Video: Ink for Beginning Stampers + GIVEAWAY

I am often asked which inks I recommend for new stampers. This is a tough question and I have spent a lot of time thinking about it over the years. And today? I finally have an answer…

[All supplies are linked to multiple sources in the thumbnails at the end of this post. Affiliate links used. To watch the video in HD on YouTube, click HERE.]

I consider three things to be important when considering ink for a new stamper: the quality, the colors, and the ease at which you can get good, solid results. Today’s inks are great on all three counts! In my video, I suggest “a collection of beginner inks” that includes Lawn Fawn and Ranger Dye Inks. Both of these inks are new and have impressed me big time.

The Lawn Fawn colors are rich-yet-muted-mid-tones. The Ranger colors are bright-and-primary. Together? A great collection of 20 inks. (I left out black inks from this – was just focusing on the colors.)

Be sure to watch the above video to understand more about these inks and how they work. And *please* remember – there are lots of other inks I love just as much as these! So be sure to watch THIS video about my other favorite inks. For example – I *love* Hero Arts Shadow Inks, WPlus9 Inks, various pigment inks, etc. and use them most. I adore their unique colors. However I felt the inks I share today are a great place to start to get basic colors. Then you can starting adding in the other great ink lines! (The more the merrier, huh?)

Please check above for a comparison between the colors. Keep in mind that every computer screen is different.

By the way, if you would like to better understand the difference between ink types, check out THIS video.

I am fairly new to stamping so have really only used Simon Says Inks…it would be great to be able to afford the postage so I can try some more 🙂

  2. Anne from France says:

I only have a few ink of different types and makes but I would love to get a good range of colours and consistency. Your colour swatches and video are great and so helpful! Thank you for taking the time to do this. I usually go for pigment inks because they remain very workable, you can push them around & clean up the pad easily if they get contaminated. My stamping friend was aghast that I use them! My favs are Brilliance pearlescent, such colours, such shimmer!

  3. Erika Hayes says:

  8. Donna Gagnon says:

I have used Distress inks, Hero Arts, Avery Elle, Mementoluxe I like them all for different reasons. It really depends on the card you are making. But I think I use the Hero arts inks the most. I like the colors in the Avery Elle line. All inks that I have are great.

  9. Sarah says:

Those inks look so good together! Wish I had a bigger craft room so I could have them all! 🙂

  10. Jean says:

I have been looking for a new ink to use. I’m just not happy with what I’m using now.
BTW. I love watching your videos. Thanks for the inspiration.

  11. Tanja S. says:

I have a few faves depending on what i am using them for. I like chalk ink, but find pads dry up quicker than other ink types. I also like Tsukineko dew drops and PTI inks.

  12. Becky says:

I can’t believe I don’t own any coloured inks! I used to have tons that were given to me by my nan when she passed away. I so need to start collecting again! I love the look of the Ranger dye inks, Lawn Fawn inks and the Avery Elle ones as they all have great vibrant colours and I’ve just purchased some Distress Inks from my local Hobbycraft to have a play with so I’m looking forward to that! Would love to have a craft room as I’m confined to my bedroom floor at the moment and there’s only so much space! Thank you for the amazing opportunity x

  13. maryann says:

do you think Ranger will come out with minis for this line of ink? limited space in my craft room and would love to own more ink colors.

  14. Jenn says:

I have some memento inks but I have not really used them. I mostly use black inks but have been driving myself crazy trying to figure out what to get to branch out a bit.

  22. Melissa H says:

I am a definite stamping/card making newbie and so far have a really small collection of the hero arts cubes. I would LOVE to win the gift certificate! Thanks for the opportunity.

  23. Rachel says:

I simply love colour inks…It really depends on the card I am making which kind I use. But I think I use pigment inks the most perfect for embossing. but would love to get some lawn fawn or ranger distress inks their colours seem so vibrant and beautiful.

  24. Carla says:

If I had to pick one favorite ink it would be a pigment ink. When I first started stamping I always purchased “line” stamps, so I could stamp, emboss, color, or I could use versamark for chalks. I still like pigment ink just because it’s slow to dry. It can be smeared on for backgrounds, stamped, embossed for use as a resist. Plus, it won’t stain my stamps. I do like dye ink for the brighter tone you achieve, and you don’t have to wait forever for your sentiment to dry.

  25. Jeannie King says:

I’m fairly new to this, so am experimenting with both pigment and dye inks – I can’t really say that I like one or the other better – I am using a few of the distress inks and they seem to fit my “style” of rustic designs. Thank you for all the videos you share – they really help me to learn.

  26. Cora says:

At this point my favorite ink is distress ink from ranger. So versatile!

  27. Fay Salkus says:

Now I have my MISTI I plan to do more stamping so I want more pads. Thanks for the advice.

  28. Ileana says:

Thank YOU. I’m one of the beginners that asks for information like this all the time. Keep em’ coming. I not only save all the videos, but I write notes in a notebook that goes along with every video. If anyone has a different system, please let me know.

  29. Joany says:

It’s hard to say my favorite type of ink, I sadly don’t have the income to buy many but I would probably say I truly enjoyed rangers “Distress ink” it is so versatile and can be used for so many different things, you can stamp, dye photos, watercolor and so on I absolutely love it! I saw those lawn fawn inks a month or two ago And have been in love with the colors! Want them all so bad but i don’t really have any extra income to use on crafting. Thanks for this awesome and informative video and also for such a cool giveaway. Good luck everyone!

  30. Brandy says:

I love all Hero Arts inks! I love how they look splotchy in the beginning and then after a little time they are perfectly smooth!

  31. Barb says:

I use Hero Art dye inks and love Staz-On for projects other than paper.

  32. Delphine says:

I use mostly dye inks and distress inks but I also like pigment inks because they’re bright and vivids. One I really like to use is… Versamark ink! so versatile… love to use it for muted effects or embossing 🙂 thanks for the chance to play

  33. Dianne Guilinger says:

for stamping and coloring I use mostly memento inks, plus ranger distress pads . This is a fabulous prize! Thank you so much for your wonderful videos, I watch them all. I would like to use more colored inks, but am not quite sure what to do with them.

  34. Marta says:

I don’t have a favorite type because I’m still trying to start this cardmaking hobby, but I really like those Ranger inks you showed us.

  35. bethann d says:

I wish I could afford all the inks and other products I would love to have but that just isn’t possible. the inks look yummy

  36. Shannon says:

I have two sad little inks for Michael’s because they were cheap and I don’t know what I am doing. Thanks for information. Help me!

  37. Lisa Smith says:

This was a MUCH needed video for me! I have stamps, I have ink pads, but they don’t go together too well! I haven’t been doing a lot of paper art until the last year. I started getting the distress ink pads which I like for a lot of things, but stamping with them left me really disappointed. I had a couple of cheap ink pads that weren’t much better. I recently tried versamark for my black stamping – and finally felt like “whew, got it right!” because it is the look I’m after. This post/video is going to be my go to for acquiring some ink pads that I’m hopeful I can have some success with! Thanks so much!

  38. angela says:

thank you for showing us what works and why 🙂

  39. Barbara says:

  41. beky4 says:

    HI
I love the most the dye inks from ranger, but I also love the distress ink by ranger.
Thanks for the chance to win this great giveaway.

  42. Peggy Boyd says:

I love your videos and must admit you’ve enabled me to buy more than one thing! I just can’t justify more ink though. Would love to try both these brands!!

  43. Marcie says:

I like the dye inks best because they dry more quickly.

  44. Erin Gengo says:

I think I use Distress Ink and Memento Dew Drops the most. I love the versatility of the Distress Ink and love the shape of the Memento Dew Drops for inking intricate stamps and stencils.

  45. Jenny D says:

I have a variety of different ink brands but seeing this post convinced me I need to buy both the Lawn Fawn and Ranger collections too. Oh well… I’m accepting my fate and coming along gracefully LOL!!

  46. Glorianne Lopez says:

Where I’m from they don’t sell Lawn Fawn in any of the retail stores. I have to buy everything online. I would love to try these ink pads!

  47. Jen B says:

Hi Jen, another great video, my favourite inks are Memento as they have some great colours and they are easy to get hold of in the UK. Would love to try some of the Lawn Fawn and Ranger inks though xx

  48. Lucy E. says:

    Thanks for this wonderful review!
Right now, my favorite inks are the TH/Ranger Distress Inks,
only because they are so easy to use. I never went
to a Stampin Up or Close to My Heart home class,
so I never had any directions or information on stamping
or inks. I do love the Memento Tuxedo Black for a
clean stamped image, especially if I’m going to color
the image with Copic markers or water color.
I have picked up some other ink pads by Tsuninko
and some of the Ranger dye inks, but I admit, I’m
not sure what/why certain inks are better than others.
Thanks for this informative video 🙂

  49. Jeanie P says:

I’m not a beginner, but still got a lot of value from this video ! Thanks so much. What would we do without you ?

  50. Suzanne E. says:

My favorite for many years was dye specifically Stampin Up but then a few years back I decided to get rid of most of my crafting supplies and my ink pads were the first to be sold. Now that I have been getting the desire to start using them again I’m having to try and figure out what brand/types to buy now.
