Kraft Cardstock Techniques + Sale

Hello! Today I am sharing LOTS of techniques using kraft cardstock. I love the different looks you can get on this paper, and hope you like them, too. I also have a fun giveaway and sale info!

I really like how kraft cardstock changes the look of stamping, coloring, and more. I like a few different kraft cardstocks — Neenah Desert Storm Light Kraft (lightest), Gina K Kraft (medium), My Favorite Things Kraft (medium), and Hero Arts Kraft Paper (dark). I use all of these options in my video.

Today I share a few ways to use kraft cardstock creatively. Keep in mind that many of these techniques work with other colors of cardstock.

#1: OFF-SET STAMPING

One of the coolest effects you can get with kraft cardstock is with off-set stamping. I first stamp an image in white pigment ink and then slightly offset the stamp and stamp again with a colorful dye ink.

For my first example, I stamped on Hero Arts Kraft Paper and used Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA) – my favorite white pigment ink – and new colors of Gina K Dye Ink. These will be released in a few days. The images are all from the Concord & 9th Wreath Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) which is a brilliant set! Be sure to watch the video to see how it is used.

For my next card, I used the same off-set stamping technique but with Gina K Kraft Cardstock and a different wreath from the Concord & 9th Wreath Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9).

I used Hero Arts White Satin Pearl Embossing Powder (SSS | HA) on the sentiment – I love the look of this powder on kraft cardstock. I stamped a message from the Concord & 9th Best Mail Ever Stamp Set on a Studio Katia 5×5 Neenah Desert Storm Envelope.

#2: COPIC COLORING

You can also use Copic Markers or other markers on kraft cardstock. I like the unusual, muted look of the results. It is fun for something different!

For my example, I used Neenah Desert Storm Light Kraft and the Concord & 9th Banners and Blooms Stamp Set (SSS | C9). I first stamped the images with a Copic-friendly My Favorite Things Kraft Hybrid Ink and colored. I then stamped again – right on top – with VersaMark Ink and white heat embossed. For the sentiment, I used the Concord & 9th Ribbon Banner Die (SSS | C9).

#3: COLORED PENCILS

Coloring with colored pencils on colored cardstock is a very popular technique right now. And I especially like the results on kraft cardstock! I used Polychromos Colored Pencils (SSS | AZ) today but you can use any pencils you may have.

For my example, I used the Concord & 9th Posie Fill-In Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and Gina K Kraft Cardstock. I first stamped the images with Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA) and then applied heavy color with my Polychromos Colored Pencils (SSS | AZ) on top. By stamping first in white, I find the color “glows” more.

I also like how May Arts Natural Twine works so well with any kraft cardstock. Using it gives texture and interest… without too much bulk.

#4: OXIDE INKS (OR PIGMENT INKS)

If you stamp with dye inks on kraft cardstock, the cardstock just becomes dark… with very little color. (Unless you stamp with white pigment ink first as I did in my first example.) This is because dye ink absorbs into the paper. If you stamp with pigment inks on kraft cardstock, you will get better color since pigment ink “sits on top of” the paper.

However, my favorite ink on kraft cardstock for colored stamping is Distress Oxide Ink (SSS | EH). This ink is part-pigment and part-dye ink, so it is perfect! For my examples, I used Distress Oxide Inks (SSS | EH) to stamp the three layers of “hooray” from the Concord & 9th Triple Step Hooray Stamp Set (SSS | C9). To make them “glow” a bit more, I misted them lightly with water. I stamped the small sentiment and stars with Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA). To make the card “pop” a bit more, I added a few White Gelly Roll Pen highlights. Again, the image on the envelope is from the Concord & 9th Best Mail Ever Stamp Set.

#5: METALLICS

There is something so classy about using metallic embossing powders on kraft cardstock. (You can also try metallic inks but the shine is not as impressive.)

For this card, I used the fun Concord & 9th Semicircle Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and four embossing powders – Hero Arts Gold, Hero Arts Silver, Hero Arts White Satin Pearl, and Altenew Golden Peach. The shine is gorgeous!

For the sentiment portion, I used embossing powders along with the Concord & 9th Yay (SSS | C9) and You’re My Happy Dies (SSS | C9).

#6: TONE-ON-TONE & COLORED EMBOSSING

My next example shows the looks you can get with tone-on-tone stamping and colored embossing on kraft cardstock.

I used the Concord & 9th Bitty Burst Turnabout Stamp Set. I stamped it four times:

  1. with Ranger Garden Patina Embossing Powder to show how vivid colored embossing powders are on kraft.
  2. with Versamark Ink to show a tone-on-tone look.
  3. with clear embossing to show a darker and shiny tone-on-tone look.
  4. with Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA) to get a soft look.

For the sentiment, I combined a Concord & 9th Yay (SSS | C9) die cut along with a stamped Simon Says Stamp Emphatic Stamp Set greeting. I also added a few orange gemstones.

#7: PERFECT PEARLS

If you are looking to add a bit of shimmer to your kraft cards, try Perfect Pearls Pigment Powder. It can be used with any pigment ink, such as the two I used today – VersaMark Ink and Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink (SSS | HA).

I used the Perfect Pearls Pigment Powder on a background that I made with the new Concord & 9th Sketched Stripes Stamp Set (SSS | C9). I then added pieces created with the Concord & 9th Rainbow Wishes Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and Dies (SSS | C9). I really like the bright colors on top of the kraft background. And the shimmer from the Perfect Pearls Pigment Powder adds a nice touch.

You can see a bit of the shimmer here…

  1. Your cards and ideas are amazing and inspirational as always. Don’t think you EVER have to apologize because the video is long as far as I am concerned. The longer the better – who is going to complain about more information and inspiration? Thank you – you make this community a wonderful and kind place to hang out!

  2. Your cards are fantastic ! I love creating on kraft cardstock and I’m happy to find inspiration for new techniques.
Concord & 9th products are really amazing and I love “playing” with them.
Thank you for all the videos and inspiration you’re offering us.

  3. Jennifer, thanks for sharing your Kraft tips with us. I love using Kraft card bases so appreciate new ideas. Your cards are all fabulous. Using different colored embossing powders look awesome!

  4. These cards are gorgeous. I love the flowers done with Copic markers and white embossing. I’m just noticing Concord and 9th and I really like them. Think it might become my favorite company! Thank you for your wonderful videos, I’ve learned such a lot from them.

  5. You could have an hour long video, and I would still watch! Love your cards and all your ideas!!! Thanks for sharing with us!

  6. Thank you for another great video! I wonder if using the MISTI would allow you to do all the pigment stamping first and then go back to shifting and dye ink? Would that mess up the design? Cleaning off the pigment ink is just so time consuming…I still don’t own a turnabout stamp but this looks like a fun twist on using them. 🙂

  7. Gorgeous, gorgeous cards Jennifer. Please never apologize for longer videos; we eat them right up!! I’ve always loved the look of white and other colors on Kraft paper. Such an elegant look. Thanks for taking the time to bring us such an in-depth and extensive look at the many options we have. Have a fabulous week. ~HUGS~

  8. DELIGHTFUL!
I haven’t used kraft much at all … feeling inspired, looking forward to some inky adventures with it soon 🙂

  9. As always beautiful! Jennifer I really wish you would come to Minneapolis Minnesota July 26th through the 29th for the stamp junkies junkie Fest! Gina K is going to be there, and I would love to meet you. I think you’re pretty much everyone’s favorite for techniques, and ideas. Please consider it.

  10. I loved your video and the inspiration~ You enabled me to place a C n 9 order tonight for the sketched stripe background, the wreath turnabout bundle and the hooray stamp set! Yay for me! Now I need to start purging my mini store.

  11. Hi Jennifer…Just love your video as always…don’t go much on the hooray idea but that’s ok as it’s nice to see the different stamps & how they work….My favorite is the embossed metallic card….all very nice….Thank you for your time & inspiration….😍

  12. O.o, wow!! Some amazing cards and some that are simply stunning! I love working with kraft cardstock as I think it brings such a different look. If you made 2 cards exactly the same except one was kraft and one was white they’d look very different different. Thanks for sharing some great techniques for kraft cardstock. You really outdone yourself on this one! And s fabulous video once again too. And I’m saying this once again – NEVER feel bad about the length of your videos!! You explain everything so well and as how what you are doing that when you are done we feel like we can do it and be happy with how it turns out. You can’t get that with a quich description and not seeing it . Yes you inspire but you also give a sense of confidence. Keep doing what you do!!

  13. Please stop apologizing for longer videos, how you use copics or watercolor. You are very generous with your time and knowledge and anyone who doesn’t like that can just not watch. Your videos are clear, concise and easy to follow, which sadly is not true for many available on YouTube. Thank you once again for inspiring me to try some more new to me techniques. You are a wonderful teacher.

  14. Jennifer, Jennifer….YOU never ever ever have to apologize for a long video! What a treat they are 🙂 Thank you for all the AWESOME inspiration!!

  15. Beautiful cards. I love the natural look of kraft cardstock and you’ve given some great stamping ideas to try. No need for apologies on the video length… it was worth every minute!

  16. YOU deserve a big round of applause for sharing your inspiration and wealth of crafty knowledge with us! These techniques were all beautiful but I especially liked how the plaid background came out! TFS

  17. Love all of these! I love kraft card stock and could create many of these with supplies on hand. Thanks for all the inspiration and good tips. You keep us on out toes( or maybe I should say, you keep our finger tips busy!) Any way, It’s a good thing you do! 🙂

  18. Jennifer, this was a fab video – not too long, in fact, you could have gone longer with all the technique and design that was in your video. Thank you for using your God-given gifts and sharing with us each day. Blessings,

  19. Wow Jennifer, that was a whole lot of work you have done, but it was awesome! I love to see how your tips make such a huge different on kraft cardstock. Thanks you so much for this great video and gorgeous cards.

  20. Jennifer,
I really like what you did with the Kraft paper. I didn’t realize there were so many different Kraft papers. Thanks for letting us know what they are and what companies make them and the contrast of them too. You did a beautiful job with the new Concord&9th wreath turnabout. Also I liked how you offset the white with the colored over it. Can’t thank you enough for all your great tips.

  21. Thanks for sharing all this great information on using kraft cardstock! I have some here I need to get out and work with after seeing your tutorial. I love the turnabout stamps but only have a mini Misti, but possibly the Bitty Burst would work in it. Your cards are fantastic, and I don’t mind the length of your videos at all!

  22. Jennifer, I love kraft paper. I am thinking about making wedding invitations for my daughter and I think kraft with one of these approaches would be beautiful. Am I crazy to consider such a project? Do you know of any printers who work with clients who want to do the embellishments on an invitation? Thanks for all of your inspiration. Laura

  23. Now I remember why I bought the HA white ink! You did another kraft stamping video some time ago that I wanted to try. Now I will! Thank you. BTW, I love your long videos. Wish Laura Bassan would learn from you and make hers longer, I’m just getting settled in and hers are over. Now for some bloggers, I’m okay with that, but you and Laura could keep my attention all afternoon! Thanks!

  24. Love each technique, Jennifer–beautiful cards! I just got the HA white dye ink, but now I can’t remember which video you used it in!

  25. Fabulous techniques. Thanks for sharing them all with us. I absolutely LOVE, LOVE , LOVE that I adore you card. Those turn about stamps are genius and the way you used it with the different embossing powders is just as genius. There isn’t a single technique that I don’t want to try myself. Another fantastic video!

  26. Thanks for the great ideas. I prefer your videos to TV any time! They are never too long. Is it possible to overdose on craft? I don’t think so.

  27. Thanks for your wonderful videos, for me they can never be to long.
Thanks also for this fabulous ideas and beautiful cards. I love them.
