Color Blocking Techniques + FREE GIFT

Welcome back! Today I am sharing several fun ways to do color blocking for bold card designs. These techniques are fun because they work with any stamps!

Color blocking is a fun way to create bold, graphic cards with any stamps. Be sure to watch my video… I show several different ways to achieve the look. Hopefully one works for you! These cards were inspired by an enamel pin I have, and the wonderful work of Laura Bassen. (Be sure to check her out!)

On all of the cards, I applied colorful Altenew Ink with Picket Fence Life Changing Brushes while working on a Waffle Flower Water Media Mat. This worked really well!

I started my first card by white heat embossing the Simon Says Stamp Center Cut Kaleidoscope Stamp on white cardstock. I then cut the background up into eight pieces and I inked each piece a different color. I then reassembled the pieces onto a card and added a few pearls for dimension.

The sentiment at the center is from the new SSS CZ Design Good Job Mama Stamp Set. This set is FANTASTIC. Such encouraging sentiments for all the mommas out there!

You can achieve a similiar look with masking instead of cutting up the background. This features the Simon Says Stamp Center Cut Heart Stamp Set and SSS CZ Design Good Job Mama Stamp Set.

By the way, the Simon Says Stamp Deco Heart Die heart cuts out the center of this background perfectly!

Here is another example showing simple color blocking with masking. Along the masked portion where the sentiment is, I white heat embossed lots of floral images. I then added inks for bold color. All of these images are from the Simon Says Stamp Incredible Woman Stamp Set.

Another way to do color blocking is to cut a gap between the pieces. Here, I used the Simon Says Stamp Delicate Flowers Stamp Set for the white heat embossing and a sentiment from the SSS CZ Design Good Job Mama Stamp Set.

I added the pieces with craft foam behind them for dimension.

Here is another cut-up color blocked background. My favorite! All of the images are from the Simon Says Stamp Delicate Flowers Stamp Set.

I also filled in the floral images with Tonic Aqua Shimmer Pens for shine.

My last example shows lots of masking! I first white heat embosses the sentiments from the SSS CZ Design Good Job Mama Stamp Set. I then stamped over that with Versamark Ink and the flowers from the Simon Says Stamp Delicate Flowers Stamp Set. Finally, I added lots of colorful ink with masking.

You can see the subtle flowers in the background. The Versamark Ink somewhat resists the color on top.

I love this that Cathy Zielske wrote about the Good Job Mama Stamp Set:

“Good Job Mama is the result of a collaboration with one of my crafty mentors, Jennifer McGuire. Jennifer and I worked together to come up with the concept behind the set. We both wanted to offer a set that women could use to create realistic cards of support for their fellow mamas out there. Motherhood is many things ranging from ridiculously awesome to extremely challenging, and everything in between. This new stamp set is about offering acknowledgment to your fellow mamas out there. Sometimes simply being seen and acknowledged in a real way by someone who loves you can really lift you up. At least that’s been my experience in life.”

  1. Such vibrant colors and powerful cards. Mothers need all the support we can get and give. Parenting is the most difficult adventure we will take but it will hopefully be just as rewarding! Thank you for sharing your cards Jennifer!

  2. Fab cards, Jennifer…the bright, bold colors work so well with these designs–they show the white embossing to perfection. Thanks, too, for the video tutorial with all of your tips.

  3. Love these color blocked cards. I’ve never heard of this before so I learned a new technique to try.

  4. They are all so pretty!! Fab technique. And a great tip for centreing background stamps! Always struggle with that. Thank you Jennifer 😘❤️

  5. All of these cards are so lovely! I love the bright vibrant colours and all the different ways to add them to your cards!

  6. Love the first 2 cards the best, so pretty. Thanks for showing us how we can do this too. I am loving the mat as well.

  7. These cards are colorful as well as encouraging! The tips you gave on how to use this technique are fabulous… and so are YOU. I hope you know that MANY of us see all the good in YOU. You, Jennifer Maguire, are one “mama” who is making a very positive difference in the world while also being a great mom to your kiddos and friend to those you know.

  8. Love this idea and the colours are so much fun! Will definitely have to try it. Thanks for all your fabulous videos!

  9. Amazing cards and what a fun technique. Thank you for sharing your talent and all of your fabulous ideas but most of all Thank Youv for all you do to inspire all of us out here in the crafty world.

  10. Fun cards! However I am frustrated. After seeing this video I was inspired to order some of the Mother’s Day stamps you used from Simon Says Stamp. Knowing how very quickly they can run out of supplies you use in your videos and with Mother’s Day fast approaching (May 12), I immediately ordered them. The video came out on April 25th and I order the stamps the same day. It is now May 1 and Simon Says Stamp is still “processing” my order. As I must mail my Mother’s Day cards, I am now looking for other options for Mother’s Day cards. Would you consider trying to give your viewers more lead time for Holiday ideas and products, especially with Simon Says Stamp products, so we can get the things we order from them in time for us to use them. Thank you.
