Distress Oxide Inks are the most unique ink available to crafters. Since they have both dye ink properties and pigment ink properties, they can be used for great techniques. To learn more on the basics of Distress Oxide Inks, check out THIS video.

For my first two cards, I used the new Concord & 9th Thankful Leaves Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9). With turnabout stamps, you stamp, then rotate, and stamp again… four times to cover a background. Instead of stamping, I clear heat embossed each time… and added Distress Oxide Ink over the whole paper. The embossing traps the color underneath… and resists the color applied on top. Be sure to watch the video to see this in action. I used layers of green Distress Oxide Inks. Since this ink is opaque, the background layers nicely without turning muddy.

I added a frame from the Concord & 9th Just Because Dies (SSS | C9) with vellum in the center to create a muted spot for the sentiment. The sentiment and leaf die cuts are also from the same set. I covered the leaf with a layer of Judikins Sparkle Embossing Powder for sparkle.

My next example showcases another background made in a very similar way, but on a 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ card. I created a vellum frame using the Concord & 9th Lovely Blossoms Dies (SSS | C9) and added a die cut inlay leaf made from the Concord & 9th Thankful Leaves Dies (SSS | C9). The “thank you” is from the Concord & 9th All About You Dies (SSS | C9). (All of these die sets are great – there are many ways to use them.)

That Concord & 9th Thankful Leaves Dies (SSS | C9) look so cool with die cut inlay and is worth the bit of effort!

This blue background was created with the Layered Distress Oxide Resist technique… but using individual stamps. You could do this with any stamps, but it works best with images that have a solid look to them.) I layered many different blue Distress Oxide Inks over clear heat embossing. (Again, watch the video!)

The sentiment is from the Concord & 9th Lovely Blossoms Dies (SSS | C9).

This last card is a bonus card… just showing the products used in a new way. I used the Concord & 9th Thankful Leaves Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) along with the Concord & 9th Thankful Leaves Dies (SSS | C9) to make the detail impressions. I white heat embossed a sentiment from the Concord & 9th Thankful Leaves Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) on top. The background was created by stamping Distress Oxide Inks with the same set.

I am loving that texture…

  4. Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for sharing these new techniques. I learned a lot and while the process is pretty involved, there where also some little things I can also use.

  5. No worries Jen! I watched your video, placed an order, and I received two freebies, and free shipping! I also signed up for their newsletter, and got an additional discount! All is good in the world! While I’m commenting, I just want you to know what a blessing you are to our wonderful stamping community! I’ve been stamping for almost 20 years, and teaching technique classes for about 15 of those years. I thought I knew most of the techniques out there, but you amaze me every day, and make me feel like a newbie! Lol. Thanks for all the wonderful technique videos!

  6. These are all really lovely Jennifer. I always enjoy learning and trying your ideas. Love the while sentiments on the vellum over the backgrounds such a elegant look.

  7. Oh my gosh, these are beautiful! I wish I had a die cutter so I could do some of these. You make the best cards! I am so jealous! LOL Thanks for showing these to us. I love to watch what you do.

  8. Oh my what fun. Have to have turn about stamp. Beautiful cards. Always look forward to your videos. Thank you

  9. Your video/demonstration really inspired me. I just got some distress oxides and I can’t wait to put them to use with this technique. The results are subtle and rich. For one of the layers I am going to use gold embossing powder or maybe some foiling. Thanks a bunch!

  10. A great way to use Oxide inks. Each layer making a different color. People will wonder how you did it.
    TY for your great ideas.

  11. Oh these are fun and so beautiful! What a great new technique to try. Thanks so much for your wonderful video!!

  12. Hi Jennifer,
what i like about yur techniqu is how it makes the overlapping turnabout stamp less busy. I really like the stamp bu find the overlapping in higcontrast to be too distractng. Your method toned that down and complemented the design. The cards are stunner!

  13. HOLY MOLY, Jennifer! You absolutely blow me away each and every video! What an inspiration you are and such a blessing to each and every one of us in the stampin’ world! Your creations are so beautiful and simply stunning! TFS…I look forward to your videos so much…YOU ARE THE BESTEST!!

  14. Fabulous cards–thanks so much for sharing how you made them! i think all the layering along with the vellum and bits of sparkle are perfect together. Concord & 9th has wonderful stamps. I’m really looking forward to trying this out with my leaf stamps. 🙂

  15. Hey. I love seeing all your ideas on card designs and the best ways to utilise products. Just a thought about the first card you showcased “just because”. Wouldn’t it be easier to stocky tape the “Just” template behind the vellum and line up ur letters instead of pulling them out of the template once stuck to the vellum?

  16. I love this technique. I don’t have any of the turn around stamps, but I have been collecting Distress Oxide inks in some of my favorite colors, so I’ll be trying this with some of my stamps soon. As always, your cards are gorgeous.

  17. Once again, brilliant ideas! Thanks so much for your continuous sharing of ideas and encouragement on how to use what we have (though my whole Pinterest wishlist board is from watching your videos) I have absolutely loved sharing cards with friends and family based on your techniques!

  18. Jennifer,
You have me into these turnabout stamps now and I love the stencils too. Your cards came out great and I loved the technique you used with stamping them in Versa Mark and embossing with clear and running the different inks over each layer. Thanks again.

  19. Thanks for the fixative tip… I just wrote on Tim’s page asking how to preserve the colors so they won’t react if they get wet in the mail. I was worried a fixative would make them react, too. Thanks for the cool technique, too!!

  20. I can’t imagine how you are able to come up with one new technique after another! Makes my head hurt! Then you graciously share with us! Thank you! Hugz!

  21. What a wonderful idea with the Distress Oxides. The cards are awesome and I love how you showed (again, it’s always a great reminder) the Turnabout stamps set works. The sentiments on vellum is so gorgeous. Thank you for all the beautiful cards, the bonus and tips.

  22. I am intrigued by your beautiful cards and the technique you used. I don’t have that kind of ink, but I am inspired to play around with the inks I have to see what kind of results I can get. I just enjoyed your video and thorough explanation.

  23. What a cool technique Jennifer, beautiful cards. Those thin frames and extra dies from Concord & 9th are so elegant, but so contemporary. I love how you used them with the backgrounds. Thank you as always for such a great video ❤️❤️❤️

  24. Looked like a fun technique when I saw your YouTube. Marked it to come back on either a cold or rainy day. Today was the day but unfortunately, I had mixed success. I no matter what I tried ended up with a little or sometimes a lot of embossing powder on the background. I tried all you suggested and everything I could think of to prevent sticking of wayward embossing powder but never got the look like you got. Bummer.

Always fun to watch and be inspired.

  25. These are so beautiful! I love the layering look of the leaves in the first demonstration! My favorite by far!!
