Video: Mixed Sentiment Backgrounds

Hi! Today’s video show creating a background of mixed sentiments. This is a great way to stretch your stamps and get a new look! I created nine cards – oh my!

Creating a background of mixed sentiments is a great way to stretch your sentiment stamps for a new look. Here, I mixed several greetings together to form a background... making sure to leave a small gap to add a die cut word afterward. This technique is great for mass-producing cards… so I made NINE! Most are for teachers for the upcoming year. However, you could add a person’s name in the open spot with die cut, sticker or stamped letters. Personalized cards are the best!

I used a mix of sentiments from various sets… all with messages that basically say “you are great”. You could change this up to be all “thanks” greetings… or “get well soon”… or just “hello”. The possibilities are endless! I encourage you to dig through your stamps and see what background you can come up with! I used these stamps for my background: You Rule (a new teacher set), I Like You, You’re One In a Million, Awesome (this is a great new set!), You’re So Nice, You Are Pretty Much the Best Ever (isn’t that greeting the best?!), You Rock and World’s Best.

For most of the cards, I added a “teacher” die cut. To give the die cut dimension and to make it stand out, I covered it with three layers of embossing powder. On the pink and grey card, I used three layers of silver glitter embossing powder. I love that look…

I embellished most of the cards with die cut stars. (These stars are also covered with three layers of embossing powder. It is amazing the difference that makes!) Finally, I clear embossed diagonal stripes along the edge of each notecard for a bit of fun. I gotta say – that diagonal stripe background stamp is a must-have.

Here is a close look at some of the cards. I made one of the cards for my brother… personalizing it with Mama Elephant Inline die cut letters.

This card design is one you can change up and make work with whatever products you have on hand. Love that! If you are interested in seeing another video with a similar technique, check out THIS one on cluster stamping.

I hope this inspires you to try mixing up some sentiments for a fun background!

Thanks for the practical tips. I tried embossing some small die cuts today, and got so frustrated smudging off the powder and burning my fingers! 🙂 Good to know the gel pen will hold embossing powder, too.

  9. Dixie says:

You are so right! We need to spoil teachers and thank them for all they do. I’m a retired middle school teacher, and I think I’ll make some cards for my friends still teaching. Thanks for the terrific idea!

  10. Mary Schmidt says:

Why are you using more Versamark between the layers of embossing? You can add another layer of embossing powder onto the embossed images while the embossing is still hot. You don’t need to use more Versamark ink between layers. The embossing powder will adhere to the hot melted powder. Just heat the initial embossing powder until melted, quickly add more powder while the image is hot, and heat the added embossing powder. Just repeat for additional layers.
