Watercolor for Non-Watercolorers + GIVEAWAY

Hi there, stampers. One thing I know for sure – I am not great with watercolor. I don’t know the “rules” and honesty don’t have a desire to learn them. 🙂 Instead, I like to find ways to use watercolor in a carefree, effortless way! And today I am sharing those ideas with you, along with lots of tips.

Watercolor is a beautiful medium with the potential for amazing results. There is a lot to learn about them… and lots of resources! (See below.) But for me, I just like to PLAY… without learning longer techniques or “rules”. If you are like me – and want to play with watercolors without being a “watercolorer” – these ideas may be for you.

In the video, I used the new Altenew Watercolor 36 Pan Set (SSS | ALT). I will be honest – I was not planning on being in this hop (more on that below) because I didn’t think I needed to use a new watercolor. But I tried them… then emailed Altenew asking them to add me in the hop last minute. 🙂 That is how much I like this watercolor!

The Altenew Watercolor 36 Pan Set (SSS | ALT) is a set of 36 vibrant watercolor half-pans. They are smooth and easy to use. And the best part? The colors match the Altenew Ink Line (SSS | ALT)! This makes this cardmaker’s heart very happy. Be sure to watch the video to learn more about them.

My video also shares a few effortless watercolor techniques. All of my images were stamped with VersaFine Onyx Black Ink on Tim Holtz Watercolor Paper and clear heat embossed. I find the heat embossing acts as “walls” to control the water I add.

My first card shows what I call “tilted watercolor.” I painted in the embossed Altenew Perfectly Perfect (SSS | ALT) flowers with a heavy amount of water. I then touched a bit of Puffy Heart Altenew Watercolor (SSS | ALT) towards the center of the petals. I tilted the paper up about 45 degrees when it was still wet and let it dry in that position. This causes the bottom of the image to be vibrant in color… and the top tips much lighter. I did the same with the leaves using Forest Glades Altenew Watercolor (SSS | ALT).

For my background, I made an impression of the Altenew Leaf Frame Die (SSS | ALT) onto white cardstock using my die cut machine and a Spellbinders Embossing Mat. However, before making the impression, I lightly rubbed Puffy Heart Altenew Ink Pad (SSS | ALT) over the cutting edges. I love this soft look… and that the ink matches the watercolor perfectly.

The sentiment is from the Altenew Cross Stitch Flower Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

My next card features the Altenew Happy Heart Stamp Set (SSS | ALT) and another simple watercolor technique. I painted in the heat embossed flowers with a generous amount of water. I then touched a bit of Puffy Heart Altenew Watercolor (SSS | ALT) towards the center of the flowers… and a bit at the tips. I let the water do the work for me… creating darker areas and soft highlights between. So. Very. Easy.

For a soft backdrop, I added a bit of pink ink over a Altenew Feeling Dotty Stencil (SSS | ALT) stencil. The sentiment is from the Altenew Starry Flowers Stamp Set (SSS | ALT)… and I added dots of Black Nuvo Drops at the center of the flowers.

You can also effortlessly use more than one color together. Here, I painted in my heat embossed Altenew Perfectly Perfect (SSS | ALT) flowers with water. I dropped a bit of Coral Berry Altenew Watercolor (SSS | ALT) towards the inside of the petals and a touch of yellow towards the outside. I let the water do the work as it dried… and the results are vibrant.

I stamped the Altenew Starry Flowers Stamp Set (SSS | ALT) sentiment with the matching ink colors… and added it to a panel cut with the Altenew Dotted Scales Debossing Die (SSS | ALT).

Here is another example of easily using two colors together. I painted in my heat embossed Altenew Starry Flower (SSS | ALT) with soft blue Altenew Watercolor (SSS | ALT). I then touched dark purple to the centers. So easy.

I stamped the sentiments with the matching Altenew Inks (SSS | ALT) and stamped a portion of the Altenew Pinstripe Stamp Set (SSS |ALT) along the side.

Here is a closer look at the results. Effortless!

I also like to use watercolor for carefree, non-realistic looks… such as my rainbow flower. 🙂 Just fill the image with a generous amount of painted water… then add in the colors. Easy!

Watercoloring images like this is a great way to experiment with the colors you have.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Just what I needed to hear! You probably don’t realize just how much value your say-so has in the crafty world. Now, Jennifer McGuire said I don’t have to be perfect, just have fun! I feel validated! Why I need that validation, I don’t know, but it feels sooo good! Hugz!

Absolutely STUNNING cards made from the watercolours. The colours ate amazing..thankyou for the tip on embossing to make a boarder to keep the water in! Brilliant idea. Thankyou for deciding to be in the hop. Xxx

  16. Samira Ahmed says:

I love to watercolor, it all started in an art class I took since I also love to draw, i do admit that I love drawing so much more but that doesn’t mean I don’t like to watercolor, Its fun to mix colors and layer the different pigment because you can go from something so plain to detailed, I think i have ranted enough so I’ll just end it here

  17. Meghan says:

  20. Haejin Kang says:

Such beautiful cards! I’m obsessed with watercolors and love to just play, though I can definitely get bogged down at comparing myself to other amazing watercolorists, and get stuck in the details. Love your rainbow flowers in particular~

  21. Teresa Doyle says:

These are such beautiful cards Jennifer. You may not think you are a water colourer but you have taught me a couple of things today! I have been trying to learn for 2 years and am still a beginner but I am determined to learn. (I probably would have had it ‘down’ by now but am learning to use Copic’s too. I work with them both as the mood strikes…) However, I am excited to see Altenew extend their product line. I already love all of their products so I know these must be great as well.

  22. Margaret B says:

Awesome cards. I am just learning how to watercolor and mainly I just like to play around with them like you do. Thanks for sharing your techniques and details in your videos, I always learn so much from you.

  23. Juana Vega says:

I do enjoy water coloring and have a good collection of them, but these you have used here look like cream when wet. I will be looking forward to trying them myself.

  24. cyndi morris says:

I do love watercoloring, but I’m not very good at it! Watching this video has inspired me and makes me think even I can do this! Your coloring is gorgeous, and I’m always awed by your card designs — just beautiful.

Beautiful cards! I love all of them!

  28. Carolyn S says:

Thanks for evaluating Altenew’s new ink palette. With so many watercolors out there, you just never know what is good and what isn’t. I really appreciate all the Watercoloring for Dummies tips and techniques. I want to try watercoloring but don’t want a big hassle so this is perfect.

Yes, I do enjoy watercoloring. But, I just do my thing and don’t worry about all of the rules, etc. Life is too short! lol Love your beautiful cards and enjoyed your video very much.

  31. Vicky C says:

Stunningly beautiful cards, love them! I don’t usually do watercolouring as I don’t know how to do them “properly” and I don’t have the supplies so I avoid watercolouring in general. Seeing your beautiful cards and the technique, now I am wanting to try!! Thanks for the inspiration!

  32. Teri S. says:

Watercolour has got to be my favourite medium, but I am so not talented when trying it & have to do like you say, just relax & go with the flow. I think I need to use more water at first, so thank you for making that very clear. I LOVE how your cards turned out & these paints from Altenew look fabulous. It really caught my interest when you said they tend to be almost creamy when less water is used. Thanks for the great tips, the even greater video, as well as your encouragement Jennifer.

  33. valshim says:

The watercolors look amazing, as do your cards. I’m not really great at watercoloring, but I really love the effect. I just recently bought the Mijello Mission Gold watercolor paints for my birthday and am looking forward to giving them a try. I will be trying your techniques for sure! Many thanks!

  34. Meghan Kennihan says:

So beautiful! I don’t want to get into watercolors because I hate mess but… UGH! You are making me need to try it!

  35. John K. says:

Nice- I have always loved watercoloring an embossed image. It makes it easy and it’s a great way to pack lots of vibrant color in a small area because it stays put! Thanks for showing the unpacked watercolor set- I will pick it up because I have always loved Atenew’s color sets and now my paints will definitely match. Thanks for the chance to win!

  36. Dana Benedict says:

I love the look of watercolor and will defiantly be trying your techniques.

  37. Karen M says:

Your cards are absolutely gorgeous! The Altenew watercolor set is fabulous. Such beautiful colors that are very usable.

  38. julie m says:

watercolors are one of the supplies that i have but don’t ever seem to use. i tend to be a messy crafter, having gotten old enough that i enjoy coloring outside the lines. when i get tired of smooshing i will have to try some watercoloring. bookmarked your video for a place to start.

  39. Your cards are so beautiful!! I’m not a coloring person too and don’t reach out for these supplies but you inspire me to try and use them 🙂

  40. Ang says:

Beautiful cards! I do watercolor sometimes. I have the brushpens from kuretake and sometimes I use the dye ink pads as well.

  41. Jeanne Femrite says:

Love the vibrant-to-subtle color palettes you use. I have tried watercoloring, and even though it looks passable, it never looks as good as anyone elses! Maybe I need to try these watercolors from Altenew. I know when I started using their inks, my colors became prettier. I LOVE the look of watercolor, just haven’t gotten there yet!

  42. Veronica Klatt says:

  43. BECCA YAHRLING says:

Thanks for sharing and providing us with wonderful inspiration!
