Layered Heat Embossed Backgrounds + Blog Hop + GIVEAWAYS

Hello! Today I am sharing a really cool technique of layering heat embossing to create gorgeous backgrounds. I also am part of a blog hop celebrating a month dedicated to stamping… STAMPtember®!

I recently shared a video were I combined heat embossing and die cutting to create unique backgrounds. (You can find this video HERE.) Well, I had so much fun with the technique that I decided to create heat embossed backgrounds with stamping and stencils.

Each of my examples start with a background of heat embossing. I simply pressed my VersaMark Ink pad onto cardstock to cover it, and then added a layer of embossing powder. Once cool, I repeated the process. This gives a smooth, shiny background.

For my first card, I covered cardstock with two layers of silver embossing powder. Directly on top of this, I applied VersaMark Ink over my Simon Says Stamp Stained Glass Stencil and heat embossed with Wendy Vecchi Garden Patina Embossing Powder. The blue embossing powder melts into the silver, giving a shiny look with a bit of texture. So pretty!

I created a window with a Hero Arts Nesting Hearts Infinity Die and heat embossed “hello” from the Simon Says Stamp Live Well Stamp Set on Hot Off The Press Heat Resistant Acetate. The sentiment strip is from the Simon Says Stamp You Got This Stamp Set. And the little red heart? I just wanted a pop of color.

For this next example, I started with a Wendy Vecchi Garden Patina Embossing Powder double-heat embossed background. I stamped the new Simon Says Stamp Kaleidoscope Leaves Stamp with VersaMark Ink on top and heat embossed with Wendy Vecchi Leaf Green Embossing Powder. It looks a bit bright here, but it is fun in real life. The sentiment is again from the Simon Says Stamp Live Well and You Got This Stamp Sets.

You can use any embossing powders for this technique! Here I heat embossed the Simon Says Stamp Good Reading Stamp with WOW Verdigris Embossing Powder on top of a silver background. I also used the Verdigris Embossing Powder for the “Hugs” sentiment from the Simon Says Stamp Live Well Stamp Set. The remainder of the sentiment is again from the Simon Says Stamp You Got This Stamp Set.

If you don’t have colored embossing powders, you can also layer silver and gold. For this background I gold heat embossed over the Simon Says Stamp Holiday Tree Medallion Stencil on a silver embossed background. It ends up so smooth! This would be great for a holiday card.

I changed things up a little bit on this next card. After stamping the Simon Says Stamp Oranate Stamp with VersaMark Ink on a silver embossed background, I added three colors of embossing powder… allowing them to blend into each other.

For the “together” message, I stacked a few Simon Says Stamp Together die cuts and added them to the card over the window. The sentiment is from the Simon Says Stamp Together Stamp Set.

Sometimes it is fun to combine bold embossing powders! Here, I heat embossed the Simon Says Stamp Oranate Stamp with Wendy Vecchi Garden Patina Embossing Powder over Wendy Vecchi Cactus Flower Embossing Powder. So fun!

Hoping this card makes someone smile…

This technique also works with white embossing powder. This background shows  Wendy Vecchi Cactus Flower Embossing Powder heat embossed on top of a white heat embossed background. I again use the gorgeous Simon Says Stamp Ornate Stamp.

I stacked several Simon Says Stamp Painted Hello die cuts and silver heat embossed the top layer. This is a great way to make your sentiment stand out!

In the video I also show that these techniques work well for smaller images, too. This first features a mini stencil – the Simon Says Stamp Damask Stencil. I heat embossed the stenciled image and Simon Says Stamp Together sentiment with WOW Verdigris Embossing Powder on top of silver.

And… finally!… one last example. I stamped a Simon Says Stamp Fractile Leaves Stamp with Versmark Ink on a gold heat embossed background. I carefully applied several colored embossing powders. Works great! The sentiment is from the Simon Says Stamp Thoughtful Messages Stamp Set.

  1. Wow! Those are beautiful! I never would have thought to do one embossing layer over another! What a great effect! Thanks for sharing!

  2. Lots of great products in this release. I don’t have an intricate stencil in my crafty things yet. So even if there are a lot of things to point out as fave, I would like to save up for that Stained Glass stencil. Thank you for another great technique!

  3. The amazing things one can do with embossing powders :). My fave stamp is that ornate background stamp….which is sold out already lol.

  4. Beautiful cards. I love heat embossing. My favorite item from this release is the Ornate Background stamp (or the Debra stencil–hard to choose). This entire release is spectacular.

  5. My favorite is Ornate background, but each and every one of your cards is perfect and amazing and unique. Thanks for the great inspiration and for fantastic giveaway!

  6. Jennifer – these are amazing and you are always so inspiring! You and SSS always make my cards look SO much better. Thank you for all you guys do!

  7. I absolutely love to watch your videos as you have so many amazing ideas and techniques. It is hard to pick just one product to pick from but I really like the Ornate stamp set, the SSS Debra stencil, and the Stained Glass stencil. If I had all the money in the world, I would love to purchase so much more. Thank you for sharing all of your wonderful ideas with us and how much you care for those around in need and your kindness.

  8. I love your work! I find it amazing that you come up with a different technique week after week and each time it is fabulous. If i had to choose one product from the release, it would be the ever so popular ornate background stamp. If I win the $50 gift certificate to SSS, I would match that amount and give $100 in gift certificates to a cardmaker in Houston. I was visiting my niece who lives in Houston when Harvey hit. Although she had no storm damage herself, many others weren’t so lucky and it likely will be months before they can live in their houses again. I would like to give a cardmaker the gift certificates so that they can create in spite of their losses. I am sure my niece or the local papercrafting store could help me find someone who could use the gift.

  9. So excited to use the ornate background stamp. Had it in my cart at SSS. By the time I checked out ot was sold out. I’m so disappointed!

  10. I love the Christmas Sweater background stamp. I am obsessed with the Scandinavian looking patterns! Love all of your cards! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

  11. My favorite stamp set is If The Hat Fits – what a great release. I absolutely love your technique of double embossing and can’t wait to try it tonight!

  17. I don’t even know where to begin with my comments. I’d look at a card, think it was my favorite and then move to the next one just to love it equally!!! The new SSS stamps and stencils are amazing. I especially like the Ornate one. But then my heart has always loved leaves so I want to say that one is my favorite part. You and Heidi have just made the choices to hard to make!!! 🙂

  18. The new SSS ornate background stamp is my FAVORITE new product from this release. I like the new embossing techniques you shared and will be giving those a try soon! Thanks for the inspiration.

  19. I love the ornate background stamp, it is beautiful like your cards. Thank you so much for this video. I always look forward to your you tubes and great ideas.

  20. Jennifer, you never fail to amaze and inspire me. I saw the layered embossing several years ago at a Craft Show, but your cards are way past anything I saw in the past – Thanks so much for sharing.

  21. Love this technique! All the cards are just beautiful. I can’t wait to try this. Great new releases from SSS! I really like the Ornate Background stamp too, but I think my fave is the Under The Sea set.
