Smooth Alcohol Ink Backgrounds (Alcohol Pearls) + GIVEAWAY
Welcome back. Today I am sharing how to create smooth backgrounds with alcohol inks. I will focus on the new-and-oh-so-amazing Tim Holtz Alcohol Pearls Inks – love them! I have lots of examples showing how you can use these inks to create smooth, blended backgrounds with little effort.

You can use Tim Holtz Alcohol Pearls Inks just like you use normal Alcohol Inks… however they give a gorgeous pearl-like shine. I am in love! I will use them more in future videos, but today I am focusing on how to create smooth backgrounds with the Tim Holtz Alcohol Pearls Inks, a straight edge and a long piece of felt. (And yes, you can always use traditional Alcohol Inks.)
I have lots and lots of examples! The reason? These backgrounds are fast and easy to make. And it is fun to get a different look out of alcohol inks. In my video I share the trick for covering backgrounds with the smooth color… be sure to watch it.
On all of the cards, I used Tim Holtz Alcohol Pearls Inks and Ranger Alcohol Blending Solution on Tim Holtz Heavyweight Yupo Paper.
My first example shows diagonal blending of Tim Holtz Alcohol Pearls Inks on Tim Holtz Heavyweight Yupo Paper. I really like the blending of color and the look of texture. I kept the card simple by only adding a stacked Simon Says Stamp Dahlia Stem die cut and sentiment.
It is hard to see in the photo, but the sentiment on this card in foiled! I used the new Simon Says Stamp Sentiment Strips. These pre-printed sentiments are foilable! I used Thermoweb Gold Foil and my Royal Sovereign Laminator. Worked great.
Here is another example of a blended background… but this time in a bright rainbow. (I really like how the Tim Holtz Alcohol Pearls Inks are so bright and happy.) This is a look I have tried to get so many times with watercolor… but was never able to. This was effortless!
I added a Simon Says Stamp You Got This die cut along with another foiled Simon Says Stamp Sentiment Strip.
After adding alcohol ink to a large piece of felt, you can do several pieces! The last pieces will be softer… and I love love love this! I added stacked Simon Says Stamp Outline Clustered Leaves die cuts, a foiled Simon Says Stamp Sentiment Strip, and gemstones.
I look forward to using this technique to create more rainbow backgrounds like this next one! And the rainbow seemed to be the perfect background for a stacked Simon Says Stamp Outline Floral Cross die cut and Simon Says Stamp Tiny Words Faith sentiment.
It is also verrrrry simple to create scallop or zigzag blended backgrounds with Alcohol Pearls Inks on Tim Holtz Heavyweight Yupo Paper. Such a unique look! I wish you could see the shimmer…
I kept the card design simple by adding only a stacked Simon Says Stamp Dahlia Stem die cut and Simon Says Stamp Tiny Words Faith sentiment.
Here is another zig zag example… but with a Simon Says Stamp Amazing sentiment.
Here is a background created by dragging the alcohol inks in a wave. I went over and over the background several times to create the texture-y look. I then die cut the panel with the new Simon Says Stamp Filigree Heart Die and added a foiled Simon Says Stamp Sentiment Strip. This card came together surprisingly fast!
Here is another simple card using the Simon Says Stamp Filigree Heart Die. This time I put the alcohol ink piece behind the die cut. I also added a foiled Simon Says Stamp Sentiment Strip.
And similar card… using the Simon Says Stamp Filigree Bunny Die and a Simon Says Stamp Bunny Wishes sentiment.

My next examples step things up a bit…
For this colorful background, I applied Tim Holz Alcohol Lift Ink with a Mini Ink Blending Tool over a Simon Says Stamp Triangle Blast Stencil onto one of my pearled pieces. I really love the subtle look!
I topped the card off with a stacked Simon Says Stamp Triangle Element die cut and foiled Simon Says Stamp Sentiment Strips.
My next card is my favorite. But combining lots of great products, I was able to create an elegant card. I heat embossed an inked background with Hero Arts White Satin Pearl Embossing Powder and the new Simon Says Stamp Pretty Peonies Stamp. It is subtle but pearly!
Here you can see all the pearly goodness in the background. I also added a stacked Simon Says Stamp Outline Floral Cross die cut with a Simon Says Stamp Tiny Words Faith sentiment and a few gemstones.
This alcohol ink technique works great for ombre or gradient backgrounds. Here, I just white heat embossed over the background with the Simon Says Stamp Geometric Pattern Stamp Set and a Simon Says Stamp Amazing sentiment.
Here is another example of white heat embossing over an alcohol pearled background. This time I used the Simon Says Stamp Pretty Peonies Stamp along with the Simon Says Stamp Thinking of You Die.
For the background on my next example, I started by heat embossing the Simon Says Stamp Pretty Peonies Stamp on Tim Holtz Heavyweight Yupo Paper with Hero Arts White Satin Pearl Embossing Powder. I then applied the Alcohol Pearls on top. Once it was dry, I “colored” in the flowers with my Tim Holtz Alcohol Ink Blending Pen filled with Ranger Alcohol Blending Solution. This “lifts” the color away.
I added a stacked Simon Says Stamp Spring Blessings die cut… along with Grafix Platinum Vellum circle die cuts and a Simon Says Stamp Tiny Words Faith sentiment strip.
Look at that pearly shine…
When I removed the color from the background of the last card, I put the ink onto this background. This is a technique I showed in THIS video.
I used the same technique for this next card. I also flicked on drops of rubbing alcohol to create the splattered look. This features the Simon Says Stamp Blossoming Stamp Set and Simon Says Stamp Spring Blessings Die.
