Crafting On The Go + GIVEAWAY

Hi! In My Favorite Crafty Things Series (which will be back soon), I showed several cards I made at a crafting retreat. Many people asked for more info on those cards, so I decided to put together a video. At the same time, I thought I would share some tips about crafting when away from home. (I do that a lot!)

While at a retreat, I die cut, stamped, and colored many “card elements.” When I got home, I simply put them on different all-white, textured backgrounds. And boy was that fun! I used dies for my backgrounds, but you could always do white-on-white heat embossing with stamps instead. Creating many cards like this is a great way to use any supplies you have been wanting to use. And the designs are simple… so no need for any mojo. 🙂

LAYERING BACKGROUND DIES

Here are several cards I created with the amazing Birch Press Layering Dies. These die sets are pricey (they include THREE background dies) but are fun, versatile, and a perfect thing to ask from Santa. 🙂 I *love* white-on-white, layered, die cut backgrounds. So classy!

This first one features the Birch Press Dazzle Layering Die Set – a favorite of mine. I added a Penny Black Manger die cut with a Hero Arts Mini Christmas white embossed sentiment. And lots of Clear Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pen…

112216-white15-jennifer-mcguire-ink

Using the same Birch Press Dazzle Layering Die Set, I added a panel with a Taylored Expressions Nativity die cut and Gina K Home For Holidays sentiment. Such a great message!

112216-white2-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I also really like the Birch Press Sevilla Layered background. So much detail! I added an Avery Elle Ornamental die cut along with a Avery Elle Merriest sentiment…

112216-white1-jennifer-mcguire-ink

Sometimes coloring outline images just takes too long… and you can save time by going with a tone-on-tone coloring instead. I colored in the Wplus9 Holiday Houses with a Clear Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pen and it is gorgeous in real life. The sentiment is from the Poppy Stamps Christmas Greetings Stamp Set and the background features the Birch Press Tilter Layering Dies.

112216-white14-jennifer-mcguire-ink

For a more playful look, I used the Birch Press Circa Layered Dies for the background and a sentiment from the great new Amy Tangerine Cheers Stamp Set. That heart is from the new Hero Arts Hearts Infinity Die Set – more on that below…

112216-white-jennifer-mcguire-ink

This next card makes me smile. The Birch Press Delfina Layering background is so beautiful and the Pink and Main Oh Deer Stamps fox is adorable! I also added a sentiment from the Your Next Stamp Cool Banner Stamp Set…

112216-white7-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I am always making cards for teachers – I never seem to have enough. Therefore the Reverse Confetti All Apples Stamp Set is one I reach for often. I added the apple to a classic Birch Press Honeybee Layering background. Such a quick card to pull together…

112216-white4-jennifer-mcguire-ink

… and another with the Birch Press Maxwell Layering background…

112216-white13-jennifer-mcguire-ink

You can also get a layered look using single background dies. Here, I added a white Hero Arts Star Confetti Die Cut Background panel to the front of a white card with foam adhesive and the results are incredible! That Your Next Stamp Magical Unicorn was the perfect addition and such fun to color. Oh – and the sentiment is from Concord & 9th Kindhearted Stamp Set…

112216-white8-jennifer-mcguire-ink

This next card features the same Hero Arts Star Confetti Die Cut Background along with stamped images from the My Favorite Things Merry Everything Stamp Set…

112216-white6-jennifer-mcguire-ink

The Hero Arts Circle Confetti Die also works great for quick backgrounds. I used it for a “snow” feel, but it can be a “party” background too. I just adhered it flat onto the background without foam adhesive so there would be less bulk. The skating cutie and sentiment are from the My Favorite Things Polar Bears Stamp Set. And by the way – I added shimmer to the sentiment strip too…

112216-white9-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I just love this snowman from the Mommy Lhey Doodled Sweater Stamp Set. And the sentiment? I can’t get enough of it! Will use all year round.

112216-white10-jennifer-mcguire-ink

IMPRESSED BACKGROUNDS

Another way to use background dies is to use them with an embossing pad to create an impression. The texture is wonderful! All you need to do is sandwich your paper between a Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mat and a background die and run it through your die cut machine as you would an embossing folder.

The Lil Inker Tribal Chic Die is great for making impressions using a Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mat… and makes a perfect backdrop for this Reverse Confetti Bear Hugs koala cutie. The sentiment is from My Favorite Things Essential Sentiments Stamp Set…

112216-white12-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I also used a Spellbinders Tan Embossing Mat to impress the Reverse Confetti All Framed Up Dies for this next background. I really like how these dies can be used together or separate. And there is that fantastic Amy Tangerine Cheers sentiment again…

112216-white5-jennifer-mcguire-ink

EMBOSSING FOLDERS

Embossing folders are also great for quick backgrounds. For this first card, I used the new Sizzix Leaves 3D Embossing Folder for a fun, textured look. I again used an adorable Reverse Confetti Bear Hugs koala image along with a Your Next Stamp Cool Banner sentiment.

112216-white3-jennifer-mcguire-ink

And for another embossed background, I used the Sizzix Woven 3D Embossing Folder. I really like that Your Next Stamp Silly Monsters Stamp Set! And the fun sentiment is from the Waffle Flower Purse-nality Stamp Set…

112216-white18-jennifer-mcguire-ink

FRAME BACKGROUNDS

Another fun way to add interest to a simple card background is to use a frame.

Here, I added a Avery Elle Postage Stamp Die frame with foam adhesive. It seemed the perfect showcase for the perfect Neat and Tangled Little Baby Jesus Stamps.

112216-white11-jennifer-mcguire-ink

I hope these bundle of cards inspire you to create colored elements on-the-go… and to add them to white textured backgrounds. It is fun!

CRAFTING ON-THE-GO… FOR A GOOD CAUSE

I very often take my crafting on-the-go… airplanes, baseball games, car rides, etc. I had been looking for a very long time for the perfect, compact crafty bag. And I am thrilled to say I finally found it! I use the Hanging Traveler Case from Thirty-One Gifts. I show a closer look in the video, but I like it for many reasons. It is compact and completely zips closed so nothing falls out. It has several pockets and even spots for markers. You can even get it personalized. (I plan to get a couple more with personalization.) I am so happy to finally find the perfect on-to-go crafting bag!

If you are interested in ordering one, you can get it HERE. My friend Stephanie sells it via Thirty-One Gifts. I will earn credits from any sales of this bag (or any of their products) via HERE by 12/7/2016… and we will use ALL of the credits to purchase Thirty-One totes that we will fill with female “stuff” and donate to a shelter. What a great way to give back this holiday season!

If you are purchasing, you can also check out her other stuff. I also like the Tall Organizing Tote for bigger crafting on-the-go… and the Utility Totes for carrying big stuff around and for grocery store runs. Oh – and they have some great specials right now, too. Just be sure you are shopping under “Jennifer McGuire’s 31 Soiree” so we make sure all credits go to the pouches for donations. Thank you!

Thirty-One ships in US. If you are international and want to learn more, please contact Stephanie. She is the best!

HEARTS… FOR A GOOD CAUSE

I have said many times that I think Hero Arts is the best company out there. Their generosity and integrity impresses me over and over. So… when I approached them and suggested that they release their Nesting Hearts Infinity Dies early and donate a portion of the sales, they said yes! Please check out the hearts that are exclusively available HERE. (They will be in stores in mid-December.) For a limited time, Hero Arts will donate 25% off the profits of the Nesting Hearts Infinity Dies to The Kind Campaign to help fight bullying. Awesome, huh? You can get your set HERE – it is a good one!

I love your website & YouTube videos!! I am not very creative, but have been really inspired by you Jennifer. Thank-you so much for sharing yourself with everyone. I love making cards for people & hope to start making some that are as beautiful as yours!

  2. Sherry Bleach says:

I love to experiment with backgrounds but my favorite is to use powder colors and spray them with water to blend.

  3. Diane Bakehouse says:

At the moment my favourite background technique is stenciled embossing paste, also white on white with a colourful focal point. The layering dies cards remind me of that. After one of your crafty videos, I bought one of the layering dies for me and another as a gift for my crafty sister. They are really stunning.

  4. Patty Eifert says:

Fantastic video Jennifer!! I would absolutely to have/win the Birchpress Dazzle Layering Die Set!! I had already listed it as a possible purchase when I watched your 2016 Favorite Dies video. But when I went to check it out….it is definitely out of my budget. But here’s what I love about your videos….you introduced the fact that any embossing folder would make a beautiful background!! On the subject of crafting on the go….I love your suggestion for this 31 bag to take! I have actually packed up a larger 31 bag to take when I go to babysit for my grandchildren. After they go to bed I want to pull out something to work on, but my current 31 bag is kind of bulky & cumbersome. I’m so glad you found the perfect 31 bag to use to craft on the go and will definitely look into purchasing one of them!!

  5. Maddie Mc says:

These cards are all so cute!!!! I really like using embossing folders for my card backgrounds:)

  6. Linda Bostedt says:

I love my embossing folders! But those Birch dies are gorgeous. Time to start saving my pennies

  7. julie m says:

the birch press dies are so amazing. my favorite background technique is pretty much whatever one i am doing on a specific day. guess what i use most often is die layering.

  8. Mel H says:

Schmear and spritz. Ink pad to non stick mat and spritz with water.

  9. CindyGroh says:

I love these cards. If you’re making me pick one I think impression background would be my favorite.

  10. Cynthia B. says:

Embossing folders are the easiest way for me to add a cool background to my cards. I’ve gotta say, though…the layering dies you’ve showed off are show-stoppers! Gorgeous way to add a textured background. Thanks for highlighting these products!

  11. Pam says:

I usually use background stamps & embossing folders for my backgrounds. I am head over heals in love with these Birch Press dies. Love the cards you’ve made.

  12. Teresa says:

I like to use embossing folders and large dies like the Hero Arts Circles and Hearts for backgrounds.
Really like the Birch Press but as you said they are a little pricey. Will wait for another sale and purchase at least one of the backgrounds as they are beautiful. Thanks for always sharing and caring.

  13. Carolina Andrade says:

I’m getting started on the card making art but I do love to experiment with coloring, specially watercolor. Stencils are great too! Thank you for that amazing video!

  14. I really don’t have a favorite for a background…I use dies, embossing folders, a background stamp, a small stamp to make my own background paper, and sometimes just plain paper. Thanks so much for sharing! Those Birch Press dies look like fun! 🙂

  15. yvonne m. says:

The birch press dies look absolutely amazing!

  16. TK says:

Oh Man! What a great bunch of cards…. I love the embossing texture, but the BP Maxwell or the HA Circle Confetti are pretty great too!

  17. Karen Page says:

I either use background stamps or embossing folders, or both! These backgrounds are great, but I don’t know that I would use them often unless I was just having “play” time or was working ahead on my cards. This would not be a technique for a card I needed right away.

  18. Val says:

I don’t really have a favourite technique for backgrounds, but one that I use often would be embossing folders. They are quick and easy to use!

  19. Amanda H says:

I like using background stamps on colored paper with ink of the same color or versamark ink. I’ve got some older versamark pads with shimmer in the ink that I love for making subtle sparkle background watermarks.

  20. Rufus says:

To be honest my favorite is whatever I’m doing at the time! I love ’em all. Embossing folders, inked, watercolored, die cut, layers, embossing tone on tone, patterned paper, alcohol ink backgrounds, you name it I love ’em. Those Birch Press layering background dies are Gorgeous! I like your white on white, but the ombre’ was lovely too. I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed. Thanks for showing the closeups and telling us the products. I found a few that I’d never seen before and really liked. And you can Never, Never, Never have to many sentiment sets!

  21. Pam Klehm says:

These are beautiful cards that don’t take a lot of time to make, and there are many variations so each one doesn’t have to be the same. I love them! I like using Distress Inks and embossing folders for my backgrounds.

    Thanks, Jennifer!

  22. Tami says:

i love embossing folders…so easy and so impactful…but you are sure selling me on the background dies! love these and thanks for all the ideas!

  23. Katherine K says:

My favourite background technique using a background die or embossing folder. Creates such great textures. Thanks for all the amazing ideas Jennifer. All are such great CAS samples. Another great video added to my list of faves. ?

  24. Janpfh says:

Backgrounds for me are a toss up between watercolor and alcohol inks. I like watercolor for the softer looks, but alcohol ink backgrounds are great for bold statements.

  25. Jill Rauenhorst says:

I love my dots embossing folder for making quick backgrounds, but the layered ones are stunning!

  26. Linda Jamme says:

Wow, you’ve been a busy girl. What a bunch of beautiful cards and such cute images and sentiments. I love whit on whit or black and white with a bit of color. Great job!

  27. Silvia Lazo says:

All are my favorites…lol…however the cards you used with the birch press dazzle layering dies to me are best, they are simple yet elegant. The dies seem to be very versatile.

  28. Judy Ferrell says:

Mine is the using the dies to emboss the backgrounds, since watching your videos. Thanks so much.

  29. Mutzy Mia says:

I love working white on white with background dies. Loved the cards you made. I agree, the embossing folders don’t get used enough..loved the ones you used…

  30. Yvette says:

Oh m goodness! I am in love with those layering background dies! Thanks for an amazing video and so many fun cards!

  31. Hi Jennifer!
Thank you for yet another chance at a give-away! One of my favorite background techniques is on watercolor paper. I LOVE to wet the paper and just drop it on the paper in light watercolor shades in small little drops. I use 3-5 colors and almost any stamped image will work with the background. I vary the colors so it isn’t 5 shades of blue, but red, blue, green, prayer and black or any other variety. I can make 8 cards from 2 sheets of watercolor paper!

  32. Amy says:

Since I have about 100 embossing folders and I use them all the time that would be my current favorite technique. Looking forward to trying the dry embossing with dies.

  33. Pat C says:

Really appreciated this video! Made me realize I need to do more on-the-go crafting.

Fave technique? The embossed resist technique…

  34. Laura Litzinger says:

Great ideas for on the go crafting. I need to get more organized 😉
Love the layered dies. They look so cool.

  35. Cheryl Bennett says:

I like using Color Burst to make backgrounds. Love your cards!

  36. Rukmini says:

The Birch Press dies are gorgeous!! All the cards you show here are beautiful! I think I am going to be placing a very big SSS order after the holidays!
Right now I am loving using my background dies and layering some glitter paper below so that the cutouts are all sparkly!

  37. Katrina H says:

I don’t think I have a favorite background technique. A lot of the time I just leave them plain white, but I’m excited to do some of these things next time I make cards. I bought a couple of those layered background dies to give my mom for Christmas, but maybe I’ll have to splurge and get some for myself soon. Thanks for the chance to win!

  38. Andrea says:

My favorite background technique is white embossing plus rubbing acrylic paint thinned with glycerine all over the background.

  39. Eve says:

These products are nice! My fav. background tech? hmmm… so many… I’ve started stamping so many years ago when not many products were available, so I used to “create” my own background, loong before those beautiful papers were introduced 🙂 Anyways, just one I’m thinking at the moment for my next Christmas card I’m creating, I’ll use Distress inks for my background and water (wz some color or not). Flicker the water over the Distress inked CS.

  40. Kathy Mc says:

Adorable, Jennifer, and love this post. My favorite backgrounds are your faux metal technique using embossing folders. I keep forgetting to try it myself so appreciate the reminder. ?

  41. Denise Bryant says:

Awesome background ideas! I love using my embossing folders!

  42. Andrea D says:

I Love your cards they are great.
I Love to emboss with my dies, sometimes with ink or embossing powder.
And backgrounds with distress inks are so great. With or without water sometimes with perfekt pearls in water or stamped with versamark and put thene perfect pearls over it. There are so many ways to creat a beautiful background.

  43. Beverly U says:

My favorite technique shown is the layering dies. Until I purchase them or receive as (hopefully) Christmas gifts, I do like to use embossing folders for backgrounds. Not a fan of adding color to them, classic white makes me happy.

  44. Joyce says:

Just love these cards you created! Thank you for reminding me to use the plethora of embossing folders I have!

  45. Lindsey says:

    I love embossing folders!

  46. Nives K says:

My favorite backgrounds is the embossed resist technique.

  47. Piipa67 says:

Really really like that sevilla background. I normally don’t use dies for backgrounds but rather big stamps and some background dies from MTF. But these dies are so awesome, it gives your card such an extra dimension. Just love it.

  48. Those layering dies are so amazing! My fave background techinique is anything with Distress Inks usually 🙂

  49. Marina says:

I like to use heat embossing for backgrounds, tone on tone or resist technique. But these layering dies look awesome, I might have to change.

  50. Toni C says:

The Birch Press dies are amazing but the Confetti dies popped up are also fantastic. I love using embossing folders – quick and simple but still very effective.
