Hello! I am back with a video showing how to create metallic effects with stencils. I have a few different techniques and cards to share. I am also participating in a very special blog hop!

So much of cardmaking is focused on stamping and die cutting… and I think we often overlook stencils. But stencils are inexpensive and can be used in many ways to create fun backgrounds. Today I show how you can use stencils to create faux metal looks.

The first technique I show in the video is to use a stencil to make an impress (aka dry embossed image) on metallic cardstock. I used the Altenew Skylight Stencil (SSS | ALT) along with a Spellbinders Embossing Mat and my Sizzix Big Shot Express to create a textured background on matte silver cardstock. This makes such a gorgeous faux metal background!

At the center, I added a snowflake I created with the Altenew Layered Snowflakes Dies (SSS | ALT), Simon Says Stamp Glitter Cardstock, and an Altenew Starry Night Stamp Set (SSS | ALT) sentiment.

You can also create a faux metal background by heat embossing over a stencil. Here I applied VersaMark Ink with an Ink Blending Tool over an Altenew Sunburst Stencil (SSS |ALT) onto Altenew Gold Foil Cardstock. You can see the two-tone gold look you get…

I added a flower I created with the Altenew Handpicked Bouquet Stamp Set (SSS | ALT) and a sentiment from the Altenew Leaf Canopy Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

You can also created dimensional metallic texture with stencils. For this card, I applied Ranger Texture Paste over an Altenew Flowing Heart Stencil (SSS | ALT) onto Neenah Metallic Cardstock . I then added WOW Midas Touch Embossing Powder and heat set it. I love all that texture…

I also added a stacked Altenew Simply Hello Die (SSS | ALT) and a sentiment strip created with the Altenew Dearest Friend Stamp Set (SSS |ALT).

My last card uses several faux metal techniques. For the background, I applied Ranger Texture Paste over an Altenew Feeling Dotty Stencil (SSS | ALT) onto white cardstock. I then added Altenew Golden Peach Embossing Powder (SSS | ALT) and heat set it. To give it even more shine… I added Cosmic Shimmer Gilding Polish.

I covered lots of Altenew Layered Floral Element Die Cuts (SSS | ALT) with Gold, Silver, and Golden Peach embossing powder. I arranged them on a white piece along with an Altenew Wildflower Garden (SSS | ALT). Finally, I added an Altenew Fine Frames Cover Die Cut (SSS | ALT) covered with silver embossing.

  1. WOW, WOW, WOW, and WOW!! Thank you for sharing these cards and for making the video, it makes it so much easier to follow along to re-create your techniques. I have a new appreciation for stencils now lol, I can’t wait to try them all. ([email protected])

  2. I loved watching the video. The stamping and embossing the line in gold over the flower for the second card was beautiful. Why didn’t I think of that? So simple to do and so beautiful. Thanks.

  3. Jennifer you always outdo yourself. Your cards are beautiful! You are my #1 guru to turn to for inspiration. Off to make a Christmas list!

  4. Hi Jennifer. Amazing video. I loved all of your stencil techniques! I never thought of using embossing powders over textured paste. I am so excited to try these out. Thanks so much for sharing and I hope that all is well with u and your fam 💕❤️

  5. Wow Jennifer, I’m going to try and do some of my Christmas and New Years cards with that technique and I’ve been addicted to your numerous partial die cutting cards and tutorials and I love it and it makes me use my dies in much more ways that the regular ones. I own all the supplies but not the dies you used, so I’ll use my own and try this beautiful technique. You know, I had few different texture paste from my local art store, other well known brands but couldn’t achieve the delicate details you and others were having with the ranger texture paste and I bought it and WOW, it’s night and day. I’m going to keep using my other paste for mixed media, on canvas, etc. But for cards, I’m sold on ranger. And like many people tell you, when we’ve seen you use a product, we usually end up buying it. I’m the happy owner of 15 Nuvo drops of different colours and types, the embellishment mousse, I have few of your most used colours, same for gliding flakes and some of your most loved embossing powder, lol. I have been using stencils many new ways over the years after seeing you do it.

Thanks for everything. You’re so talented

  6. Beautiful as always! I really enjoy your creations. They are inspiring and I always learn something new. I love all the texture and dimension that these techniques have. Thanks so much!

  7. Wow, I am new to the art scene and hope one day I will achieve at least some of the talents you have. You are amazing and Merry Christmas!!

  8. Beautiful cards! I love the technique of using paste, then embossing powder. It gives such a stunning result!

  9. Stunning as always. Thank you for the great inspiration on how to use our plethora of craft supplies. Always love how you suggest using what we already have even though we are all obsessed with having new supplies at our disposal.

  10. Oh the heart card is so perfect, I am going to go to purchase the paste need to order the embossing powder. I absolutely love this card and the next one below with the beautiful metallic floral designs. Thank you so much for the inspiration!

  11. Beautiful cards, great inspiration as always. Using stencils are a great way to get out more of the craft supplies for less creatively.

  12. Awesome techniques and I have most of the supplies! Have to be put on hold tho for awhile…just had surgery on my right shoulder which, of course, is my dominant side! You make my day, Jennifer, every time I watch one of your inspiring videos! Thanks for being YOU!

  13. Each project is so full of shine, and the techniques you’ve used aren’t difficult–or so it seems. I plan on trying the techniques and putting shine to good use.

  14. This video is perfect timing for me, because I’ve been trying to use my stencils better/more extensively. I appreciate so much all the tips and tricks and product recommendations from this video; you are a superstar of crafting and general humanity. <3

  15. These cards are beautiful!! My favorite is the gold card where you just used Versamark ink with the embossing powder. It looks so elegant and provides the perfect background for the beautiful floral image you placed on top. Thanks for the great ideas you have shared as well as the terrific new Altenew products!

  16. Hi, Jennifer – I watched this over on YT. I love the metallic look. Thank you for always creating and sharing your ideas and research with us. I know you spend an enormous amount of time experimenting. I can’t find anyone in the USA that ships (at least reasonably to Hawai’i) the Wow Midas Touch. If you mention, it’s out of stock 😀

  17. I really like your cards and techniques. Thank you for details and time you put into sharing your techniques.
