My Favorite Non-Crafty Things + GIVEAWAY

During My Favorite Crafty Things series, several people asked if I would be doing a list of favorite non-crafty things. I have wanted to do this for awhile (I have an on-going list of what I wanted to share) and thought it was time. Most of my things are pretty practical and all about making life easier… so maybe you will find something helpful here, too! (Affiliate links used in some cases.)

COOKING & EATING

I will be honest – I am not a fan of having a billion gadgets in my kitchen. (Who has the room or money anyway?) But there a few key things that help me a lot.

  1. Set & Forget Programmable Slow Cooker (Crockpot) – This guy has changed our lives. In fact, we even have two of them. A couple times a week, we create TWO batches of healthy crockpot meals at once. One crockpot holds our dinner for that evening and the other holds a meal we will put in the freezer for another time. The price is great and I love that you can program it so you don’t have to worry about a thing. I can’t recommend enough.
  2. Aroma Digital Rice Cooker – This is another “program and forget” kitchen device we couldn’t live without. It is great to have along with the crockpots. (We normally use basmati rice.)
  3. Skinnytaste – Most of the healthy crockpot meals we make are from the Skinnytaste recipe site. Our favorites? Santa Fe Chicken and Sesame Honey Chicken (with added broccoli). Both are tasty and reheat well.
  4. Egg Cooker – This seems so very silly but is so very awesome. In minutes you have perfectly cooked, easy-to-peel eggs. We use this a lot.
  5. Fruit Infusion Pitcher – I know many people struggle to drink a lot of water. When I find myself getting tired of plain water, I break out this guy. Add any fruit or cucumbers and you will be amazed how good it is. I drink at least two pitchers a day.
  6. Shakeology – Almost every day I have a Shakeology shake. These are tasty (and I am picky when it comes to shakes) and nutritious and help keep my tummy settled and happy. I know a lot of people who have lost a lot of weight with these. (I instead use it as a healthy snack. It has completely eliminated my sweet tooth.) My favorite is the Chocolate Shakeology with a couple tablespoons of PB2 Powder (healthy peanut butter) and water or almond milk. (It tastes like a Reese Cup shake. For real.) I also love the Vanilla Shakeology with a handful of frozen fruit, half a banana and water. These shakes have been awesome for me. If you are interested in finding out more, you can contact my non-pushy and encouraging friend, Amy HERE.
  7. Soft Cookies – So we are pretty strict about cooking and eating healthy meals at home. However, I also like to treat my family to homemade treats now and then. My kiddos love soft cookies. Wanna know an easy trick I learned from my Grandma? Put a few pieces of bread in the cookie jar. The cookies will stay amazingly soft. You’re welcome. 🙂
  8. PackIt Freezable Lunch Bag – Our family takes packed lunches to school. This lunch bag is great as you freeze the whole thing and it keeps the food cold for a long time. So very cool.
  9. Nalgene Water Bottles – Finally! I finally found a water bottle that doesn’t leak. Perfect for the kid’s lunches.
  10. Sistema Containers – You may have seen that I use these in my craft room for many things, but I also have more-than-I-care-to-count for kid’s lunches. They are the perfect size and easy to open.

ORGANIZING

Not every part of my home is organized, but I do have some parts figured out. 🙂

  1. OXO Containers – I adore the OXO Containers for our dry goods in our cabinet. It is nice to get away from lots of half-empty boxes and be able to load several boxes into one container. (Note: I only use plastic containers for dry foods and never put them in the microwave.)
  2. Brother Label Maker – Ah… my partner in organizing. I can’t recommend this guy enough. Be sure to check out THIS video where I show how to conserve the amount of tape you use. Also, be sure to get THIS adapter to save on battery use.
  3. Erin Condren Planner – I have shared my love for this planner many times, including in THIS post and video. I keep it practical and useful and it has completely improved my productivity, happiness and stress-level. It simply makes me happier. I like many things about this particular planner, but I know there are many great ones out there.
  4. Cordless Pivot Vac – I am very impressed by this little cordless vacuum. I use it in my craft room and kitchen and car and more. It holds power well, empties easily, and doesn’t break the bank. I am impressed.
  5. Zipper Pouches – So I will admit – I have more of these in my house than I care to tell you. 🙂 I use them for craft kits, kid’s toys, errand-running-stuff, my planner, school paperwork, kid’s art stuff – – everything. They are handy and durable. (The price on Amazon varies a lot. Sometimes they are only $2.00 and sometimes they are higher. May want to keep an eye on them and buy a bunch when the price is low.)

OTHER

Just have a few other random things you may like…

  1. Ad Block – If you like surfing the web, visiting blogs, peeking in on Facebook, etc. and are tired of ads, try installing Ad Block. I love it. I never have to see an ad… watch ads on YouTube (YES!) or anything. Can’t recommend it enough. It is like magic.
  2. Bouqs – If you ever send flowers to loved ones that are far away, I recommend checking out The Bouqs. Their flowers are so “real” – not a cheesy, sad arrangement that sometimes you get with big online flower sites. Unique, lovely flowers. There are no hidden service charges and ordering is simple. (Use THIS link and get a free bouquet – worth $40 – with purchase.)
  3. Happy Instagram – If you are like me and find Facebook a bit discouraging (somewhat full of complaining, depressing, political stuff) and instead want to find a happy place that uplifts, I would recommend Instagram. There is one account on Instagram in particular that is so very happy – the photos of Harlow and Sage. Just trust me – it is worth a visit to see these happy dogs who love each other so very much. (You can find me on Instagram, too.)
  4. Kapok Pillow – My physical therapist recommended this pillow as a great one – good for your neck. The price is good and there aren’t the nasty chemicals you find in other pillows. You can also take out part of the stuffing to make it lighter if you want. I have been thrilled with it.
  5. Oils – First, let me start by saying that I was a HUGE skeptic of oils. HUGE. But after the suggestion of many and out of complete desperation, I decided to try them. Thanks to the oils, I no longer have allergy problems. I quit allergy shots… which I had been getting 3 every week or so for 29 years. All I do is diffuse the oils into the air once a day and I am good. Not sure if they will work for you, but they worked for me. OH – and my family doesn’t get nearly as sick as we used to since diffusing Thieves. That stuff is amazing. If you want to know more about all this stuff, my friend Kristina is the one to ask. She can help you with anything.

So there are a few products I love outside of the crafty world. I would love to hear what you are finding helpful in your life these days.

I love my crockpot. I don’t have much energy thanks to Lyme disease, but have some in the morning. If I wait until shortly before dinner to begin cooking, we would never have a home cooked meal.

I am going to save the list you gave, I’m interested in the vacuum and a couple other things. TFS

  5. Jackie W. says:

I ordered 2 Erin Condren planners, thanks to you and Kristina! I can’t wait to get mine, the other one is for my son at college. I’m so excited for those!

I do have a tip for you to replace dryer sheets, which I hear have harmful chemicals in them. I buy some liquid fabric softener and put it in a spray bottle. I then take a piece of scrap material, I’m using my son’s old flannel pajamas, cut in squares, to spray on and then throw it in the dryer. It really works! And I’m saving a ton of money by doing it this way.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

I discovered lazy susans for storing spices, oils and vinegars more than 20 years ago. I think most of mine are by rubbermaid and the spice one it two tier. I find that I can get two sets of two in a skinny cabinet.

  12. Denise says:

This is similar to your crockpot, the Ninja 3-in-1 cooking system. It’s a slow cooker and stove like features so you can brown meat (no extra pan then), cook corn bread , desserts, etc. Is amazing. You should check it out. :0)

  13. Chelsea Treubig says:

I really love my Oreck vacuum. I hated vacuuming until we bought it. It hurt my back and was exhausting! But this thing only weighs 8 pounds. It makes such a difference and it works really well!

  16. Marilyn says:

I finally found a vegetable peeler that works… from Pampered Chef. I know it’s silly, but the right tools in the kitchen really make the job go faster!

I’m also an oil skeptic. I might have to look a little closer at what it might offer my family.

  22. Donna Day says:

I love my Oster Deep Fryer! It comes all apart for easy cleaning, I mean really easy cleaning! It does take a lot of oil to fill it but it’s worth it. It’s deep and can cook quite a bit without crowding and the food cooks evenly.

  23. Cynthia Clark says:

My label maker. Couldn’t find a thing without it.

  24. Karen L K says:

Your rice cooker reminded me that I really like mine but what I use it for is steaming veggies. That way they don’t get boiled and destroyed. I just bought a new one. I saw the one you mentioned here but we don’t use it that much for rice so I just needed a simple one for steaming.

  25. Joan Bettati says:

im sure each and every one of these are great. I trust your opinion on craft things and you have been right every time. So it follows that your recommendations on others would be just as right. Thanks

  26. My favorite non crafty love is my 6qt crock pot!!! Love it especially because its now my son’s basketball season and I don’t have time to get home from practice and cook.

  27. Kris in Alaska says:

I agree with you about crock pots! Especially in the winter mine gets a workout! The one thing I’d recommend also is a food dehydrator! If you have a veggie garden, grow fruit or like nuts a food dehydrator gives you a taste of summer in the winter!

  28. Carla S says:

I found a cherry and olive pitter that I love. I stayed away from cherries before because it was annoying to pit them, but now I don’t.

  29. Carolyn Fritchey says:

Love my Brother label maker. Makes me feel so organized!

  30. Laura Beck says:

I have recently rediscovered my crockpot, vintage 1976! Always looking for good recipes, I also love my hot air popcorn maker.

  31. Cindi L. says:

Thank you for sharing — both all your craft faves and tese non-crafty faves. My hubby recently started ordering club soda/seltzer in restaurants instead of diet soda. Then he started purchasing cans of it to drink at home. I hated having all the cans to take to recycling so I got a Soda Stream for him when it was on sale. Love, love, love it. I got it for him, but I use it just as much as he does. We don’t use the syrups or flavorings. Just carbonate our tap water. I love that we can control how carbonated it is – lightly carbonated is so much easier to drink and tastier than just plan tap water. And no more recycling cans!

  32. Connie G says:

I love the Pampered Chef small micro cooker! Use it all the time!!! Thanks for sharing this list. Enjoyed looking everything up!

  33. Teresa says:

Besides my slow cooker ( which I could not live without!) would be my rice cooker. Mine has the steamer on top so I can steam the veggies at the same time. 30 minutes and supper is on the table with NO work! Love, love, LOVE IT!

  34. Jodi V says:

Thanks for posting the products. Great to get your feedback!

  35. I agree with you about Instagram being a happy place! And yes, Harlow and Sage are soooo cute. I want that new puppy!!!!

I’d have to say my favorite non-crafty organizer item is this pull-out spice rack: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002I2OBIU/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B002I2OBIU&linkCode=as2&tag=thecrosta-20&linkId=7JSH55DBUEMPFZ3A

There was one in the house when I bought it, and it’s so great, several of my friends have bought it, too!

  36. Katherine says:

I’m so anxious to try your pillow. I have terrible problems with my neck and no pillow ever seems right for me.
I have the Aroma rice cooker that you use and it is a gem. Having an extended family that is mostly Japanese I’ve always had a rice cooker and I love the features that this one includes.

Thanks for sharing your always wonderful ideas!

My Zojiruchi rice cooker. Love, love, love it.

Jennifer you’re like the Ophra of the craft universe!! I believe everything you say and want everything you recommend! I want to be Jennifer!! Lol!! I am scrapping my Christmas list and instead going with everything on this post!! Ok so im exaggerating but I am sincerely interested in just about everything. First stop the Oils! I’ve been on the fence about them for awhile but now I am convinced. Thanks for all the goodness you’ve shared! This was an awesome post!

  40. Tamara says:

I love the skinnytaste site you recommended. Thanks for this giveaway! Tamara

  41. Barb says:

I love the brother label maker as well. Never knew about the chain print. I will definitely use that option.

  42. Lee Anne Owens says:

I would be lost without my vaccum sealer in my kitchen. We are a small family of just 3 adults but i can still take advantage of the lower price per pound by buying the larger bulk sized packs of meat since i can repackage them in small sized packages.

  43. Pam Goes says:

I so love following your blog & You Tube channel. I have bought so many items to try. And I just downloaded the Ad block, based on your recommendation! 🙂 Thank you for all your generous sharing and I look forward to see what comes in 2015!

  44. Joyce M. says:

Thanks for showing your favorite things. I am going to go check them out.

  45. Phyllis Freese says:

You show some great products here. We bought a vacuum sealer for our meat to keep it fresher longer while in the freezer and for vegetables fresh from the garden.

  46. Cristina Zadroga says:

By far I love my Dyson vacuum (we’ve had it for almost 10 years and it is still going strong) and all things IKEA. My whole house is practically from that store. What I really love is that when we moved to a bigger house I was able to add on to our book cases and everything matches!!

  47. Barbara Leonard says:

My favorite non-crafty thing (among others) is my bread machine. It’s wonderful to wake up to the smell of bread baking. So handy & easy for those who don’t have the time to mix, knead, rise, etc.

  48. Jennifer says:

Those are some great “favorites” and I will certainly be checking out many of them. Thank you!

  49. Bobbie Lathrop says:
