Before I get into today’s options for quick shaker cards, I wanted to show how I altered the Mama Elephant The Cats Meow Stamp a bit. Almost all of my crafty friends are cat people. But I have a dog! So….I thought it would be fun to alter one of the cats from the Mama Elephant The Cats Meow Stamp Set into a pup. See her in the back row? That’s my Foxy. 🙂

I can’t draw well, but it worked ok! Don’t be afraid to alter stamped images to suit your needs. Now I have my doggie in a sea of kitties. Kinda like me in a sea of cat people. 🙂

For all of my cards, I used the Mama Elephant The Cats Meow Stamp Set. The balloons are such fun – and are from the new Mama Elephant Celebration Balloons Stamp Set. For the “group hugs” and “squad goals” sentiments, I used the Mama Elephant Girlfriends Stamp Set. And the frame for the shaker window? That’s the Mama Elephant Framed Tags Die. I did simple Copic coloring with YR04, YR09, RV55, RV66, R27, C1, C3, C5, E35, E37, E44, E42, B02, B04, YR21, YG25, YG17, YR24, and YR14. However, you can use any coloring method.

Now on to the shaker options…

#1: NO-BULK AND QUICK

My first shaker card is super fast and no-bulk. I simply created my shaker card with no foam tape but rather regular strong double sided tape. The sequins can still move a bit but many stay at the top. I like this option because it is fast. And no-bulk is a bonus! Oh – I use the Hero Arts Acetate Cards to cut up for my shaker windows.

#2: NO-BULK & LESS MOVEMENT

My second shaker option has even less movement. I used some strong Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive to secure some  of the sequins in place so they would always stay in view. Also, many of the loose sequins get stuck on them so there are always sequins “floating” in the air. And, again, very little bulk!

#3: TULLE

I recently have been using tulle instead of acetate for shaker cards. And boy is this simple! Not only is tulle inexpensive, but you don’t have to worry about static. The tulle allows the sequins to shake and move, and there is little bulk. Win-win!

#4: TRADITIONAL SHAKER

When people usually make shaker cards, they use foam tape so the goodies inside can shake around freely. This does add a bit of bulk, but it is worth it! I do still use strong Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive to hold a few of the sequins in place so they always stay in view. Also, many of the loose sequins get stuck on them so there are always sequins “moving” in the air. I find this key for traditional shaker cards.

#5: FAKE IT

Not a fan of shaker cards? Short on time? Just fake it! Here I created a window with the Mama Elephant Framed Tags Die but just adhered little sequin stars with Ranger Multi Medium Matte Adhesive . There is no movement, but the card still looks like a party. 🙂

By the way, on all of the cards, I covered the balloons with Clear Wink of Stella for shimmer and Glossy Accents for shine. This makes a HUGE difference! Also, I used my Black Glaze Pen to add a bit of shine and dimension on the eyes of all the animals.

  1. nice video……. what is the tool that you use to stick the sequins on?? Thank you for all you do.

      1. It’s a jewel picker, many large craft stores online or in your area sell them. Forewarning, there’s tackiness on each end of the jewel picker, if either starts losing its tackiness just use warm water and mild dishwashing soap to gently clean the ends and allow to air dry. Don’t try to remove any of the tacky material on each end, otherwise you’ll have a worthless craft tool!

  2. I adore your coloring skills so much. Thanks for great ideas on non bulk shaker cards. I’ve only made shaker cards using foam so far, but I have to give the new techniques a try.

  3. I like the idea of the Tulle and Fake Shaker cards….I’m going to add those technique on my to do list

  6. so super cute!! I love how you made the dog, you are so good at that kind of thing!! I remember you did the same with a Halloween image and turned it into Christmas lights, so super clever!

  7. Thank you for this video. I love these ideas for shaker cards. I always mess up while adhering the frame – it’ll end up crooked. Then I’ll have to tear it up and adhere again. I love the idea of totally faking it.

    1. That used to happen to me all the time too. Then, I realized that shaker cards are supposed to be fun, so why not REALLY mount them crooked. That way, it looks deliberate and adds another layer of wackiness to the card! Ha!

  8. Wow, lots of great info. I love these options, as I don’t really like the look of foam tape from the side of the shaker cards. Thanks for the great ideas!

  21. Hi Jennifer….love the cards! I have not made a shaker card but I am feeling inspired. Could you please tell us what the tool was that you used to pick up the sequins….I don’t see anything in your supply list for it. Thank You again Jennifer….

  22. You are not alone… I am not allergic but I hate the way they can jump up on everything, so I am a dog person as well. My husband absolutely hates cats and has found a game he like s to play called “Cats in a Blender”. The intended point of the game is to save the cats, but when he plays he figures out how he can blend the most cats, lol. We are both dog people. I love your idea to change one of them. So cute!!!
