I really like the look of shimmer papers but sometimes have trouble finding the right color for my project. Today I show how to create your own… and make it even better with masking.

For all of my cards, I created a floral cluster using the new WPlus9 Southern Summer Florals 1 and WPlus9 Southern Summer Florals 2 Stamp Sets. These layering sets are gorgeous and easy to use. (For the ink colors featured, check the thumbnails at the end of this post.) Because I used my MISTI Stamping Tool, I was able to stamp several pieces exactly the same in exactly the same position.

I next created a mask from Inkadinkado Masking Paper to cover the flower cluster. (Watch the video to see how I did this!) Using a Mini Ink Blending Tool, I applied a thin layer of Tonic Mother of Pearl Nuvo Embellishment Mousse over the whole piece. The pearly shine that results is lovely! And the mask protects the flowers and gives a layered look.

That oh-so-perfect “thanks” die cut is from the WPlus9 Basic Greetings Die Set and the “you’re the best” sentiment is from the WPlus9 Basic Labels Stamp Set. I added lots of details with my Sakura Stardust Glitter Pen and Tonic Morning Dew Nuvo Drops (ideal of white dots!).

The mousse also comes in lots of pretty colors. Here I used the Tonic Peony Pink Nuvo Embellishment Mousse on a white cardstock background. This time I didn’t blend it in completely so I could see the variation in the background.

For my next card, I masked the flowers and stamped with a border image from the WPlus9 Borders & Backgrounds 4 Stamp Set. I then added a “halo” of shine around the flowers with Tonic Mother of Pearl Nuvo Mousse. This technique would be great for one layer cards.

Check out that shine…

The greeting again is from the WPlus9 Basic Greetings Die and WPlus9 Basic Labels Stamp Sets. To make the die cut sentiment stand out, I glued together a white and pink die cut but slightly off-set them.

You can also apply the Tonic Mother of Pearl Nuvo Embellishment Mousse over stamping. The result looks like a vintage wrapping paper or stationery. I love it!

Such a unique look. Would be great for a background.

You could also skip the masking and just apply the Tonic Mother of Pearl Nuvo Embellishment Mousse directly to a notecard for added interest. (I did just mask the edges of the card so the pink cardstock showed.) I simply adhered the flower cluster that I had cut out to create my mask. Oh – and the greeting again is from the WPlus9 Basic Greetings Die Set. I like that I can use a couple of the words together, too.

With the mousse, the coloring changes depending on how you tilt in in the light.

If you don’t have the mousse products, you can try this technique with shimmer spritzes or pigment powders.

  37. Dottie J says:

I am using masking more and more these days. I think it is due to some growth in seeing different possibilities with the stamps that I have, and that is probably because Jennifer is so good at teaching techniques and encouraging us to experiment with what we have. Wplus9 might be my absolute favorite company. I love Dawn’s designs, especially the florals. Winning anything W+9 would be a treat!

  38. Lisa Lou says:

I’ve only used masking a couple of times but I like the idea of stamping a grouping then cuting the mask out as a whole. This technique is a lot less fussy. I love the mousse. Will need to put that on my wish list. Thank you for all you do.

  39. I love watching your videos and reading your posts. No I have not yet used the masking technique because I am so new to card making. You make it look an experience I want to add to my “can do list”. Thank you for acquainting us with new or how to do better cards.

I crafted with my girlfriend last weekend & we played with them for the first time… we LOVED it.. such a great product and lots of uses… thanks again.. another great video…

  42. Casie says:

I have the masking paper, but almost always use it with my die cutter. Have to try this technique using a traced image.

  43. Donna W says:

I am very old school and old too. I have never masked but have stamps that really need to be masked together.
so I bought some masking sheets and I am trying to attempt to learn the proper way to mask and make a beautiful card because I did a good job. Wish me luck.

  44. Irasema says:

I have seen so many crafters use various masking techniques but I have not used it myself. I have the masking sheets and will give it a go soon!

  45. Masking is new to me, because I didn’t want to take the time to create masks before. (I’m very slow at fussy cutting.) However, I now use coordinating dies for creating the mask, and I really like it. I don’t mind the small white edge that comes from the die.

  46. chi says:

HI- I have used masking techniques with stampendous sets when the stamp comes with the coordinating stencil. I use the cut out pcs of the stencil as the mask so the stencil is actually multifunctional 🙂 -. I also use art masking fluid in more refined detail areas and also to design or handwrite as a resist technique/

  47. Memoriesbymanda says:

I do very basic masking. I love this idea. I bought one jar of tonic mousse at SENZ last week. I’m not happy with the colour I chose ( I tried to get a neutral to start with then build up my collection of pretty colours) now I want the one you used. I love the background stamp you used (the zig zags), that would be my choice if I won.

  48. Samantha says:

I just love your cards, and they are beautiful tho. I still haven’t tried a masking technique myself. I have all supplies but have been afraid to take a chance and using then. Thank you for sharing your creativity with us

  49. KRISTEN says:

Yes, masking is an old technique we used way back when to show movement and to super impose flowers behind a fence or cats in a window (even before the PIP came out). Glad to see the 3M masking tape. I used to use the ECLIPSE (no longer available) tape from Judi-kins or the old “post -it” notes. Thanks again for a wonderful post and GREAT IDEAS!

  50. Colleen Halpern says:

I don’t do much masking, But I really like the look of these cards. Thanks for the chance to win.
