Coloring Challenge + Surprise Spinner Card

Hi! I am back again with some fun sparkle coloring and surprise spinner cards. I am also participating in The 30 Day Coloring Challenge – more info on that below.

I really enjoy stamping a bunch of images and then taking them (along with markers and scissors) on the go. This is a great way to make the best use of my time. Today I used some of those on-the-go-colored-images to create surprise spinner cards.

I got carried away with these cards! I stamped a bunch of adorable Clearly Besotted images and went to town. Clearly Besotted has some of easiest-to-color images in any theme you can imagine. Also, there are many images in a set that can be used together for fun scenes or for simple cards. (I used the Trouble in a Tutu, You’re Purrfect, Cheering for You, Best Friends, Some Birdie Loves You, Cool Dude, Jump for Joy, and Out of This World stamp sets.)

Be sure to watch the video to see all the examples I created. Each card has a simple stamped panel on the front… colored with various colors of Spectrum Noir Sparkle Pens. (I really like the shimmer of these pens. They are fun to take on the go because you can blend them and get watercolor-like coloring. I will have a color chart for you soon!)

In addition to the cheerleading pandas, I also really like the dancing hippos from the new Clearly Besotted Trouble in a Tutu stamp set. Isn’t she cute?

When you open it up, a ballerina pops up and spins. I created this spinning element by stamping, coloring, and cutting two images and gluing them back-to-back with string between. The string is stretched from the front of the card to the back of the card. So easy! However, to have the two images to put back-to-back, the images need to be mirror images of each other. Therefore I did a mirror stamping technique to get the two hippos. But keep in mind – if an image is symmetrical (like the panda above), you don’t need to do mirror stamping – just stamp it twice.

And for all my kitty-loving friends…

The Clearly Besotted You’re Purrfect Stamp Set is so cute! And this jumping/spinning kitten even warms the heart of this dog-lover. 🙂

Again, be sure to watch the whole video to see all the card examples I created. These are addictive! Oh – and HERE is another video with a similar spinning feature.

  1. What a clever idea! I’m used the spinners that show on the outside and the inside but to use them only on the inside is really cool and a great idea for the young and young at heart. I also really like this technique for reverse image stamping. It looks so foolproof that I think I might actually be able to do it. 🙂 Thanks for sharing and for a chance to win in online card class!

  2. I do color on the go. I was late about the 30 day challenge but I did start it yesterday to create some cards and color them…as well, back to my secret garden. Can you show some ideaa other than using the coloring to create cards? More days to go…yeah

  3. What fun cards! I love this idea for both kid and adult cards. I color on the go sometimes. I should really get more on the go things ready to color and keep a little tote packed so I can do this more often.

  4. Yay! Love everything including how to use up fishing line since I can’t seem to catch a fish! Awesomeness as always Jennifer!

  5. Love your technique, someday I’ll have the MY SWEET PETUNIA MISTI STAMPING TOOL!! Thanks for sharing.

  6. I have colored, stamped or assembled cards on the go before, but find I tend to haul too much. I need to plan more carefully. I prefer to take some simple card kits that only need to be assembled, having already done all the prep work at home. I LOVE that hippo ballerina! I still have a spinner card (commercial) that my grandparents gave me in the ’70s. I was “clearly besotted” by it and have kept it all these years. I chuckle every time I run across it and always have happy thoughts of them, too.

  7. I don’t know why you would think this wasn’t a good video! I always learn something from you, even if its just a faster way to deal with the string on these cards 🙂 I love that all the coloring on these were done with the sparkle pens. I wouldn’t have thought they were designed for coloring. I thought of them more for layering over other coloring. So I learned at least 2 things, and I enjoyed seeing a multitude of your cards 🙂 I guess even brilliant, card making, technique gurus have down days, eh? 😉 Consider this a virtual spinner card with a heart. Hugs!

  8. I do take small crafty projects with me to night shift in case there is some quiet time to play. Night shift is where I started trying to watercolour. I still need lots of practice but I have been enjoying it!

  9. Your question made me think about all the time I spent waiting for my teenagers while they were at practice or rehearsal for various events or even Doctor appointments. Now I find I don’t have those bits of time when coloring would have been such a joyful way to pass the hours. So now I just enjoy coloring from my comfy chair at home. Thanks for the delightful cards!

  10. I have gotten into taking an Adult Coloring Book and brush markers with me in the car. That said, I am having a hard time just coloring the sheet with no plan. (I am the type that wants to do something with the item if I am going to spend the time working on it.). So, I think it is time to stamp up some cardstock, etc and take a few of those with me also. I love your videos and the ideas are getting me ready to pull out my card making and scrap booking supplies again.

  11. I love the cards you make and especially enjoy watching your videos. I learn so much from you and watching you’re videos. I truly love the cards that are colored and have always wanted to try it. Maybe once I get started I will want to take it on the road with me and not be able to put it down.

Thank you for everything you have taught me.

  12. Your cards are so cute. I can see why the hippo is your fav. I also think those parrots are adorable too. Thanks.
p.s. Your video was great also, nothing to apologize for.

  13. Super cute cards! Have to go back and watch your video. No, I don’t color on the go – I am not very good at it and need to concentrate a bit when I do color. Thank you for the chance to win!

  14. I don’t colour on the go, more because I am not organised than that I wouldn’t want to, or couldn’t! Perhaps I need to stamp a bunch of images and organise a pencil case of supplies.

  15. Why are you apologizing, silly lady. The video was GREAT!!! I am definitely making this card soon!! You’re the greatest!!

  16. I never ever color on the go as I am still finding ways how to accommodate the coloring materials and images in a convenient bag or container. Somehow, my ideas are getting near now and hopefully I can have my color on the go soon!

  17. I always do color pn the go whenever we are on trips 🙂 Cannot go without my Sakura Koi Travel set and Faber-Castell artist pens.

Jennifer, your cards are super cute, adorable and fun! Thank You so much for the video and inspirations!

  18. These spinning cards are adorable. You are way to hard on yourself Jennifer. The video was great and very fun.

  19. These cards are so adorable. My grandkids would love getting these interactive cards. I’m going to have to go through and look at my stamps to see which ones would work with this technique. As always, thanks for a wonderful idea! Yes, I do color on the go, especially when we’re traveling to visit our kids who all live in other states.

  20. I’ve started bringing along images to color when away from home, but I can only get to it when the kids are asleep! Thanks for sharing another fantastic card!

  21. Such cute spinners! Sad to say I do not color on the go because I seldom am on the go. I color at home all the time and find it very relaxing!

  22. I do color on the go! I color just like you – although I do it while waiting for my husband when he goes into a tool store!

  24. I love these spinner cards, they are so cute and fun! I stay at home like ALL the time, unless I have to go to the grocery store or something, so no i dont color on the go. But maybe if I had somewhere to go where I would have time to color, I probably would, but so far, not yet.

  25. I esp love the kitty spinner! Sweet.
I sometimes take coloring supplies with me on trips to play with at my destination, but not during the actual traveling.

  26. ooh! This is so cute!! Love the spinners 🙂 I have never colored on the go , so far! My daughter is 2.5 years old and she usually takes up most of our time and energy on the flight, especially considering we have to travel for more than 24 hours in flight. Now we are expecting our second kid by the end of this month 🙂 So I guess I can’t expect to color in-flight for another 2 years atleast!
