Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

The technique of double-die cutting is genius – I never thought of that to expand my die collection! Great tutorial, thanks. I have made some place settings, votive holders, wreaths with paper leaves, and several signs. The Dollar Tree has fab, cheap materials for these types of things. Thanks again, Jennifer!

I used to love to make ornaments during the holidays with my first graders when I was teaching- I know I have some very old (!) ornaments I made as a child!

  23. Emma D says:

Gorgeous decorations! Over the past couple of years I’ve made quite a few Christmas decorations and each year seems to have a theme to it! 2 years ago – the year of the felt. Last year it was origami. This year it seems to be paper crafts. Have to say, my favourite is the first thing I made, a felt gingerbread man now known as “Jack” because of the button on his waistcoat! 😉

  24. The leaves decor are just beautiful!!! I always make my holiday wreaths and cards. I don’t know when was the last time I bought something like that or close to that.
    Have a blessed day,

  29. Dianna Elliott says:

Hi Jennifer, What a perfect way to stamp so many leaves!! I made large shamrocks with a greeting and ribbon for the patients at an extended care facility my daughter works for. I truly got burnt out making them as the facility wanted me to make one for all patients instead of the ones on my daughters wing. 190 shamrocks later I was seeing green to say the least : ) I can see how helpful the Misti is and didn’t know it even existed until I found your sight.
Thank you for all the fun sharing you do and God Bless
    Dianna

  30. Jody V says:

Yes. I make handmade decorations for many family events. Not just the holidays. We hold 25 Anniversary parties for all of my 10 brother in laws and sister in laws. The tables are usually full of handmade decorations. The family Baptisms and First birthdays are usually a big celebration too with many handmade decorations and take home treats. Thanks for the chance to win a Misti. It would be a marvelous help preparing for these large events. Thanks.

  31. Katy says:

I tried one year but my family wasn’t into it. I’m going to try again this year with the leaves. I think they are precious. Wish me luck…hahaha! Stay blessed!

  32. Laura Whitaker says:

Back when I only had 6-7 nieces and nephews I made them each personalized Christmas ornaments. I haven’t done it in years. I need to start again for my granddaughter and great-nieces and nephews. Thanks for reminding me.

  33. Sissyc says:

What a beautiful idea. Thanks for a chance to win.

  34. Connie R says:

I try to make a decoration for the holiday table each year. Lots of times it is something to place on the dinner plate with the napkin or a little gift of candy wrapped up in some way to serve as a placecard and take home gift in one. Thanks for the great give away! Congrats to the winner!!

  35. Laura Holt says:

Now that my kids are grown, I’ve not been “into” making ornaments , but now I’m tempted!

  36. Amy R says:

Love your videos and all your helpful and fun tips!
As children we use to make salt dough ornaments with my Mom for our tree and place settings.
It was always fun and a great keepsake now that we are older!
    Amy

  37. Kathy Rudolph says:

It’s a joy to watch your creativity shine in your videos. But what I enjoy most is your many tips for getting the most out of the supplies we may already have. This double die cutting technique is a winner! I’d already purchased the stitched leaf from SSS. How great that I can make even smaller leaves using the same die….I’d never thought of using it in this way. Thank you for once again inspiring us!

  38. Roseann Boyle says:

Jennifer how generous of you I’m sure that teacher really appreciated having all those beautiful mats for her dinner party. I once made every ornament to decorate a 7ft xmas tree, it was beautiful and well worth the work.

  39. Karen P says:

I create pretty settings on our table at Christmas. It’s when we all get together and it makes it that little bit more special. Thank you so much for the chance of winning a Misti Jennifer I would love to have one of them because I’m having so many issues with my hands and they will get worse as I get older. However wanted to let you know that I am international (UK) so you might want to remove my details as the P&P might be very high. I am going to check out this die cutting technique that is new to me and watch the video next.
Your leaves are beautiful and I bet the teacher will love what you have created for her. It is rare, special, precious and wonderfully kind to take the time to create something lovely for another person just because you think they deserve it. Thanks for sharing Karen x

  40. Dottie J says:

I always hand-make Christmas decorations and have for years. My Christmas tree is like a timeline of our life as a family. I keep a running list of the ornaments, the year made (or received as a gift), any special meaning or occasion. Just a scribble list on notebook paper that lives in the top of the ornament box, not pretty or detailed, but definitely chronological.
My daughter and I always schedule one weekend in November to work together making gifts and ornaments. Now, we’ve added a time to make ornaments with her children, too.

  41. nana griffin says:

I have made handmade decorations for the holidays but since the children are all older I haven’t been lately. I do enjoy it though and every once in awhile will make a ornament for the tree.

  42. Donna says:

Hi Jennifer. I haven’t made decorations for a while but I love making cards. Thanks for sharing your creativity and the opportunity to win a Misti. Donna

  43. Janet D, says:

Oh yes! 🙂 I make handmade decorations for most holidays, but especially Christmas. Thanks for the inspiration, because these place settings are fantastic!

  44. Jodi V says:

I haven’t made too many decorations… I usually focus on making cards!!

  45. Charlotte Ross says:

Thanks for the place card idea! I can’t wait to try it. I enjoy making wreaths for the fall. We also painted acorns this year. I put them in a glass vase. My middle daughter loves getting decor ideas from Pinterest. We have our Hobby Lobby list all ready with supplies for Christmas DIY!

  46. Loyce Shurling says:

Looking back I realize I have been making holiday decorations and treats for almost 40 years. Without fail I find myself stumped for a new idea each time. Then miraculously something clicks and I am off and running. I’m now working on items for family, my quilt group, and my mother’s nursing home unit. Fortunately I can make the same item for them all.
Thanks to Sweet Petunia for such a fine giveaway.

  47. cindi says:

I hand make all my cards and that is usually all I have time for!

  48. Michelle O. says:

I remember making gifts in school when I was young – something I hope to do in the future when my own kinds come along someday!

  49. Lee says:

What a great idea for place cards. I do hand knitting and card making for friends and family. I love the look on their faces when they receive something handmade. It is so gratifying.

  50. stamplady says:
