Stamping with water on a Distress-Inked-paper is a technique that I have loved for many years. I felt it was time to break it out again! Distress Ink works best for “stamping with water” since it reacts with water. However, you can try it with whichever dye inks you may have.

For all three examples, I applied Distress Ink to a piece of Neenah White Cardstock, covering it completely. I used a heavy hand when applying the ink because the more ink you use, the better the results. I spritzed the Peony and Dahlia rubber stamps from Impress with water from about a foot or so above and stamped it on the paper. The results? Magical.

You want to make sure to get a nice, even coverage of water when you mist onto the stamp from far above. Then, place the stamp on top of the inked paper, letting it sit for a few seconds before removing it. I did not use any ink on the stamp – just water. You can experiment with other sprays you may have, but I think plain water and pearlized water (created by adding Perfect Pearls to water) works the best. Remember, as it dries, the results will intensify.

For the sentiment, I die-cut the Hero Arts Hello die from a piece of glitter cardstock from My Favorite Things. Since this card is a simple design, I used a striped embossing folder from We R Memory Keepers on a piece of white cardstock to add some interest along the bottom of the cards.

For a finishing touch, I die cut super tiny hearts from a Hero Arts die using the same glitter cardstock and rounded the corners of the card using the We R Memory Keeper’s Corner Chomper. After rounding the corners, I noticed the edges were a bit fuzzy, so I used an emery nail file to smooth out any rough spots.

Since I had all the supplies out, I decided to make matching envelopes. Many people ask what envelopes I use – I like to use envelopes from Hero Arts and Memory Box. I used coordinating ink colors to stamp the flower image on the flap or the front of the envelopes. You could also stamp on the inside of the card.

I hope you give this stamping with water technique a try. It works great with background stamps as well.

These cards are fabulous. I love the colors and the fact that they are so simple to make. I usually stamp with black ink and color the images in. I would love to have a Big Shot to be able to make different cards.

  2. Jackie B says:

Once again you showed me something I’d never thought of doing. I have a large dahlia stamp and wasn’t happy with any of my tries. Now I want to do this technique. One of my new favorite stamping techniques is to stamp in distress ink and use a water brush to bring in the color from the edge. I love trying new things thanks for sharing.

  3. Cheryl H says:

What beautiful stamps!! I like stamping with distress and then watercoloring the images. Makes me look like I know how to draw!

  4. jengd says:

Utterly gorgeous cards! I love the technique and the knock-out colors you used. I’m not sure I’m much of a technique-gal but I do break out EP pretty frequently.

  5. Teresa A says:

I love to heat emboss. It looks like magic watching the powder turn. The technique t you showed was so simple but made for an elegant card. Thank you for sharing.

  6. Debbie Eslinger says:

I am not brave when it comes to stamping technique I stay pretty close to the road, I love using embossing powder

  7. Susieq says:

Oh my, these cards are beautiful. Christmas cards would be great made this way and easy to mass produce.

  8. Robin Allen says:

I can’t wait to try this technique! My favorite technique is a really old one. It is putting drops of ink into a mound of shaving cream, swirling the ink through the shaving cream and then lightly tapping the front of card stock into the swirls of ink in the shaving cream. Maybe you can (or already have) made a video of this.

  9. Nancy Lynn Kenny (Monahan) says:

Hey Jennifer….the technique you used on your card is one that I have not seen before, so thank you so much for sharing it with us…..I can’t wait to try it.

I am fairly new to card making but the one technique I have fun doing is the bleach technique. I love the effect it has on dark cardstock. I also love to use bleach gel because you can dip your stamp directly into the bleach gel and then stamp away! AND, I recently found a link on how to make your own bleach gel because I personally think it is too expensive for what you get. Check it out, here:

    Thanks Jennifer….you’re the best!

I would have to say the tried and true technique for me is distress watercolor stamping. Coloring with the distress inks (pads or markers) and then spritz and stamp. The distress inks are a must have for any papercrafter. Glad I got mine early in the game because I use them all the time in all sorts of ways. Thanks for the video and the chance!! =) Have a super happy day!!

  28. Laura R- Chicago says:

    Stunning. I love it.

When you use your ink pads like that to cover an entire page… what is the benefit of doing this instead of using colored stock?

Also- how long do the Distress ink pads generally lasts before needing to be reinked?

Thanks! And, I’m totally copying this idea!

  29. Lettie says:

I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming.

Also, wanted to let you know that the link to Memory Box, found in the verbiage below doesn’t seem to work.

WOW. Again you have stunned me with a new technique I can’t wait to try! And yes I agree with you about the great folks at IMPRESS. I used to have relatives on the other side of their locations and I would always spend a ton of time and peruse their stores and buy from them online. Still look forward to their newsletters, though I am 4 hours away now. You have me “hooked” on MFT presently. Keep up the great work! I give your website to any and all that I find who stamp.

  34. donna says:

Gorgeous Jennifer! The stamps you used are really spectacular. I would love to win either stamp. I love embossing. The texture on the card adds so much in my opinion.

    Thanks for all your inspiration!!

  37. michelle sullivan says:

you always ROCK it J. M!!! The tiniest detail changes everything and really pulls this card together(the silver glitter strip) I must say I love water coloring and can’t get enough of the T. Holtz distress inks/paints as just a versatile product and the possibilities are endless. 🙂

  38. Dee says:

I guess I’m like so many others here; heat embossing is still my favorite, it is totaly Magical to watch the transformation from powder to raised embossed print.

  39. sandra ross says:

The dahlia stamp is gorgeous! Would love to win it! These cards are simply beautiful — I’m in love with Distress Inks. My current favorite stamping method is using the MISTI — I’m relatively new at stamping and have a difficult time getting a good image with many stamps. The MISTI is a great solution.

  40. Carol Rossouw says:

What beautiful cards and a must-try technique! I’m rather new to stamping & have just done plain stamping and embossing so far. I do love the multi-step stamp sets though, & your tutorial on those lovely Altenew vintage roses stamps was very helpful for that.

What an AWESOME technique. I definitely need to give this a try. Your cards turned out AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-mazing!!! You are a true inspiration. My favorite technique right now is watercoloring. It’s such a forgiving technique…even when you mess up, you can make something of it. I have used many of your tips on watercoloring. As always, I’m very thankful for all of your wonderful tips.

  45. Trina Flynn says:

This is such a unique technique! I could see covering a background in sentiments, diagonally, with this technique! Would be so unexpected from the recipient and they’d love it, I’m sure! Thanks for the chance to win!!

  47. Brithzi Sandy says:

This is a new technique to me. Love the simplicity and the wonderful results. Thanks for “revisiting” this technique. Both flower stamps are just gorgeous.

  48. linda g says:

I’ve done lots of marker to stamp, mist, then stamp and love that technique, but I’ve never done just water on a colored background. And I’ve been stamping for years! Thanks for the new technique!

  49. Shelly says:

Thanks for the great video! I sometimes forget that I have distress inks and then you always provide me with inspiring ways to use them again! I still get giddy when doing heat embossing! I am amazed at the transformation from powder to shine time and time again!
