Stencils are a great tool for cardmakers – they are inexpensive and can be used in many ways. Today I show how to add coloring with stencils on dark cardstocks. There are a few methods for you to try!

This first technique was SO much fun to do. It reminded me of coloring with templates when I was a kid! I started by stamping the Simon Says Stamp You Matter Stamp with Hero Arts Soft Sand Ink on kraft cardstock. (You could skip this step but I love the added layer.) I then positioned the new Simon Says Stamp Harvest Stencil on top and colored in all of the openings with colored pencils. I used my Polychromos Colored Pencils but you can use whatever pencils you have. I put the color on thick so it would be vibrant.

I added a large “thank you” white heat embossed sentiment from the Simon Says Stamp Thank You Flowers Stamp Set. (This stamp set is part of the new Simon Says Stamp Thank You Card Kit. I do recommend checking out this kit – it has many very useful tools included.) I also added a few tiny white heart die cuts.

My next card is very similar, but shows the results on an even darker cardstock. The color “glows” more in real life – I wish it showed in the video! I used the Simon Says Stamp Mod Stripe Stencil – such a unique stencil!

This sentiment has to be one of my new all-time favorites. It is from the Simon Says Stamp Spiritual Sentiments Stamp Set. Love! The message is silver heat embossed.

If you want even more intense color, I recommend first applying a layer of white pigment ink over the stencil before adding the colored pencil. Here, I started with black cardstock and added Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink over the Simon Says Stamp Mod Stripe Stencil. After heat setting it, I layered on color with my Polychromos Colored Pencils. You can see how the colors are more intense.

I added greetings using the Simon Says Stamp Great Things Stamp Set and Sentiment Labels Dies. I also added a fun message to the envelope using the Simon Says Stamp Thank You Flowers Stamp Set.

I enjoy taking the time to color in the patterns of the stencils. However, if you want to add color quickly, you can do so with Distress Oxide Inks (or pigment inks). I started by applying Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink over the Simon Says Stamp Harvest Stencil on navy cardstock. I then added colored Oxide Inks.

The “kind” die cuts are from the Simon Says Stamp Kind Script Die. This is also included in the Simon Says Stamp Thank You Card Kit.

  4. Jennifer, I really appreciate your wonderful videos. Like the tips of the white to make the colors on dark cardstock stand out more. Loved the little hand wave from Lila.

  5. Love the coverage the Polychromos pencils give!! Love mine! Love your fab idea and can’t wait to try it!! The Tiny sentiments are a fav from this new release!

  6. I am trying this as soon as I log off the computer. I love how this looks on the card cardstock. Now I have to chose which of my stencils to use.

  7. Of course you made some beautiful cards & you used something I like to use but am not the best at using, stencils. I have some great stencils & I like to use them but sometimes they don’t come out the way yours do or other people’s. However, we have 3 Christmas trees in our living room that are seasonal trees. Right now they are decorated for summer & soon we will do fall. I used a long flower stencil on a fence decoration on one of the trees & I love how it came out. I did a stencil on a tee for my niece that came out so nice! Sometimes, though, I have problems with stencils. I am so going to watch your video & try to get my stencils to come out like yours. Your cards are amazing!

  8. Hi Jennifer,
I just recently started using alcohol inks. I like this a lot but I tried the ghost stamping but when I take away the archival ink with a dry cotton cloth it always smeres and the image stays rather coloured. Do you have any tips or solutions ? Thanks a lot in advance.
    Kind greetings,
    Veerle from Belgium

  9. What a great idea using white ink and then color on top of that. It’s kind of like priming the walls before you paint. Which is what I did over the Labor Day weekend. 🙂

  10. Jennifer, such a great idea. This looks so awesome and seems pretty easy. Thanks so much for the inspiration.

  11. I just love the Harvest Stencil ! The technique of coloring on top of white ink is great. I have to give that a try soon. Thank you for the inspiration!

  12. I love using dark card stock and you have opened up more opportunities for me to use it in my cards. Love your website.

  13. So much great information and inspiration. I particularly like the one on black card stock. I agree that coloring through stencils is more than usually calming and satisfying. There’s something about it… Love the geometric stencil you used as a background here and the many tips you shared.

  14. This looks like a really fun technique to use on dark cardstock Jennifer. I love to color so this is right up my alley. Thanks for sharing this with us.

  15. Love your use of stencils. I’ll have to look to see if I have any that would work for this technique. By the way, love seeing Lila’s little hands waving hello.

  16. I am so grateful for all the techniques you teach. You are such an inspiration. I’ve had the colored pencils sitting on the shelf staring at me for months. It’s time to take them down and give this a try.

  17. I love to color and this is another fun way to do it and create a card at the same time! Received the purple tape from my hubby and I have to tell you, it works so well. No more tearing my paper when pulling off dies or stencils! Thank you.

  18. Once again, you have wowed all of us with such masterful techniques!! Love what can be done with stencils, and now colored pencils. Thank you, for all of the taping tips, too!

  19. Sorry for delay in watching this, life just got busy. Man this takes me back to childhood years, I loved doing this sort of colouring , like you said about Spiragraph etc ( I still actually have mine) Brilliant to see all these cards you’ve made, thank you for reminding me to use them like this. Hello to the waving hand !
