Crafting On The Go + GIVEAWAY

Hi! In My Favorite Crafty Things Series (which will be back soon), I showed several cards I made at a crafting retreat. Many people asked for more info on those cards, so I decided to put together a video. At the same time, I thought I would share some tips about crafting when away from home. (I do that a lot!)

While at a retreat, I die cut, stamped, and colored many “card elements.” When I got home, I simply put them on different all-white, textured backgrounds. And boy was that fun! I used dies for my backgrounds, but you could always do white-on-white heat embossing with stamps instead. Creating many cards like this is a great way to use any supplies you have been wanting to use. And the designs are simple… so no need for any mojo. 🙂

LAYERING BACKGROUND DIES

Here are several cards I created with the amazing Birch Press Layering Dies. These die sets are pricey (they include THREE background dies) but are fun, versatile, and a perfect thing to ask from Santa. 🙂 I *love* white-on-white, layered, die cut backgrounds. So classy!

This first one features the Birch Press Dazzle Layering Die Set – a favorite of mine. I added a Penny Black Manger die cut with a Hero Arts Mini Christmas white embossed sentiment. And lots of Clear Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pen…

112216-white15-jennifer-mcguire-ink

Using the same Birch Press Dazzle Layering Die Set, I added a panel with a Taylored Expressions Nativity die cut and Gina K Home For Holidays sentiment. Such a great message!

112216-white2-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I also really like the Birch Press Sevilla Layered background. So much detail! I added an Avery Elle Ornamental die cut along with a Avery Elle Merriest sentiment…

112216-white1-jennifer-mcguire-ink

Sometimes coloring outline images just takes too long… and you can save time by going with a tone-on-tone coloring instead. I colored in the Wplus9 Holiday Houses with a Clear Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pen and it is gorgeous in real life. The sentiment is from the Poppy Stamps Christmas Greetings Stamp Set and the background features the Birch Press Tilter Layering Dies.

112216-white14-jennifer-mcguire-ink

For a more playful look, I used the Birch Press Circa Layered Dies for the background and a sentiment from the great new Amy Tangerine Cheers Stamp Set. That heart is from the new Hero Arts Hearts Infinity Die Set – more on that below…

112216-white-jennifer-mcguire-ink

This next card makes me smile. The Birch Press Delfina Layering background is so beautiful and the Pink and Main Oh Deer Stamps fox is adorable! I also added a sentiment from the Your Next Stamp Cool Banner Stamp Set…

112216-white7-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I am always making cards for teachers – I never seem to have enough. Therefore the Reverse Confetti All Apples Stamp Set is one I reach for often. I added the apple to a classic Birch Press Honeybee Layering background. Such a quick card to pull together…

112216-white4-jennifer-mcguire-ink

… and another with the Birch Press Maxwell Layering background…

112216-white13-jennifer-mcguire-ink

You can also get a layered look using single background dies. Here, I added a white Hero Arts Star Confetti Die Cut Background panel to the front of a white card with foam adhesive and the results are incredible! That Your Next Stamp Magical Unicorn was the perfect addition and such fun to color. Oh – and the sentiment is from Concord & 9th Kindhearted Stamp Set…

112216-white8-jennifer-mcguire-ink

This next card features the same Hero Arts Star Confetti Die Cut Background along with stamped images from the My Favorite Things Merry Everything Stamp Set…

112216-white6-jennifer-mcguire-ink

The Hero Arts Circle Confetti Die also works great for quick backgrounds. I used it for a “snow” feel, but it can be a “party” background too. I just adhered it flat onto the background without foam adhesive so there would be less bulk. The skating cutie and sentiment are from the My Favorite Things Polar Bears Stamp Set. And by the way – I added shimmer to the sentiment strip too…

112216-white9-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I just love this snowman from the Mommy Lhey Doodled Sweater Stamp Set. And the sentiment? I can’t get enough of it! Will use all year round.

112216-white10-jennifer-mcguire-ink

IMPRESSED BACKGROUNDS

Another way to use background dies is to use them with an embossing pad to create an impression. The texture is wonderful! All you need to do is sandwich your paper between a Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mat and a background die and run it through your die cut machine as you would an embossing folder.

The Lil Inker Tribal Chic Die is great for making impressions using a Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mat… and makes a perfect backdrop for this Reverse Confetti Bear Hugs koala cutie. The sentiment is from My Favorite Things Essential Sentiments Stamp Set…

112216-white12-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I also used a Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mat to impress the Reverse Confetti All Framed Up Dies for this next background. I really like how these dies can be used together or separate. And there is that fantastic Amy Tangerine Cheers sentiment again…

112216-white5-jennifer-mcguire-ink

EMBOSSING FOLDERS

Embossing folders are also great for quick backgrounds. For this first card, I used the new Sizzix Leaves 3D Embossing Folder for a fun, textured look. I again used an adorable Reverse Confetti Bear Hugs koala image along with a Your Next Stamp Cool Banner sentiment.

112216-white3-jennifer-mcguire-ink

And for another embossed background, I used the Sizzix Woven 3D Embossing Folder. I really like that Your Next Stamp Silly Monsters Stamp Set! And the fun sentiment is from the Waffle Flower Purse-nality Stamp Set…

112216-white18-jennifer-mcguire-ink

FRAME BACKGROUNDS

Another fun way to add interest to a simple card background is to use a frame.

Here, I added a Avery Elle Postage Stamp Die frame with foam adhesive. It seemed the perfect showcase for the perfect Neat and Tangled Little Baby Jesus Stamps.

112216-white11-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I hope these bundle of cards inspire you to create colored elements on-the-go… and to add them to white textured backgrounds. It is fun!

CRAFTING ON-THE-GO… FOR A GOOD CAUSE

I very often take my crafting on-the-go… airplanes, baseball games, car rides, etc. I had been looking for a very long time for the perfect, compact crafty bag. And I am thrilled to say I finally found it! I use the Hanging Traveler Case from Thirty-One Gifts. I show a closer look in the video, but I like it for many reasons. It is compact and completely zips closed so nothing falls out. It has several pockets and even spots for markers. You can even get it personalized. (I plan to get a couple more with personalization.) I am so happy to finally find the perfect on-to-go crafting bag!

If you are interested in ordering one, you can get it HERE. My friend Stephanie sells it via Thirty-One Gifts. I will earn credits from any sales of this bag (or any of their products) via HERE by 12/7/2016… and we will use ALL of the credits to purchase Thirty-One totes that we will fill with female “stuff” and donate to a shelter. What a great way to give back this holiday season!

If you are purchasing, you can also check out her other stuff. I also like the Tall Organizing Tote for bigger crafting on-the-go… and the Utility Totes for carrying big stuff around and for grocery store runs. Oh – and they have some great specials right now, too. Just be sure you are shopping under “Jennifer McGuire’s 31 Soiree” so we make sure all credits go to the pouches for donations. Thank you!

Thirty-One ships in US. If you are international and want to learn more, please contact Stephanie. She is the best!

HEARTS… FOR A GOOD CAUSE

I have said many times that I think Hero Arts is the best company out there. Their generosity and integrity impresses me over and over. So… when I approached them and suggested that they release their Nesting Hearts Infinity Dies early and donate a portion of the sales, they said yes! Please check out the hearts that are exclusively available HERE. (They will be in stores in mid-December.) For a limited time, Hero Arts will donate 25% off the profits of the Nesting Hearts Infinity Dies to The Kind Campaign to help fight bullying. Awesome, huh? You can get your set HERE – it is a good one!

Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful techniques and products. I especially like the Birch Press Dazzle Layering Die Set. I use embossing folders and dies when making many of my cards.

  2. Diann :) says:

Wow .. great cards and helpful techniques! Thank you, Jennifer.
I am loving the Dazzle and Delfina dies and love the Leaves embossing folder.
I typically use embossing folders for backgrounds but am looking through my dies to discover backgrounds. 🙂

  3. Sharon Jones says:

I really like embossing folders as a background to add texture but I really love the Birch Press background dies–they are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing your ideas. Your cards are so nice.

  4. dancingcat says:

My favorite background technique so far is Clarity Stamp brushes, I get much better results with them ( I tend to be heavy handed, which doesn’t always work well with with the foam disks). Definitely love the Birch Press dies, just out of my price range. Love MFT, that reindeer is adorable!!

  5. I really enjoyed learning about the impressed technique with dies! This opened my eyes to new ways to use my dies. Thank you Jennifer for your inspiration, I love seeing what you share!

  6. Judy Estrada says:

To be honest I really did not know about layering background dies. I like the looks of those cards with the layering die cut backgrounds. I normally use an embossing folder background or a patterned paper background. I also sometimes just frame my sentiments or main focal point with card stock borders just a little larger. Thank you for sharing your videos all year long.

  7. Debbie Petersen says:

I love doing layered backgrounds but I have a lot of embossing folders and this reminded me to pull them out and use them!

  8. CHRISTINE J says:

I am loving the background dies that are out now. Oh the wonderful possibilities are endless.

  9. Laura budke says:

I like to use embossing folders to create my backgrounds. Also, fun prints and tone on tone stamping.

  10. Donna Lewis says:

These backgrounds are gorgeous. My favourite backgrounds are watercolour smooshed.

  11. Tammie says:

Great cards J! My fav background technique is embossing folders and paper layering. Easy and high impact.

  12. LibLady says:

I think I probably use plain white more often than not, but do like using Distress inks on occasion.

  13. SusanDR says:

I love the texture of embossing, but your layering technique is one I am going to have to try!

  14. barbara lassiter says:

I loved all the background techniques you show cased in this video and I’m sure to try some of them. I use embossing folders, for that perfect touch, on a card when I’m having a little trouble with how to finish a card and that’s probably my favorite of these techniques. I saw two Sizzix folders (leaves and woven) today that think I need! LOL! 🙂

  15. Shirley A Conner says:

Jennifer, do you ever sleep? *smile* All of these cards are beautiful. You have such a unique way of putting your cards together. Thank you once again for a very informative video!

  16. Isabelle says:

Thank you again for all these great tips !

  17. I love the hanging travel bag idea!! What a perfect bag for crafting “on the go”! Thanks for sharing Hero Arts stacking hearts. I love all your caring and sharing!

  18. Iris Esther López says:

Beautiful cards and so simple. All I have for backgrounds right now is background stamps but would love to have some of those Birch Press dies.

  19. susan hatfield says:

I like using embossing folders but now that I have seen your techniques I’ll have to save up for one of those sets. I really like your cards and your ideas for crafting away from home.

  20. Diane says:

I love using embossing folders for a quick and easy background! But those Birch Press dies NEED to be in my stash as another alternative background! Love them!!!

  21. scrapinator says:

I generally like to make scene cards so the backgrounds are the scene themselves, if I’m not doing scene card I like to do some kind of texture and color. For color, I like to use a colored cardstock and for texture, embossing folders or dies. But I have to say I’m blown away by the Birch Press Dies and would love to add a couple to my collection. I will be adding them to my birthday wish list. Santa has finished shopping for me, hahaha. So maybe for my birthday on Valentine’s Day I’ll receive a couple, LOL! Thanks for an awesome giveaway!

  22. Awesome samples, I now know what to do with all those images that I have collected that I’ve stamped and colored in but are waiting to be put on a card. My favorite background technique is ink blending. But I really want to expand to other things like using the many embossing folders I’ve collected but forget to use.

  23. Ckneuendorf says:

I love love love these new Birch Press layering dies. They are so unique and create the most elegant background when done in white on white! Think my favorite is the dazzle but really like them all. They are expensive but like that you can combine them in different ways too. Thanks for more inspiration!!

  24. Pam Hammarlund says:

Do you need to add more postage to the envelopes because of the thickness?

  25. RebeccaL says:

I enjoy ink blending for backgrounds and I can see how that would combine beautifully with the layering dies.

  26. Steggy says:

Thanks, as always, for your posts and videos. They’ve helped re-ignite my passion for paper crafting that has been dormant for too long. My favorite background technique has always been color with embossing folders coming a close second. However, your white on white cards are inspiring me to give that a whirl!

  27. Evelyn says:

These dies from Birch Press are gorgeous. I tend to use my stamps and dies for my backgrounds. Embossing folders and stencils are usually a second choice.

  28. Beth Ross says:

Jennifer, if I ever feel my mono waning all I have to do is watch your videos!!! You are truly amazing!
I am in love with the Birch Press die sets! And I agree, the white on white is clean and smart.

    Huge hugs!

  29. Anne says:

I love all your cards! You are so blessed having so many craft products in America available to you! Love a lot of those stamps and those layering dies! Oh my! I like using versamark ink and stamping on a dark cardstock to give a subtle watermark background.

  30. Janelle says:

My simple go-to has been embossing folders, but you have inspired me to use background stamps and heat emboss the image, as well as trying watercolor backgrounds. I treated myself to my first full cover die in the Black Friday sales. Thanks for your long list for our shopping pleasure.

  31. Michelle C says:

These layered background die sets are so fun!!! I love blending my background with distress inks but this looks like a new favourite!

  32. Kim k says:

Hi Jennifer. I really like how you show us so many ways to use our products and expose us to great new ones as they become available. I am in love with the Birch Press layering dies. Thank you so much for the chance to win one. At this time of year there is nothing left in the crafting budget. Happy holidays to you and yours and many blessings wished for you in the coming year.

  33. scrapper al says:

Those background dies are amazing! I like using embossing folders to add texture to my cards. A question about the bag. Since the bag is soft, do you have any issues with with corners bending on your paper?

  34. Metty says:

Great ideas! Thanks so much, as always.

  35. June Donoflio says:

I love the Delfina Birch Press Laying Die set. It makes a beautiful card. But the price is very high. Do you think they will be coming down on the price or maybe a sale in the future? My crafting budget is very limited.

  36. Marlyn Rojas says:

    I like stencil backgrounds.

  37. Sandi R says:

I love a water color background but because I’m really not good at water color I usually do a dry embossed background

  38. Jane S says:

I have 2 favorites for backgrounds —– die cuts and embossing folders. I love that Birch Dazzle die! Thanks for sharing your awesome cards!

  39. KT Fit Kitty says:

These are all brilliant! My favorite background for quick cards is using an embossing folder. Those Birch Press dies look amazing and I would be over the moon to win. You get so many comments so I know I don’t have a chance but I will still try! Thank you!

  40. Diane says:

Wow, so many beautiful cards and backgrounds. Thanks for the chance to win.

  41. TraciB says:

This is so timely, since I will be away from home over the holidays. Thanks for all the good tips. I love watercolor backgrounds; but dies run a close second.

  42. Suzanne says:

I can’t wait to look through my stash to see which dies I can use for backgrounds. These cards are so simple and beautiful. I love the white on white … and your idea for the shelter donation!

  43. Linda says:

Thanks so very much for this! Would love to see more videos about how you pack for a crafting retreat. I do this several times a year with friends and always feel I’m taking everything including the kitchen sink! What does packing for a 3 day weekend with crafting friends look like for you? Do you take your Big Shot with you, how do you pack up ink, stamps, and dies? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

  44. Jennifer, I don’t know whether to thank you or not for introducing me to Birch Press layering dies! They look awesome! And just my style…sigh…should I get another job? Rent my kids out for yard work? Whatever it takes!

  45. Becky Kavanagh says:

Love these ideas and layered dies! For quick backgrounds to build from I like embossing, particularly if I’m doing a lot of cards at one time to make up sets. Thanks for all the inspiration in your videos!

  46. Gail Anderson says:

Wow, stunning cards! I love the layered background dies. I tend to use my embossing folders for backgrounds the most. (I have so many!) Although, I also like to use background stamps.

  47. thanks for the idea of the bag and use our stamps to take with us for colouring them on the go super

  48. Renae says:

My favorite would be the white on white background layering technique.

  49. Monika/buzsy says:

Fantastic techniques for backgrounds Jennifer. I love them all. I like distress water colored backgrounds… quick and words great… I also love cover plates… I have a bunch of embossing folders, but I haven’t used them for a while. The framed background looks amazing with the baby Jesus image! Thanks for the chance to win! I love those birch press layering dies!

  50. Ochiyo K says:

I love the Birch Press Circa Layered Dies with the Nesting Hearts Infinity Dies. So cute and so many ways to use them both. Thank you for the video!
