Simple Paint Dragging + GIVEAWAY
Hello! Today I am sharing a simple-yet-oh-so-fun technique that you can do with paint to create gorgeous backgrounds. My kids even enjoyed it and we were able to make a bunch of cards in little time!

I have no idea what this technique is really called, but I refer to it as “paint dragging.” I was inspired by Josie Lewis… I LOVE all the gorgeous art she creates! I kept my paint dragging very simple, but you could get creative and create unique backgrounds.
Be sure to watch the video to see how these backgrounds were created. It is simple! Simply put drops of acrylic paint (I used THESE) on cardstock and then drag something with a straight edge through it. (I used a Creative Corner but you could use a credit card.) It results in beautiful backgrounds. After making lots and lots of backgrounds this way, I created these many cards…
My first card features one of my painted backgrounds in a simple shaker card. I used a rectangle die to do a partial die cutting trick (watch the video!) to create a narrow window on a piece of white cardstock. I then added a painted background with black heat embossed images from the Hero Arts July My Monthly Hero Kit. (More on that below.) The sentiment is from the Hero Arts Birthday Messages Stamp Set (HA | SSS).
I only used a little bit of Tonic Golden Years Confetti in the shaker window and I *did not* use anything to remove the static. I like when the confetti sticks to the acetate so they look like they are floating!
Here is another shaker card example. This time I used a circle die to create the window… and again heat embossed images from the Hero Arts July My Monthly Hero Kit. The starburst-like background die is included in the kit.
You can stamp with many inks on these painted backgrounds, but I really prefer the crisp results from heat embossing.
Here is another card using black heat embossing on a painted background. I prefer doing black heat embossing by stamping with VersaFine Onyx Black Ink and clear heat embossing. Notice that the background die looks a bit different on this card. I show how to make this change in the video with a bit of simple partial die cutting.
I also really like the new Hero Arts Ornate Carousel Stamp Set (SSS | HA). Also, the painting on this one is pretty in real life, especially with white heat embossed images! The background features the die from the Hero Arts July My Monthly Hero Kit cut from Carta Bella White Shimmer Cardstock.
All of these images on this next card are from the Hero Arts July My Monthly Hero Kit… and the background uses the leftover pieces from the kit’s die.
And here are a few more featuring the Hero Arts Ornate Carousel Stamp Set (SSS | HA). I added shimmer to these with Tsukineko Shimmer Spritz (subtle) or a Tonic Aqua Shimmer Pen (more intense).
I like that this card can be given to a kid or adult!

I did thin layers of paint on these pieces, buy you could definitely do thicker layers if you want for a more solid look.
Creating these “sun” pieces was very easy. I die cut a large circle from a Hero Arts July My Monthly Hero Kit‘s background die cut. Bam! I have a sun.
The best part of today’s video? I have lots of backgrounds leftover for quick future cards!
