

  24. Loly Borda says:

I love the crock pot also, and the label maker is in my wish list. TFS

  25. Rachael Harrison says:

I think something I love that isn’t crafty is my Kindle. I love to read and it is so light that I can carry it in my purse with no problem. Plus I love that when I finish a book, I have a new one to start right away!
PS. My birthday is the 21st. Just saying… Lol ๐Ÿ˜‰

  26. Pai Meng says:

i love burt’s bees lip shimmer!

  27. Carol L. says:

My husband isn’t very crafty and I love him! But from a household perspective, I love my bread machine! The way the house smells when bread is baking is the best! Thanks!!

  28. valerie sobus says:

My two favorite non-crafty things would have to be my betsy johnson perfume (somehow whenever i’m having a bad hair/face/outfit day, putting on my favorite scent can make me feel 10x prettier!) and my wedding ring/band — they’re not expensive or fancy but they remind me of the most beautiful favorite promise I ever made ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. Monica says:

I’m really curious about the essential oils. Thanks for the info!

  30. Wendy says:

Those essentials oils may be my next favorite non-crafty thing. Thank you for the link to Kristina’s site.

  31. Karen Wilson says:

I am really interested in the essential oils. The zip bags look good too. Thanks for the information.

  32. Jaimie says:

I am a Sistema addict too! We have tons of them, I use them for lunches as well as in the craft room, and Hubby uses them for Fishing lures! I will also be on the lookout for those zip lock pouches. I have literally TONS of stuff I need to organize, and these would be a lifesaver! Also, I just installed Adblock, THANKYOU for sharing! How fantabulous is that!! I already have a Brother label maker, but I must admit I would LOVE the ability to do some of the things your fancy one does.. Like save tape & 2 row labels. The tape is expensive & sure does add up when you use it a lot ๐Ÿ™‚

  33. Thanks for sharing, Jennifer … such great ideas, especially the essential oils! I’ve found Olbas Oil is fabulous … one single drop in hot water (to breathe in), on a kleenex or on pj’s alleviates a blocked nose and eases cold/hayfever symptoms. Anita ๐Ÿ™‚

  34. Kelly B says:

I thought oils were a gimmick but a friend at school introduced me to them. I have had breathing troubles (allergies) and use an inhaler on occasion. RC and Raven (one on front and one on back) has made a huge improvement in my breathing. LOVE THEM!

  35. Pam Thornton says:

Something non-crafty that I love, That would be my pampered chef paring knives with the self sharpening cases! I use those every day, especially the longer one. It seems to cut any food better than any of my other knives. If I think it’s not as sharp as it was I just pull it in & out of the self sharpening case a few times and back to being good as new! I don’t think pampered chef sells these anymore. too bad. They are great!

  36. Jenny A says:

I love Gina’s Skinnybook cookbook! Thanks for a chance!

  37. vicky says:

my favorite non-crafty thing is my mini screwdriver kit. I can’t tell you how many times I use it on all sorts of things. It is so popular that my husband and sons use it as a “go-to” all the time….and…since they don’t put back what they take, I bought myself another one that I keep hidden so I always have access to all the sizes when I need them! Shhh – they don’t know.

  38. LaDonna says:

I have many of the same non crafty items. My newest favorite non crafty item is the Grid It Organizer (bought at Amazon). It keeps all the extra cables for my electronic devices organized and accessible!

  39. Tracy says:

Thanks for another great post Jennifer! I love flameless candles that have a built in timer. I can set them to go on and off automatically and I love that option, A room may be dark when I enter it but my candles are on and lighting the way. Plus it is just one more pretty light on at this time of the year.

  40. Betsy Ferguson says:

Thank you for the chance to win I love your videos

  41. Barb H. says:

Gina’s Skinnybook cookbook sounds great! Who doesn’t need some good healthy family dinner recipes. Add in that there are crock pot recipes included and I am sold.

  42. Kari D says:

As always you are generous and thoughtful. THANKS for the great info about products that you love….which led me to another post you did on kits and the perfect gift for my budding engineer nephew. You rock! Merry Christmas to you and your family!

  43. Tifany D. says:

I love all of my Lodge cast iron skillets, lids, and other cookware!

  44. Paulette says:

These are all wonderful, Jennifer! Thanks so much for sharing your favorite things all round. The best non crafty things I can share right now are, Probiotics from the health food store. A young mommy shared them with me and they have made a great impact on my grand baby’s digestive health. Raw Probiotics Kids and Elderberry Concentrate, they are a bit costly at around $20.oo or so each, but were well worth it to get some good flora back into our digestive system. The kids one is a powder and is easily mixed into oats, mac n cheese, applesauce, etc. Our baby is 2 and a half, I add the Elderberry concentrate to water, light grape juice and light apple juice (all together in a sippie cup). I only have Millie twice a week and I give these to her both days. Thanks for everything you do! Merry Christmas!

  45. That’s easy because I have so many things I love!! My Vitamix for my kale smoothies is a must. My Tuperware salad lunch box kit. My NIV Study Bible is also part of my must have’s and get my motivation from reading those beloved scriptures that feed my soul. I too like Instagram but love inspirational pieces mostly. Pinterest is my fav’ though and I make all my plans and organize where I am going or projects I am looking in to, by making different boards. I took my Italy trip this year and couldn’t have taken such great pics without my Nikon Coolpix L820 with backlighting. The museum pics were awesome and no flash. Merry Christmas, Jennifer and enjoy!

  46. Sandie says:

I too love my crockpot, and I just recently bought the Brother P-Touch and use it constantly! I think I’m going to be looking into that pillow you mentioned for my daughter who has neck trouble from a car accident, so thank you for always taking the time to share with us!! May you & your family have a Very Merry Christmas!!

  47. Brithzi says:

Two of my favorite non-crafty things are my Gaggia super automatic espresso machine (I love coffee) and my Breville Smart Oven (toaster/convection oven). I like your cordless pivot vac–thinking of getting one to use in my craftroom.

  48. Mary P says:

I’m Crock pot cooking at this very moment! Love it! I also have three Brother label makers – in different parts of the house! I’ve had my oldest one for over 15 years – it’s still working perfectly! Another favorite thing of mine is the VitaMix. I hardly ever used my blender but I use this thing regularly! It makes great healthy soups and smoothies – very powerful!

  49. Cora says:

At this time I really like the lights in the christmastree.
