Video: Double Die Cutting + BIG Giveaway!

Good morning! Yesterday, I shared on Instagram a photo of Thanksgiving place settings I made as a gift. Many people asked if I had a video showing them, so here it is! I think you might like the double die cutting technique…

So a teacher at my son’s school asked me for ideas for making place settings for her Thanksgiving dinner of 40. Me – being who I am – I decided to make them for her as a gift. I think teachers do SO much and get too little recognition. So if this makes her feel appreciated, then the time spent making them was well worth it!

I used the Simon Says Stamp Stitched Grand Maple Die to cut 80 total leaves from Gina K Fresh Asparagus, Honey Mustard, and Cranberry Tart cardstocks… and wood paper. I then double die cut half of the leaves to make them smaller/shorter… simply by shifting the die slightly and cutting again. This is a great technique for getting the most out of your die cuts.

I then gold-glitter heat embossed a mix of sentiments on the smaller leaves. (I used sentiments from the Winnie and Walter Happiest of Holidays, Reverse Confetti Walk by Faith, Lil Inker Designs Leafy Greetings, and Hero Arts Joyful Thanksgiving sets.) The MISTI stamping tool is very helpful when doing this! Finally, I used an Ink Blending Tool to quickly add a bit of matching Distress Ink to the edges.

I also used the MISTI and it’s magnets to hold the leaves while I added a twine and ribbon bow. Worked like a charm!

  1. Love the leaves! It was so nice of you to make these for your son’s teacher! Teachers need all the help and kindness they can get! In the past I always cross stitched cute “ornaments” for my kids (now they are grown and love the ornaments) to hang on their tree. I still make ornaments of different kinds for my tree and some of my friends. Thanks so much for all your videos, I’m just mesmerized by some of your techniques!

  2. Since I have 5 kids, and like to decorate for holidays and birthdays, etc, making my own decorations saves money, plus gives me more reason to make something, as well as to involve the kids in creating.

  3. Previous to my retirement, I was working 90-100 hours per week, so there wasn’t much time to home make anything. There are years that we didn’t get to decorate our home for the holidays at all due to our work travel schedules, etc. Now that I am retired, I’m finding that I want to make my own everything! I took up sewing and made my own drapes; I took up jewelry making until all my friends and sisters complained that they don’t have enough wrists and necks and earlobes for all of my creations; I just took up card making, since no once should complain if I send too many cards! I had planned on making all kinds of decorations, but now I am so busy making cards that I don’t know if I’ll ever get around to making anything new. However, I know I will use what we already have in a different way than we used it in years past.

  4. Oh so beautiful and not so complicated to make, thank you for sharing.

About decorations for Christmas yes I have made some for the tree last year, I wanted it to be super special so I made some ornaments and angels with paper and a lot of glitter, it was very fun.

  5. Yes! I most definitely hand make deorations for the holidays! I used to make more but I am limited now as to what I can do. I am also trying to get my studio set up so I can start creating cards to give/sell. This will be my only means of income (other than social security) so I definitely have to devote as much time as possible to creating as I am a little slower now. I hope to create some unique decoration this year and will take many photos!

  6. Thank you for sharing all of your great ideas. You always provide such great inspiration. I do make handmade ornaments. Many of them involve die cuts. This year instead of store bought bows I am making gift toppers with diecuts. The MISTI is on my Christmas list!!
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family.

  7. Yes! I often make my wrapping paper. I love combining craft paper with stamps, or just with a pretty ribbon or a handmade tag. I look forward to creating a color scheme each year and keep little cutting in a Christmas book so I can have a record of each year’s packages. Geeky, but fun!

  8. When I was a little girl (many years ago) we always handmade our Christmas decorations and I always used to make place cards for Thanksgiving.

  9. Its been quite a long time that I hand-made any holiday decorations but will try out with new techniques soon .
Being an international folk its hard to get international craft supplies here in Pakistan and we always have to pre-order items which is way too much costly . Jennifer I would really love to win this MISTI tool ! Its on top of my wish list <3

  10. It’s just me in the household so don’t go crazy. If I put it up I have to take it down. So I have a little pink tree, shabby chic feel. I didn’t want to go overboard but wanted a finished look. So I punched out different size and edged circles and made my own garland for tree. Patterned paper and shiny sparkly paper to bounce light off for a glow.

I’ve also cut out cute village to go under tree from white paper and used led tea lights for inside buildings to give glow.

  11. you have always so wunderful ideas and you are so kind….
i created the decoriation in church for the wedding of a girlfriend of mine.
    lovely greetings

  12. I love to make Christmas ornaments and cards as well. These ‘Thanksgiving Leaves’ are beautiful and I love the tip for double die cutting – great idea! Thanks for sharing !!!

  14. Love these leaves, so beautiful. The distress ink really makes them seem almost real!

Yes, I made snowflake ornaments last year for all the adult ladies in my family, and coated them with wink of stella!

  15. I have handmade decorations for most holidays. One of my favorite things about the holidays is the opportunity to make something to decorate the table or the tree, our home or just for a loved one. Many of my Christmas gifts are handmade. It is so much more meaningful to give something made with love, than just random spending at a store.

  16. My mother is the card maker in our family. She makes cards for every holiday and birthday. This year’s Christmas cards were started early – in August. I found a great Penny Black stamp set in her craft room. One card will be a stamp of 2 dogs and a cat dressed for winter in hats and scarves. The other stamp has a hedgehog driving a “bug” car with presents in the back. All of the cards have her personal touch of color pencils and a Let it Snow sentiment.

  17. Yes, I make lots of handmade gifts for the holidays. One of my favorite things to do is swirl acrylic paint inside a glass ornament and decorate the outside with vinyl die cut with the recipient’s name or initial.
Thanks for the inspiration for a Thanksgiving place decoration and also for the inspiration to do something nicefor a teacher

  18. I love making handmade decorations. I think they give such a warm personal touch. It makes the house homey. Especially when the kids help. Thanks for all of your technique tips! Michelle

  19. I’m a teacher; your appreciation for what we do is absolutely heart-warming, as is your willingness to create these gifts. So touching and so beautiful. Yes to making home-made decor: banners for the mantle, place holders, tags, mini albums…Thank you for sharing your creativity with us.

  20. I have 2 daughters and we love to make handmade ornaments and decorations for ourselves, as well as for friend and family.

  21. Gorgeous! They will definitely add a festive touch to the table. As always, your video was wonderful. Yes, I do sometimes make decorations for the holidays. Christmas tree ornaments are one of my favorites to make.

  22. Those leaves will be beautiful on the teacher’s table. Great idea. I frequently make holiday decorations. In fact I’ve made holiday decorations longer than I’ve been making cards.

  23. As long as I remember, Mom always made beautiful handmade gifts and decorations ….it’s a tradition I have been blessed with and continue in my life today. This weekend we started our Christmas cards ….what a beautiful way to start the holiday season 🙂

  24. I have only made decorations for holidays a couple of times. I hope to do a Christmas wreath this year, using my cardstock, dies and stamps.

  25. I never make any decoration during Christmas, this year, I have some design in mind, hopefully i really got around to do it 😉

  26. I enjoyed making Christmas ornaments. I started when my kids were little and give them their box when they have their first Christmas tree. This year I wanted to try to make everybody a card so I can give some to more of my relatives. Thank you so much for showing all the different card options they were beautiful thank you so much and have a blessed holiday.

  27. Definitely! In fact, now that my daughter is old enough, we are making tons of decorations for this holiday season. It’s so much more fun to have a partner in crime!

  28. I am a high school Desktop Publishing teacher. I love making hand-made decorations and my students love it, too! I have a Silhouette Cameo in my classroom for my students to design with. We are making ornaments, gift tags, Santa cookie plates, Santa milk mugs, and many other projects. We may “have” to make the leaf placeholders; they are so cute! Thank you for your design inspiration.

  29. I like how you used the same die for cutting out a smaller leaf! GENIUS! Why didn’t i think of that!? I’ve hand made holiday cards (usually christmas) and i always look to you and Kristina Werner for inspiration. Im constantly watching your videos ^.^

  30. Love all your beautiful ideas, they inspire me to create. My mom was in a nursing home with alzheimers and passed away a few months ago, but I enjoyed making holiday decorations and filled paper candy containers for all the residents and caregivers. This year, I’m making Thanksgiving decorations for a friend who makes Thanksgiving dinner for the residents in her senior apartment building who have no one to spend the day with. Thank you for all you do!

  31. Love the colors of leaves. I always decorate for Christmas., making ornaments, garlands and table decorations. After kids left home I backed off on it. But now the grandkids are of the ages that they like trying crafts too, so, I,m back at it again. This year I am hosting one table at the church ladies luncheon. This entails furnishing everything for the table, decorations, setting, napkins, etc. So the possibility for crafting is endless depending on how much you want to put into it. My gift (if I get enough done) for each gal (8 per table) will be a box of all occasion greeting cards. And who doesn’t like giving or receiving handmade cards! I Just recently came across your videos. Love your techniques and presentations! It is obvious you love what you are doing and love each item you use. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing! Happy holidays!!

  32. Love the leaves. May try that for Thanksgiving. I don’t decorate much anymore for Christmas. My husband passed away a year ago so the holiday’s are not fun again just yet.

  33. I always make table decorations for the holidays and even simple dinners with a few friends. Filling a little box with sweets, adding a name and fresh greenery is my go to “thank you for coming” gift.
