Distress Oxide Ink Watercolor + GIVEAWAY

Hello! I was very excited when the new Distress Oxide Inks came out last week… so I thought I would play with them right away! Today I show how these inks are excellent for doing watercolor on dark colored cardstock.

Distress Oxide Inks are simply incredible. Due to their unique properties, they are one-of-a-kind! If you haven’t already, please watch THIS Oxide Ink introduction video. It explains many of the great techniques these inks can do. (I link to other videos you might like below.)

Since Tim Holtz Distress Oxide inks have both dye AND pigment properties, they offer a very unique look when used for watercolor. The ink moves nicely with water (thanks to the dye ink properties).. but is somewhat opaque (thanks to the pigment ink properties). So when you paint with them, the “paint” is creamy… and can be used on dark cardstocks! LOVE this.

My first example shows watercoloring Distress Oxide Inks on Lawn Fawn Blue Jay Cardstock. After white heat embossing the flower from the Simon Says Stamp Beautiful Flowers Stamp Set, I pressed different colors of Oxide Inks onto my Tim Holtz Tonic Glass Media Mat and added a bit of water. Using a brush, I painted in the flowers as I always do for watercolor. You can mix colors… but even better… you can layer them to build up more intense color.

For this card I used Tumbled Glass, Broken China, Shaded Lilac, Blueprint Sketch, Seedless Preserves, Mowed Lawn, and Crushed Olive Distress Oxide Ink. Again, these inks are somewhat opaque, so the colors show up even on the dark cardstock. After adding the sentiment, I did spray the panel with Design Master Clear Finish Matte Spray to protect it.

By the way, the “hello” is from a discontinued stamp set.

My second example also uses the Simon Says Stamp Beautiful Flowers Stamp Set. However, this time I stamped it on kraft cardstock with VersaFine Onyx Black Ink and clear heat embossed. I then added lots of Distress Oxide Ink with water and a brush.

For this one I used Spun Sugar, Picked Raspberry, Squeezed Lemonade, Mustard Seed, Moved Lawn, Twisted Citron, Forest Moss, Tumbled Glass, Broken China, Barn Door, Ripe Persimmon, Blueprint Sketch, and Wilted Violet Distress Oxide Inks. The colors look so bright!
