Video: Ink for Beginning Stampers + GIVEAWAY

I am often asked which inks I recommend for new stampers. This is a tough question and I have spent a lot of time thinking about it over the years. And today? I finally have an answer…

[All supplies are linked to multiple sources in the thumbnails at the end of this post. Affiliate links used. To watch the video in HD on YouTube, click HERE.]

I consider three things to be important when considering ink for a new stamper: the quality, the colors, and the ease at which you can get good, solid results. Today’s inks are great on all three counts! In my video, I suggest “a collection of beginner inks” that includes Lawn Fawn and Ranger Dye Inks. Both of these inks are new and have impressed me big time.

The Lawn Fawn colors are rich-yet-muted-mid-tones. The Ranger colors are bright-and-primary. Together? A great collection of 20 inks. (I left out black inks from this – was just focusing on the colors.)

Be sure to watch the above video to understand more about these inks and how they work. And *please* remember – there are lots of other inks I love just as much as these! So be sure to watch THIS video about my other favorite inks. For example – I *love* Hero Arts Shadow Inks, WPlus9 Inks, various pigment inks, etc. and use them most. I adore their unique colors. However I felt the inks I share today are a great place to start to get basic colors. Then you can starting adding in the other great ink lines! (The more the merrier, huh?)

Please check above for a comparison between the colors. Keep in mind that every computer screen is different.

By the way, if you would like to better understand the difference between ink types, check out THIS video.

Things for the info. I don’t have many inks, just a few Hero Arts.

  3. Lucille K says:

Thank you for the video Jennifer. Although not a beginner, I always learn something new 🙂

  4. Quyen says:

I like to use pigment inks because I can emboss on them, but recently I started to collect more die ink too. Thanks for the chance to win, Jen! You are the best!

  5. Lisa Chin says:

I have been building up my collection of distress inks, especially since the minis came out as I can use them in multiple ways and LOVE the way they blend, but I too am looking to expand my collection of dye inks but have been confused since MFT came out with hybrid inks, now Simon Says Stamps has new mini hybrids. It’s just an explosion of colourful options out there, so thanks for narrowing the lense and letting me focus a bit.

  6. msclaratam says:

Never try this ink yet but would like to have one to try.

  7. Marianne says:

I’ve been expanding my collection of dye inks last year, but I’m not getting the crisp results i was hoping for. Even the HA inks remain splotchy. I get better results with Memento Dew drops, but only have a few colours. These new inks do look amazing, both as a colour range and the crisp results you seem to be getting.

  8. Amanda W. says:

I’m currently loving pigment inks. It’s bright and you can emboss but I do have to make sure that I don’t smug.

  9. Carlie says:

Although I am an avid cardmaker, I have never stamped before. I am looking forward to trying it out and seeing what I like the best! Thanks for your help Jennifer!

  10. Indy says:

I so need more experience with different ink products. I mostly own Distress Inks. I definitely need to branch out!

    Love your videos!

  15. ShakeItUp26 says:

My favorite ink so far has been the Memento Tuxedo Black – I’ve been using it while coloring with Copics. I just recently started purchasing the Distress Ink minis and am loving them for all the techniques. Would love to try some of the Lawn Fawn inks too!

  16. Miriam says:

Thank you. Very helpful video. I am new to stamping so don’t have a favorite.

  21. GHL says:

Thanks to you I discovered Hero Arts shadow inks, I bought many of their mini sets and I love them. I also like Colorbox. I use Memento for Copic coloring although it doesn’t stamp sharp enough sometimes, I’m about to try MFT Hybrid for that purpose. For sharp detail nothing beats Versafine Onyx Black. Hero Arts Unicorn White is the best white ink. And for techniques, I’m beginning to play with Distress inks. And last but not least, the indispensable Versamark for embossing. I think you chose two great sets, I like the Lawn Fawn colors but I love the sharpness and vibrancy of the Ranger line. Thanks for the chance to win!

  22. AlyssaM says:

I’m a beginner and have used Staz on, momento and Ranger archival but my favorite to work with has to be distress.

  23. Alie says:

My favorite type of ink for the moment is Momento black ink, I also like the Distress inks. Thank you for your posts, I really enjoy learning from you Jennifer!

  24. Olive M says:

I love distress inks, and most of my inks fall into that category, but I have a few others in various brands, mostly Memento. I’ll have to check out some of these colors, love the purples especially. Thanks for all the useful info.

  25. Jean M says:

For me it’s a toss up between SSS and Hero Arts. But then I haven’t tried either of these new inks yet.

  26. Jen V. says:

Although they are the only ones I own besides a black memento ink pad, Distress inks are by far my favorite!

  27. Leah Saunders says:

I love Distress inks but then again I have never tried Lawn Fawn or Ranger inks. Some amazing colors to add to my never ending wish list! Thanks for sharing all your expertise!

  28. Amanda says:

I have to say that you provide some of the most informative videos related to crafts and art supplies here on youtube. Thank you for taking the time out to share your tips, tricks, and favorites. I have to admit that I do not have many colored dye inks. I do have some of the distress inks, which I am in love with. Right now my all time favorite ink is archival watering can. There are not too many grey inks available and I find myself reaching for it time after time.

  29. KGB says:

I’m fairly new to stamping, although I have been accumulating stamps, inks, etc. for years. I have mostly used pigment inks such as Colorbox. However, after watching several of your videos, I am excited to try Hero Arts dye inks and Tim Holtz distress inks. I’m currently awaiting a few that I’ve ordered and am sure that I’ll fall in love and be buying more soon! (I might have a bit of a problem amassing crafting supplies…)

  30. Joyce yang says:

I like shadow ink, simon says stamps dye ink, and momento black ink the most.

I enjoy mama elephant pigment ink as well!

  31. Natalie Giron says:

I love Rangers color choices!! This is a must buy!!

  32. Janene Levario says:

  33. Vina b says:

I like distress inks and shadow inks from hero arts.

  34. Siobhan Burtlow says:

I’d love some Jennifer Blog love to try out some Simon ink from Simon Says Stamp!

    Thanks so much!

  35. MonaSWE says:

I like dye-based inks that don’t stain my stamps so Memento dew drops are my favorite but I would stay away from SSS dye ink pads because of the discoloration. Thanks

  36. Sara Miller says:

So far I only have dye inks from Papertrey Ink. I’d love to try out these bright colors from Hero Arts!

  37. CherieV says:

I haven’t had much opportunity to try a lot of pigment inks, but I do love my trusty VersaColor mini cubes. They last forever – I don’t do a huge amount of stamping and I’ve had some of mine for 4+ years and they haven’t dried out. I find the texture nice and predictable and they work well with all of my stamps and their size makes them perfect for multicolour stamping (before I discovered masking!). In the past year or so, I’ve also discovered distress inks and I’m loving using these and trying out different techniques – so versatile!

  38. Jennifer B says:

Love hero Arts and Memnto but want to try the new Ranger dye inks now!! Thanks Jen!!

  39. Billi-Jo says:

I’m only new to stamping so I’m still trying different inks but so far I really like versafine onyx black. Thanks!!
