Stencils are a great tool for cardmakers – they are inexpensive and can be used in many ways. Today I show how to add coloring with stencils on dark cardstocks. There are a few methods for you to try!

This first technique was SO much fun to do. It reminded me of coloring with templates when I was a kid! I started by stamping the Simon Says Stamp You Matter Stamp with Hero Arts Soft Sand Ink on kraft cardstock. (You could skip this step but I love the added layer.) I then positioned the new Simon Says Stamp Harvest Stencil on top and colored in all of the openings with colored pencils. I used my Polychromos Colored Pencils but you can use whatever pencils you have. I put the color on thick so it would be vibrant.

I added a large “thank you” white heat embossed sentiment from the Simon Says Stamp Thank You Flowers Stamp Set. (This stamp set is part of the new Simon Says Stamp Thank You Card Kit. I do recommend checking out this kit – it has many very useful tools included.) I also added a few tiny white heart die cuts.

My next card is very similar, but shows the results on an even darker cardstock. The color “glows” more in real life – I wish it showed in the video! I used the Simon Says Stamp Mod Stripe Stencil – such a unique stencil!

This sentiment has to be one of my new all-time favorites. It is from the Simon Says Stamp Spiritual Sentiments Stamp Set. Love! The message is silver heat embossed.

If you want even more intense color, I recommend first applying a layer of white pigment ink over the stencil before adding the colored pencil. Here, I started with black cardstock and added Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink over the Simon Says Stamp Mod Stripe Stencil. After heat setting it, I layered on color with my Polychromos Colored Pencils. You can see how the colors are more intense.

I added greetings using the Simon Says Stamp Great Things Stamp Set and Sentiment Labels Dies. I also added a fun message to the envelope using the Simon Says Stamp Thank You Flowers Stamp Set.

I enjoy taking the time to color in the patterns of the stencils. However, if you want to add color quickly, you can do so with Distress Oxide Inks (or pigment inks). I started by applying Hero Arts Unicorn White Ink over the Simon Says Stamp Harvest Stencil on navy cardstock. I then added colored Oxide Inks.

The “kind” die cuts are from the Simon Says Stamp Kind Script Die. This is also included in the Simon Says Stamp Thank You Card Kit.

  3. Great ideas Jennifer, I need to go check out my stencil stash and see what I can do. The coloring process does look fun and relaxing, a great job for football season…sometimes those games drag on, lol!

  4. I would not have thought to try coloring on the dark card stock, but it does give you a whole new look. I recently bought colored pencils and this would be a great way to break them in. I also have wonderful memories of coloring as a child with my mom.

  5. Great ideas with stencils, never thought of using my pencils for my stencils. Also thank you so much for showing the white Hero Arts ink, I am looking a while now for a good white ink that wil stay white when using on dark cardstock. Gorgeous cards Jennifer and waving back to Lila, I can see on her hand that she is growing fast.

  6. These are fabulous cards ! Thanks for sharing! I always learn something from your videos and enjoy them more than a quick little tutorial. Your voice is clear and soothing, so perfect for these videos!

  7. My favorite is the mod stencil one. I did watch the video but do also very much appreciate the instructions written out in the blog post. Sometimes I don’t have time to watch a video or am in a location where I do not have headphones available so reading is the best option. Your cards turned out great as normal.

  8. Somehow( well we know how Lol!) I acquired a lot of dark card stock and I wondered how I would ever use it all. Thanks for some great suggestions! I love this idea and have some pretty cool stencils already. Thanks to SSS I know where there are more! 🙂

I’M LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO CHANGE MY EMAIL ADDRESS. I MIGHT HAVE ALREADY CHANGED IT BUT I’VE BEEN HAVING PANIC ATTACKS LATELY AND CAN’T BE SURE OF ANYTHING. I UPGRADED SERVICE SINCE WE WERE GETTING 1.3 mbs INSTEAD OF THE 200 mbs I COULD GET . TO MOST PEOPLE THESE ATTACKS ARE JUST EVERYDAY ANNOYANCES. FOR ME THEY ARE CRIPPLING. MY NEW EMAIL ADDRESS IS [email protected] . WILL YOU HELP ME?
PART OF MY PROBLEM IS GRIEF. JOHN PORTER WOULD HAVE BEEN 3 IN AUGUST AND I FEEL LIKE GOD IS PUNISHING ME EVEN THOUGH I TRY TO BE EXTRA GOOD TO EVERYONE.
