Heat Emboss Masking + GIVEAWAY

Hi! Masking is great for creating one-layer cards with the look of lots of layering. However, cutting masks can be time-consuming. So today I am showing how you can actually use heat embossing for masking!

I share several examples of heat embossed masking today. These are pretty complicated/involved cards, but you can use the technique for just about any card!

My first three cards feature the Altenew Bountiful Branches Stamp Set (SSS | ALT). I stamped the many layers with Altenew Inks (SSS | ALT) on watercolor paper. I then stamped directly on top of these images with the most solid layer stamp using Versamark Ink and clear heat embossed. This “traps” the ink under the embossing. The masking will resist the watercolor I add on top… therefore acting as a mask.

You can see the gorgeous embossing on the branches… that resists the watercolor on top. I used Altenew Watercolor 36 Pan Set (SSS |ALT) and a sentiment from the Altenew Build a Flower Anemone Coronaria Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

I am blown away with how realistic those branches look!

I did the same techniques for my next card, but with red berries and sentiments from the Altenew For All Seasons Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

Because the stamping is trapped under the embossing, I can watercolor over it without fear of the stamping bleeding.

I think this orange berry example is my favorite. The sentiment is from the Altenew Halftone Circles Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

Although I did a soft wash of watercolor over the embossing, I could have done a darker color, and the embossing would still resist it.

My next two cards feature the packed-full-of-many-great-images Altenew Holiday Bow Stamp Set (SSS | ALT). For this example, I started by stamping and heat embossing the poinsettia. I then stamped many branches and such over it – each time clear embossing. The embossing resists the additional layers. It looks like I used traditional masking, but I saved a lot of time!

Once I stamped and heat embossed all the layers, I stamped the Altenew Pattern Play Diamond Stamp Set (SSS | ALT) over the entire card. The sentiment is from the Altenew Blessings Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

My second card featuring the Altenew Holiday Bow Stamp Set (SSS | ALT) focuses on the bow image. I also stamped a border from the Altenew Starry Night Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

The sentiment is again from the lovely Altenew Blessings Stamp Set (SSS | ALT).

My last three cards are my favorite. I want to create more like this! I started by stamping and coloring images from the Altenew Build a Flower Anemone Coronaria Stamp Set (SSS | ALT). I then colored them in Versamarker Pen and clear heat embossed.

For my yellow card, I stamped over the embossed images with the Altenew Pinstripe Stamp Set (SSS | ALT). The embossing resists the stamped ink. Swoon!

You can also do ink blending over the heat embossing. This is great for creating a soft halo effect.

Finally, my last card shows how you can stencil over heat embossing. I have been using this Altenew Feeling Dotty Stencil (SSS |ALT) a lot lately!

  1. I love the versatility of the Bountiful Branches. It is so much more cost effective when a stamp can be used in many ways. I especially love the blue berry card that you made. Excellent example of versatility. Thank you! Love that Bountiful Branches set.

  2. Lovely examples and a great technique – as always!

  3. I have not tried watercoloring, but you make it look so easy I just might have to give it a try! Absolutely gorgeous cards once again! You are so talented and so inspiring to get creative
