Z-Fold Card Design Options

Hi! I think it is fun to give cards with fun folds… something different than a store-bought card. Today I share a few different z-fold card designs. Super easy!

My first z-fold design is the easiest to do and is the most common. You can create a card like this using any stamps or dies! I started by covering a 4 1/4″ x 5 1/2″ side-folding notecard with soft stripes… using the Hero Arts Soft Vanilla Ink (SSS | HA) and the new Concord & 9th Stripes and Saying (SSS | C9). I then scored at 2 1/8″ down the center of the card and folded it back to create a z-fold. I added a Concord & 9th Laurel Frame (SSS | C9) flower so it was just attached to the front of the card. (I list the ink colors in the thumbnails below.)

When you open the card, you can see a spot for the personal message.

The sentiment is from the Concord & 9th Laurel Frame Dies (SSS | C9). I also added Pretty Pink Posh Buttercream Jewels.

Another design option is to use partial die cutting. I really like this look! I started with a 4 1/4″x 5 1/2″ side-folding notecard and did partial die cutting with the Concord & 9th Triple Step Thank You Die (SSS | C9). I then scored down the center of the card to create the z-fold. (Watch the video to see this in action.)

Next I stamped the “thank you” using the Concord & 9th Triple Step Thank You Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and the Concord & 9th Sunshine Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) on the backgrounds.

By the way, during the month of July, proceeds from the Concord & 9th Triple Step Thank You go to The Sharing Place: Grief Support for Children. I love when crafters support a good cause – thank you Concord & 9th!

You can also use either of the first two techniques to make a bottom-folding card. For the background on this one, I used the new Concord & 9th Lovely Blossoms Turnabout Stamp Set (SSS | C9) and lots of colors of Gina K Ink! (See them listed below.) I then folded the front half of the card down to create a z-fold.

I added a framed label from the Concord & 9th Lovely Blossoms Dies (SSS | C9) to the front fold and the inside of the card, lining them up. The sentiment is from the same die set… and I used a bit of Concord & 9th Neutrals Glitter Paper (SSS | C9).

This design works with just about any products!

I also have a few bonus cards featuring the new Concord & 9th Dip Dyed Cards & Envelopes (SSS | C9). These cards and matching envelopes are great for super quick cards. So pretty! I used mine with the Concord & 9th Heartfelt Smile Stamp Set (which is free for a limited time with a $60+ purchase) and WOW Silver Glitter Embossing Powder.

  5. I love z-folds and have been making them for a number of years. It was probably my first “fancy” fold. But, of course, you always bring it up a notch, and I get so many ideas and lots of inspiration from your beautiful creations. Thank you. And I’m loving the little dots you’ve added in the last couple of videos. Way cool!

  6. Brilliant bright ideas for the folding cards, all three looked very different & I liked them all, my favourite was the third downward folding card, that’s a must try for me. Those new cards are gorgeous with the dip dye effect & in so many colours very stunning I can see why you like them. Thanks for an amazing video again , please keep them coming x

  7. Oh my gosh, I love each and every card, especially the ones that use my favorite color in the whole wide world, yellow. I wonder though if I could make any of these cards without a die cutter? I suppose I could make the folds but not the rest. They are so different from the cards you see in the stores. I have tons of scrap paper from where my mom works so I could practice the folds until I get them right enough to make a card. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do. Thanks for the great inspiration! I’m going to work on one and when I get it just right, I’ll let you know.

  8. Brilliant cards and techniques. And those bonus cards are fabulous, what great card bases that make it so easy to make a stunning card. Thanks for sharing these all with us.

  9. I, too, love cards with unique folds, and you’ve given me so many wonderful ideas. I love the partial die cut card. Your projects always inspire me.
