Video: Ink for Beginning Stampers + GIVEAWAY

I am often asked which inks I recommend for new stampers. This is a tough question and I have spent a lot of time thinking about it over the years. And today? I finally have an answer…

[All supplies are linked to multiple sources in the thumbnails at the end of this post. Affiliate links used. To watch the video in HD on YouTube, click HERE.]

I consider three things to be important when considering ink for a new stamper: the quality, the colors, and the ease at which you can get good, solid results. Today’s inks are great on all three counts! In my video, I suggest “a collection of beginner inks” that includes Lawn Fawn and Ranger Dye Inks. Both of these inks are new and have impressed me big time.

The Lawn Fawn colors are rich-yet-muted-mid-tones. The Ranger colors are bright-and-primary. Together? A great collection of 20 inks. (I left out black inks from this – was just focusing on the colors.)

Be sure to watch the above video to understand more about these inks and how they work. And *please* remember – there are lots of other inks I love just as much as these! So be sure to watch THIS video about my other favorite inks. For example – I *love* Hero Arts Shadow Inks, WPlus9 Inks, various pigment inks, etc. and use them most. I adore their unique colors. However I felt the inks I share today are a great place to start to get basic colors. Then you can starting adding in the other great ink lines! (The more the merrier, huh?)

Please check above for a comparison between the colors. Keep in mind that every computer screen is different.

By the way, if you would like to better understand the difference between ink types, check out THIS video.

I don’t have many inks because I’m just starting out trying to create a craft collection, but so far I love the mama eleohant pigment inks. Your videos help a lot thank you !

  3. Wow, Jennifer, you did an immense amount of work to get this ink information to us…thank you. This is very helpful. My current very favorite ink is Tim Holtz distress inks. They are my “go to” inks for most of my projects now. Thanks for the inspiration you are so kind to share with us.

  4. Denise says:

I love hero arts shadow inks because of the great colors and good price point.

Hi Jennifer, I can only say that Stampin Up inks are my favorite because, it is the only inks I have ever used or owned, no I am not a demonstrator, but a friend is. I saw one of your videos on YouTube and was hooked. Your voice is so smooth and easy to listen to. Thank you for sharing all of your many talents!

  6. Sherry says:

Hi, Jennifer! Thanks, as always, for your wonderful balanced, thoughtful information and for your ALWAYS wonderful inspiration. My favorite, favorite, favorite go-to ink page is Tsukineko Brilliance LIGHTNING BLACK. If you haven’t tried this one, please go. Gives a lovely gold/black shimmer and always gives great coverage. I use it for the inside sentiment and often for the cover focal image and almost always for my little “signature” stamp (a magic wand) on the back. Would LOVE to win the SSS gift. Thanks for your generosity.
May angels continue to be with you. Hope you have a happy day! Hugs, Sherry

My favorite type of ink is the distress ink as you can do so many techniques with it. For day to day stamping I use Stampin Up inks. They aren’t my favorite inks but I like the color match with the papers and accessories. I’m looking for a different ink but I’ve been a little overwhelmed with all of the options. Thanks for the video.

  11. Stacey says:

  20. Allison O'Connor says:

I am just starting out, so just have a few basics. I use Memento all of the time so I can colour, and I have several Distress Inks as you can do so much with them. Very versatile! Lawn Fawn stamps are my favourite, so I am very excited about their new ink line.
Thanks for all of your videos! You make beautiful cards!

    Allie

  21. Jen Stewart says:

I’ve really only used SU! ink because I like how it coordinated with the paper and embellishments. I have to say that’s my favorite however haven’t used much else and would love to opportunity to try out some new brands/colors!

  22. Becky G says:

I really like hero arts, but have never tried lawn fawn or ranger dye inks. Would love to try them!

  23. I love using dye inks. I just bought some new inks from A Beautiful Mess and I love them already.

  24. Eve says:

I luv Distress inks. But I luv these inks from Rangers you introduced here. I like that vivid image when you stamp and doesn’t change much colors.

  25. Tim Nadeau says:

This is awesome information. As a beginner, I am wondering what to get for tools and dyes.

  26. Debra says:

I love the Momento inks. I have a couple of the Ranger inks and am looking to add to those. I have tried other brands and have been concerned with getting the color I am looking for after it dries. Your videos are always so helpful. Thank you for your dedication.

  27. Crystal Boynton says:

My favorite inks that I own are the Memento Luxe inks 🙂

  28. carie hartfield says:

I am currently only using ranger distress inks. I was always hesitant on buying other brands because first, I didn’t have the knowledge about the properties in them or how the results would be. That is until now, so thank you so very much on your fabulous video series. Second, as you very well know, inks are an investment and I personally am on a strict budget. I only want to buy my collections once and not have to be disappointed in a poor decision I made.
I can’t wait to start building up my collection now that I have a better understanding of what’s available and what their uses are for. Keep up the excellent work. I learn so much from watching your work.

  29. Mary P says:

My favorite ink is probably Distress Ink because of it’s versatility. For just stamping, I like the Memento (I get the Dew Drops – inexpensive way to get all the colors; except I have a full size in black). For text and intricate designs, I like VersaFine (although it is hard to clean off). I haven’t tried either of the inks you mentioned but would love to – thanks for the opportunity!

  30. Shona Austin says:

I have used a lot of different inks both pigment and dye. I am anxious to try the ranger dye inks as they are beautiful colors and I definitely like the brighter colors. My absolute favorite ink is Versamark. I like the watermark quality and the ability to heat emboss. Thank you for the tutorial about dye inks and the more subtle differences between Ranger and Lawn Fawn. As always you do a wonderful video with clear and concise information. Please keep doing them as I am learning a lot. Thank you.

  31. Kathy says:

Right now I’m really into the Tim Holtz distress inks and LOVING THEM!!! Thanks for showing all the videos – thanks to you my collection of stamps/inks/etc has more than doubled in the last year.

  32. Sherri Piechnik says:

I’ve used so many different inks but don’t actually have a favourite. I’m eager to try the two inks in your video as these are two I’ve never used. Love your videos!

  33. Sabine says:

I really like the look of the Dye inks but also have been using a lot of pigment inks like the mama elephant. These new Ranger dye inks are fabulous with the great primary colors! I will be checking those out for sure!

  34. Judy R. says:

Beginner or not, this would make a wonderful addition to any ink pad collection. I know a little girl who was just introduced to stamping, and what a gift this would be!

  35. Emma Foster says:

In love with those ink colours! Have definitely got to get my hands on some lawn fawn ones next to play with.

  36. Donna W says:

My favorite ink is memento by Tsukineko. I do use ranger distress
inks and never heard of lawn fawn inks. But willing to try. I have pigment ink
but seem to favor dye inks.

  37. Marina says:

I don’t use colored inks that much, it seems I just don’t have the right colors at the moment.
I use Versafine (onyx black, vintage sepia and smokey grey) the most.

  38. Karina M says:

I love my Close to My Heart dye ink pads, but I have used various other inks as well! I just ordered, and am excited to try, Avery Elle Pigment inks, though!

  39. Thanks for reigniting my love of stamping, Jennifer! My go-to ink right now is Ranger Archival Ink in Jet Black as well as some older Stampin Up colors. I am dying to try out the Lawn Fawn inks, though, and now the new Ranger Dye inks, thanks to your video. 🙂

  40. Laura Beck says:

Great video and timely as I want to replace some of my 10 year old stamp pads and was wondering what brands to buy. I love distress inks for their versatility but want some good inks for regular stamping. Thanks for making this video, you are always so informative!

  41. Anne Dupre says:

I love distress inks but love the way you are keeping track of your ink colors you have great ideas

  42. Rita Horta says:

    Hello Jennifer,

I only have distress inks and some memento.

I love the products from Lawn Fawn and my 12 year old daugther too, and she wants to try the newest inks from Lawn Fawn, so this would bee a great oportunity.
Thank you for sharing with us you beautiful work and knowledge

    Kisses from Lisbon Portugal

  43. I love ink … all ink. My most used is probably the Ranger Distress Ink line. A close second are Ranger’s Adirondack inks. When I began stamping 15 years ago, I became a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator, and since I was a demo for the company, I pretty much used solely their inks. I think I had tunnel vision during my 10 years as a SU demo, and since I’ve dropped, it’s like a huge world of inks & stamps opened up for me!

  44. Ann Marie says:

I use my 2 black inks the most; Versafine for watercolor and Tuxedo for Copics, but I love Delicata Gold, and using pigment inks with clear embossing powder. It’s so much fun!

  45. Patchi says:

Thanks for showcasing these two collections. I think I’m ready to move beyond versafine, versamark, and distress inks now that I’m assembling a collection of stamps.

  46. rita says:

Can you in your videos say who makes the inks … I know some smaller companies have the same larger company make their inks and then put their own name and labels on them. I have a full set of Memento inks and wondered if any of the other inks are the same or are different in color and use. Thanks. I love all you share and teach us. Thanks so so much. I teach in my home and at conventions but sometimes need help on answers to questions myself … so I think of you as a teacher of teachers!! Thanks

  47. Teresa says:

I primarily only have Stampin Up pads, I am really new to stamping, but have recently gotten Unicorn from Hero Arts and Black Licorice from My Favorite Things based on your YouTube videos. I am looking forward to trying these. I really appreciate all the information you are sharing. This way I branch out and try new things without having to do it blindly. Thank you!

  48. Angie Hall says:

I love the richness of the Memento Luxe inks. I also have Hero Arts, Distress and a few others. Tks for the informative video, Jennifer.

  49. Alma Channell says:

I would like to try the ranger inks. Only tried a few. So far versifine is my favorite.
    Thanks Alma

  50. Michele says:

I just started looking into stamping for wedding decor so I don’t have a favorite ink yet.
