Glimmer Foil Machine

Hello! Today I am sharing lots of techniques you can do with the new Spellbinders Glimmer Foil Machine. If you are a fan of adding shine to your cards (like I am!), this machine may be for you.

I have been getting a lot of questions about the new Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Machine (SSS | SB). Well, I have played with it quite a bit now and have really enjoyed using it. So… it is time to share! You use this machine along with a die cut machine to press hot foil into paper. The results are stunning. To learn how to use the machine (it is easy!), be sure to watch the video. For all of my examples, I used the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Machine (SSS | SB) along with Glimmer Hot Foil Rolls (SSS | SB).

I warn you – I am not great at capturing the foiling in photographs. But I promise the shine is perfect in real life!

My first card shows the magical-yet-clean-and-simple results you can get with the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Machine (SSS | SB). I used holographic foil from the Glimmer Hot Foil Metallic and Holographic Pack (SSS | SB) along with the Spellbinders Warm Winter Wishes Hot Foil Plate.

Here is another card example using the Spellbinders Warm Winter Wishes Hot Foil Plate, but on a darker teal. These foils look great on color cardstock!

I am crazy about the flowers and leaves in the Spellbinders Foil Flowers Hot Foil Plate Set (SSS | SB). I used the set to create a summer-ish card, but you could create a holiday card in reds and greens. I used both Rose Gold and Gold Foils.

I like how the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Machine (SSS | SB) adds the foil and presses into the paper for a bit of a letterpress look. Oh – and that sentiment is from the Ink Blot Sentiment Label Block Stamp Set.

You can also foil with wafer thins dies in the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Machine (SSS | SB). I am amazed at the detailed foiling I was able to get with the Spellbinders Palm Fronds Die (SSS | SB)…

I added a simple Birch Press Big Shine Sugar Script sentiment with gold cardstock. I wanted to keep the card simple so the focus would stay on the detailed foiling.

You can also use multiple colors of foil on one project. I placed three Spellbinders Little Plants Die Cuts (SSS | SB) dies onto my Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Machine (SSS | SB) and added three different colors of foil – pink, rose gold, and gold. After running it through the machine, I end up with colorful, detailed foiling.

I also added a Birch Press Big Hugs Sugar Script Die Cut and a few simple pearls.

Foiling can also be combined with stamping for beautiful results! For this card I foiled with the coordinating dies for the Pretty Pink Posh Decorative Ornament Stamp Set. I then silver heat embossed the images in the center and added coloring with markers.

In this close up photo, you can see the detailed silver foiling around the stamped images. Since I send a lot of “thank you” cards in the winter, I added a Birch Press Thanks Sugar Script Die. For final details, I used a Posca Extra Fine White Paint Pen, Uniball Silver Gel Pen, Silver Lining Nuvo Drops, and White Nuvo Drops.

Sometimes simple designs are the best when it comes to Christmas Cards! I am in love with the new Gina K Very Merry Christmas Stamp Set (SSS | GK) and it looks gorgeous with gold heat embossing! I created a gold foil ornament shape around it with a Hero Arts Ornament Infinity Die (SSS | HA).

Here is another example using coordinating dies for foiling. This time I used the star dies from the Trinity Stamps Joyeux Noel Stamp Set. The foiling is faint in the photos but eye-catching in real life. I also stamped images from the Trinity Stamps Joyeux Noel Stamp Set and added lots of Copic Marker coloring. The sentiment is again from the Ink Blot Sentiment Label Block Stamp Set. Oh… and if you look closely at the white background… I used a Spellbinder Elegant Border Hot Foil Plate (SSS | SB) to create a letterpress look. (Yes, you can use the Spellbinders Glimmer Hot Foil Machine (SSS | SB) and foil plates without heat and foil to get letterpress!)

It isn’t easy to see the letterpress in the photo but it adds great detail!

This next card was impossible to photograph – ha! I made this for my friend to give to her parents for their 50th wedding anniversary. This card combines several techniques I have already mentioned. First, I used the Spellbinder Elegant Border Hot Foil Plate (SSS | SB) with soft silver foil to foil on the background. Then I used the coordinating dies from the Concord & 9th Notable Numbers Stamp Set to add silver foil detailing around the silver heat embossed “50”. There is a lot of shine on this one!

I am waiting on the arrival of my machine and have been filling my carts at various online sellers with items I want to use with this machine. I wonder if you have used other foils other than the spellbinders foils? I would be very interested to know what works and what doesn’t and would love to have your feedback on that.

  8. Love your demo on just what to do with the new Spellbinders foil machine, I have a hard time with toner sheets, don’t want to buy another printer just for foiling so I buy the toner sheets.

  9. Love your technics and between you and spellbinders you make life enjoyable in making cards. Love the foiling can’t wait to be able to afford one someday. What a happy camper I will be.

  12. I was going to have my husband get me a good laminator for Christmas but I’m going to have get me this instead!! I can’t wait for Christmas to come now. Whoever says Christmas is for kids isn’t into paper crafting!!

  13. Loved the video!!! It is on my wish list. Question for you. Can you use other fouls in the machine like Gins K or Deco foil?

  14. Jennifer, I have been meaning to request this of you for a while now. When watching your videos on my tablet, the “playlist in the upper right-hand of your screen” never shows. So would you (could you) please either provide those links in the video description or on your blog? I often find myself searching through your YouTube videos in hopes that I find some of those videos. Sometimes you do include links to some past videos but not always.

    Thanks, Jennifer!
    Hugs,
    Beth

  15. For the die cutting machine–is there any reason you couldn’t use the cuttlebug with the glimmer foil system? Thanks!

  16. Hi Jennifer–
I’m late to this party but have finally decided on the G;immer Machine and your video was very helpful in making my decision, I’ be very interested in ore using the Glimmer Machine. Thank you so much for a very easy to understand and helpful video!

  17. thank you so much for the videos. it’s so great to learn new things and I especially enjoy using items I already have on hand. I do have a couple of questions for you, can you use any of the heating dies to cut in a regular die cutting machine? are any types of foil usable in the spellbinders system? i’m most interested in hot foil used in other systems.
thank you so much for the info.

  19. Can someone tell me why the glimmer hot foil is not compatible with laminator foil systems? That’s what I have read. Is it different than deco foil or Gina K foil? I’m new to foiling. Also, when using dies to foil with the spellbinder system, how does the die leave the foiled impression and not cut the paper when running it through the die cut machine? Thanks!

  20. I am in the process of buying a foiling machine, I think the spellbinder one, but one question….. in the compatibility section you did not mention the Vagabond die cutting machine. Is it compatible? I will not buy until I hear from you. Thanks.

  21. Jennifer…question. My friend is using a Glimmer but she is Amish and shes running it off of a generator. the extension coed shes using is very long. She gets good foiling when she does the first foiling but is 100% unsuccessful when trying the negative foiling. The machine seems very hot when we take the plate out. Ive asked Spellbinders and they have no clue. Can the foil get to hot? Thank you

  22. Jennifer, I always love your videos. They are fun, inspiring and very clear to understand and you leave no questions unanswered. Thank you.
I was wondering (I did try to Google it before asking but with no results) will the Empress Die Cut/Emboss machine work with the Glimmer Hot Foil machine? All I got is a Cuddle Bug and I know that one doesn’t work via Google search results. Been thinking of getting a new machine for while now anyways but didn’t want to invest all that money on an Empress if it doesn’t work with the Spellbinders Hot Foil system. Thank you in advance.
