Pop-Up Shadow Box Cards

Hello! Today I am sharing a fun pop-up shadow box card design. I have lots of examples for you to show that you can do this technique with many products you likely already have.

I have shared my version of shadow box cards in the past. (You can see the video HERE.) However, today I have a different version! This shadow box is designed to pop up and give dimension upon taking it out of the envelope. Each card varies a bit in the design, so I encourage you to watch the video for dimensions and how-to info.

My first card measures at normal 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ when flattened. But when it comes out of the envelope, it pops up to show layers of deep dimension. I used Hero Arts Cardstock (on all of today’s examples) and Hero Arts Oval Infinity Dies (SSS | HA) to form a window on the front. I added a piece stamped with the new Hero Arts Bubbles Stamp (SSS | HA) on the inside and a Hero Arts March My Monthly Hero Kit sentiment across the front.

The fish and leaves are from the Hero Arts Pet Goldfish Stamp Set (SSS | HA). Aren’t they the cutest?

You can see here that the middle fish is floating in the middle of the card. I did that with a little piece of acetate. (Watch the video!)

Here you can see how the card is scored and folded to create “springs” on the side. These flatten when in an envelope… but pop up when taken out.

… and it fits in an envelope nicely…

This next card is a bit of a variation of the last. This time the sides stick out a bit when the card is flattened… and it pops up with a bit less dimension. I added a piece cut with the new Hero Arts Fish and Bubbles Confetti Die (SSS | HA) to the front and used the Hero Arts Fishy Stamp & Dies (SSS | HA) for the rest.

Both of the fish are “floating” in the window… thanks to two small pieces of acetate.

Here you can see the sides of the card. This is a bit different than the last card.

And, again, this flattens and fits nicely into a regular envelope.

My next card is 5 1/2″ x 5 1/2″ when flattened. I used the Hero Arts Goldfish in a Bowl Dies (SSS | HA) to cut a window on the front and to add a die cut to the inside. I stamped the Hero Arts Ocean Waves Stamp (SSS | HA) onto the die cut and added a sentiment from the Hero Arts March My Monthly Hero Kit. The leaves and fish are from the Hero Arts Betta Fish Stamp Set (SSS | HA). I added the fish with a Mini Action Wobbler so it wiggles and moves!

I also added Tonic Aqua Shimmer Pen to the fish for a bit of sparkle.

Here you can see the “springs” I formed on the sides in order for it to pop up when taking it out of the envelope.

My last example uses dies and stamps from the new Hero Arts March My Monthly Hero Kit. This aquarium die is perfect for this pop-up shadow box technique! I added acetate to the window to mimic glass and to add support.

The inside features a piece created with Distress Oxide Ink blending… and a bit of Hero Arts March My Monthly Hero Kit stamping.

This design works great with window dies like this one.

  20. Great box cards. I have to say, box cards are something I avoid making, as there’s not nearly enough room to write. They are, however, fun for my friends that leave all their cards up as decorations.

  21. As always you did a fabulous job showcasing the new Kit Jennifer! Love your pop up card designs! Thanks for the inspiration!

  24. You are incredible with the ideas & tips & fabulous cards you make Jennifer! I’m sure you’ve heard that a few times…
I love that tip of mounting the fish onto a strip of acetate between the panels to allow it to float. Thanks for that.
There isn’t one card you’ve made that I’m not mad about! This kit is right up my alley as I am such an “ocean” girl.
I live close to it, I swim in it & it’s where I find my peace if I’m feeling upset or sad. When I’m in, on, or beside the ocean & see it’s vastness it makes me reflect on the awesomeness of God. It would be a dream come true to win this.
