Stamping with water on a Distress-Inked-paper is a technique that I have loved for many years. I felt it was time to break it out again! Distress Ink works best for “stamping with water” since it reacts with water. However, you can try it with whichever dye inks you may have.

For all three examples, I applied Distress Ink to a piece of Neenah White Cardstock, covering it completely. I used a heavy hand when applying the ink because the more ink you use, the better the results. I spritzed the Peony and Dahlia rubber stamps from Impress with water from about a foot or so above and stamped it on the paper. The results? Magical.

You want to make sure to get a nice, even coverage of water when you mist onto the stamp from far above. Then, place the stamp on top of the inked paper, letting it sit for a few seconds before removing it. I did not use any ink on the stamp – just water. You can experiment with other sprays you may have, but I think plain water and pearlized water (created by adding Perfect Pearls to water) works the best. Remember, as it dries, the results will intensify.

For the sentiment, I die-cut the Hero Arts Hello die from a piece of glitter cardstock from My Favorite Things. Since this card is a simple design, I used a striped embossing folder from We R Memory Keepers on a piece of white cardstock to add some interest along the bottom of the cards.

For a finishing touch, I die cut super tiny hearts from a Hero Arts die using the same glitter cardstock and rounded the corners of the card using the We R Memory Keeper’s Corner Chomper. After rounding the corners, I noticed the edges were a bit fuzzy, so I used an emery nail file to smooth out any rough spots.

Since I had all the supplies out, I decided to make matching envelopes. Many people ask what envelopes I use – I like to use envelopes from Hero Arts and Memory Box. I used coordinating ink colors to stamp the flower image on the flap or the front of the envelopes. You could also stamp on the inside of the card.

I hope you give this stamping with water technique a try. It works great with background stamps as well.

oh my goodness. I didn’t even read there was a giveaway, I was so excited about the video.. haha I don’t really have a favorite tried and true technique yet, I guess. I do love the Misti, so I can stamp over and over to get a crisp image. It really comes in handy, since I do most of my card making on my lap, until I get a crafting room set up. ^_^

  7. JaneenK says:

i really am enjoying stamping in white and embossing and then water coloring. i learned this in the on-line card class for water color. i loved the class. I tried this tecnique too and loved how it turned out but i think i need to push on the stamp harder or work more quickly. it didn’t show up real well but good enough.

  8. Jinny Newlin says:

My tried and true is heat embossing. Now i am going to try your techniques for myself…they are so lovely! I would be thrilled to win those stamps—thanks for the chance! And thank you for sharing such great ideas here today!

  40. Aman p. says:

I love your videos Jennifer! I’m pretty new to stamping so I don’t have a tried and true technique yet. So far, my best friend is patience and doing a lot of test stamping before starting my cards. Hopefully one day I can be as good as you or at least stop getting ink EVERYWHERE. 😛

  41. Nancy Anderson says:

This was really a nice refresher on the technique of stamping with water. It reminds me of another technique with water and distress inks, with a very different outcome. I stamped several different colors directly on my on my mat fairly close together, spritzed them with water until the ink beaded up and then i used a stamp and caught a few of the colors, stamped it out on plain paper or watercolor paper. A different take on water colors and stamping. I hope I explained that clearly enough. I’m sure many are familiar with it, but I’d forgotten it until your tutorial. Thanks, I’m going to try them both.

  42. Ananya U says:

    Hello
    Great video,
Right now I like to stamp with a black ink and then use distress inks to colour the background.

  43. LOVE LOVE LOVE these Cards and the FUN technique!! One of my Favorites is to Emboss and then add the ink on top!! THANKS for sharing and have a FABULOUS WEEK!! =)

  44. Judy M says:

My favorite stamping technique is making a background using a versa mark ink pad. It gives you a nice suttle look of the tone on tone also. But I really love your stamping with water and will try it. These two rubber stamps that you used are beautiful.

  45. SarahJS says:

Cool technique, I am adding it to my crafty ‘to do’ list. I think you could get a similar effect by stamping over ink or coloured card stock with white pigment ink (I believe you have done something similar before). Thanks for your continued inspiration. Now, off to tackle some of that ‘to do’ list.

  46. Kristine says:

These are beautiful! My favorite technique right now is layering ink to get a cool effect.

  47. ambecoming says:

I tried it, but nothing happened. I got a faint image, (very faint!) without detail. I tried it with rubber stamps and clear stamps. Even a bleach solution didn’t work. Any ideas what went wrong? I was using a 100 lb cardstock with a very smooth surface.

  48. SueK says:

I love this. So pretty! I guess my best tried and true method would be using distress markers or watercolors. Thanks for sharing.

  49. Linda F says:

Fabulous cards Jennifer and those stamps are gorgeous. I have to say I think heat embossing is my favourite stamping technique. I still loving watching the magic of the powder melting and becoming shiny.

  50. Marianne says:

Gorgeous! I don’t really have a favourite technique. I do like to try different things, though, even though my crafting time is very limited. I’ve been trying to stamp using coloured inks, but don’t always get the crisp impression I’m after. But there’s a MISTI making its way to me right now (BD present from my DH) and I’m hoping this will help me become more confident and get better results. Keeping my fingers crossed it will arrive before the end of the month, just in time for my birthday.
